Extensive, Non-Healing Scalp Ulcer Associated with Trauma-Induced Chronic Osteomyelitis
Pedro Valerón-Almazán,Anselmo Javier Gómez-Duaso,Pino Rivero,Jaime Vilar,Luis Dehesa,Néstor Santana,Gregorio Carretero 대한피부과학회 2011 Annals of Dermatology Vol.23 No.-
A 77-year-old woman presented with a trauma to the scalp caused from the blade of a windmill. The condition was persistent from the past 50 years. At the initial examination,a deep, foul-smelling and well-circumscribed ulcer was apparent on the head region, involving the majority of the cranium. Skin biopsy specimens of the lesion were nonspecific. The bone biopsy showed extensive necrotic areas of bone and soft tissues, with lymphocytic exudate foci. A computed tomography scan of the head revealed bone destruction principally involving both the parietal bones, and parts of the frontal and occipital bones. Streptococcus parasanguis was isolated from the skin culture, and Proteus mirabilis and Peptostreptococcus sp. were identified in the cultures from the bone. A long-term treatment with amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (1 g/12 h) and levofloxacin (500 mg/day) was prescribed, but even after 6 months, the lesion remained unchanged. The frequency of occurrence of scalp ulcers in dermatological patients is less, principally because of the rich blood supply to this area. We have not found any similar case report of a scalp ulcer secondary to chronic osteomyelitis discovered more than 50 years after the causal trauma. We want to highlight the importance of complete cutaneous evaluation including skin and bone biopsies, when scalp osteomyelitis is suspected. (Ann Dermatol 23(S3) S364∼S367, 2011)
Etiopathogenic role of ERK5 signaling in sarcoma: prognostic and therapeutic implications

Sarcomas constitute a heterogeneous group of rare and difficult-to-treat tumors that can affect people of all ages, representing one of the most common forms of cancer in childhood and adolescence. Little is known about the molecular entities involved in sarcomagenesis. Therefore, the identification of processes that lead to the development of the disease may uncover novel therapeutic opportunities. Here, we show that the MEK5/ERK5 signaling pathway plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of sarcomas. By developing a mouse model engineered to express a constitutively active form of MEK5, we demonstrate that the exclusive activation of the MEK5/ERK5 pathway can promote sarcomagenesis. Histopathological analyses identified these tumors as undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcomas. Bioinformatic studies revealed that sarcomas are the tumors in which ERK5 is most frequently amplified and overexpressed. Moreover, analysis of the impact of ERK5 protein expression on overall survival in patients diagnosed with different sarcoma types in our local hospital showed a 5-fold decrease in median survival in patients with elevated ERK5 expression compared with those with low expression. Pharmacological and genetic studies revealed that targeting the MEK5/ERK5 pathway drastically affects the proliferation of human sarcoma cells and tumor growth. Interestingly, sarcoma cells with knockout of ERK5 or MEK5 were unable to form tumors when engrafted into mice. Taken together, our results reveal a role of the MEK5/ERK5 pathway in sarcomagenesis and open a new scenario to be considered in the treatment of patients with sarcoma in which the ERK5 pathway is pathophysiologically involved.

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) is one of the most extensively used polymer in 3D printingmanufacturing due to its competitive thermal and mechanical properties. Recently, a special attentionhas been devoted to novel ABS composites featuring extra functionalities e.g. in the area of VOC removal. Herein, we report on a facile protocol for the functionalization of 3D printed ABSfilters with a MOF(Metal-Organic Framework) material (ZIF-8) targeting the conception of attractive gasfilters. Theproposed synthesis strategy consists in low temperature ALD (Atomic Layer Deposition) of ZnO on theABS grid followed by the hydrothermal conversion of ZnO to ZIF-8, both steps being conducted at 60 C. Insuch way, the method enables an effective growth of ZIF-8 without altering the stability of the polymericABS support. The as-fabricated ABS/ZIF-8filters offer a promising adsorption behaviour for dimethylmethylphosphonate ( 20.4 mg of DMMP per gram of ZIF-8), thus proving their potential for toxic gascapture applications.

Ferulic acid (FA) is a phytochemical with various bioactive properties. It has recently been proposed that due to its phytogenic action it can be used as an alternative growth promoter additive to synthetic compounds. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the growth performance, carcass traits, fiber characterization and skeletal muscle gene expression on hair-lambs supplemented with two doses of FA. Thirty-two male lambs (n = 8 per treatment) were individually housed during a 32 d feeding trial to evaluate the effect of FA (300 and 600 mg d-1) or zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH; 6 mg d-1) on growth performance, and then slaughtered to evaluate the effects on carcass traits, and muscle fibers morphometry from Longissimus thoracis (LT) and mRNA abundance of β2-adrenergic receptor (β2-AR), MHC-I, MHC-IIX and IGF-I genes. FA increased final weight and average daily gain with respect to non-supplemented animals (p < 0.05). The ZH supplementation increased LT muscle area, with respect to FA doses and control (p < 0.05). Cross-sectional area (CSA) of oxidative fibers was larger with FA doses and ZH (p < 0.05). Feeding ZH increased mRNA abundance for β2-AR compared to FA and control (p < 0.05), and expression of MHC-I was affected by FA doses and ZH (p < 0.05). Overall, FA supplementation of male hair lambs enhanced productive variables due to skeletal muscle hypertrophy caused by MHC-I up-regulation. Results suggest that FA has the potential like a growth promoter in lambs.
The Chapters of “Book of Dada Gorgud” Preserved in The Memories
Almaz Hasangizi Institute for Eurasian Turkic Studies Dongduk Wome 2018 The Journal of Eurasian Turkic Stidies Vol.1 No.-
Folklor specialists have different opinions about the creation and performance history of one of the most valuable heritages of Turkic culture, the mother book of Oghuzs – “Dada Gorgud”, its number of chapters, composition and etc. It is known that, in contrast with other eposes, it has been a few centuries that “Dada Gorgud” is no longer vocally performed. But some of the chapters of the epos, the manuscript of which has come until today, have been recited and preserved differently among the nations both in Turkey and Azerbaijan. We have to note that only five chapters of the twelve existing chapters of “Book of Dada Gorgud” have long lived in the memories and performed, namely the chapters “Bughaj, son of Dirsa khan”, “How Gazan khan’s house was pillaged”, “Bamsi Beyrak, son of Gambura”, “Dali Domrul, son of Dukha Goja” and “How Basat killed Goggle-Eye”. Some expressions related to epos can be seen in the folk songs, as well as there are some tale versions of the epos chapters. Moreover, some paremic expressions have taken their origin from “Dada Gorgud”. We can clearly see motives of “Dada Gorgud” in both heroic and love eposes created during later periods. The article analyzes the traces of different versions of the chapters of the “Book of Dada Gorgud” which has been preserved until nowadays in folk literature. Key words: “Dada Gorgud”, epos, vocal performance, tale, folk, song
Effects of Annealing on Irradiated SiC Piezoresistive Pressure Sensor
Ekrem Almaz,Thomas E. Blue 한국물리학회 2012 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.61 No.7
The effects of temperature on the annealing of a silicon carbide (SiC) piezoresistive pressure sensor exposed to high-fluence neutron irradiation were investigated. The, SiC piezoresistive sensor was irradiated with gamma rays with the 60Co gamma-ray irradiator, and fast neutrons at Beam Port 1 (BP1) and at the Auxiliary Irradiation Facility (AIF) of Ohio State University’s Nuclear Reactor Laboratory (OSUNRL). Annealing temperatures up to 400 ℃ were applied to the pressure sensor. The pressure-output voltage results showed recovery after the SiC piezoresistive pressure sensor had been annealed. The bridge resistances of the SiC pressure sensor stayed at the same level for annealing temperatures up to 300 ℃. After annealing at 400 ℃, the resistance values of the sensor changed dramatically.
