E. González-Reimers,Javier López-Prieto,Ricardo Pelazas-González,M.Remedios Alemán-Valls,María José de la Vega-Prieto,Carlos Jorge-Ripper,M. Carmen Durán-Castellón,F Santolaria-Fernández 대한골대사학회 2014 대한골대사학회지 Vol.21 No.1
Background: Sclerostin inhibits osteoblast functions, differentiations, and survival rates. As an endogenous inhibitor of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, the sclerostin should be re-lated to decreased bone masses, although several studies indicate opposite results. Inaddition, it may be related to insulin resistances and carbohydrate metabolisms, a rela-tion shared with other markers of bone metabolisms, such as osteocalcin. Hepatitis C vi-rus (HCV) infected patients may present osteoporosis, and frequently show liver steato-sis, which is a consequence of insulin resistance. The behaviour of sclerostin in these pa-tients is yet unknown. The aim of this work is to analyse the relationships between se-rum sclerostin and osteocalcin levels and bone mineral density (BMD), liver functions, the intensity of liver steatosis and biochemical markers of bone homeostasis and insulinresistance in HCV-infected patients. Methods: Forty HCV patients with 20 years of ageand gender-matching controls were included in this study and underwent bone densi-tometry. Serum sclerostin, osteocalcin, collagen telopeptide, adiponectin, leptin, insulin, resistin, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interleukin (IL)-6 were determined. Liver fatwas histomorphometrically assessed. Results: Sclerostin levels were slightly higher inpatients than in controls, and were directly related to BMD at different parts of the skele-ton, also to the serum telopeptide, and to the liver steatosis and TNF-α. On the contrary, osteocalcin showed a significant direct relationship with serum adiponectin, and an in-verse one with IL-6. Conclusions: Serum sclerostin levels were within the normal rangein HCV patients, and correlated directly with BMD and serum telopeptide. In addition, the relationships of sclerostin and osteocalcin with variables associated with insulin re-sistance suggested the role of bones for intermediary metabolisms.

Medicinal plants play an important role in the management of various diseases, so their use has become widespread. However, in some cases the population uses plant species regardless of the toxicity they may possess. The objective of this study was to evaluate the acute toxicity of aqueous extract from the leaves of Ambrosia arborescens Mill. on the biochemical and histopathological parameters of albino Holtzman rats. To do this, the leaves of A. arborescens were collected in the province of Julcan, La Libertad Region—Peru. OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) guideline 423 was conducted, forming experimental groups of 10 animals each one (5 males and 5 females): Group I (Control), which received 2 mL physiological saline solution (SSF 0.9%), Groups II and III (A. arborescens-300 and A. arborescens-2000), which were given the aqueous extract leaves of A. arborescens in a single dose of 300 and 2000 mg/kg/day, respectively. On the 14th day of exposure, biochemical (creatinine, ALT and AST) and histopathological parameters were measured. The results show that the aqueous extract of A. arborescens at the dose of 2000 mg/kg produces an increase in biochemical parameters which is related to histopathological analysis of liver and renal tissue with mild congestion. The study concludes that the aqueous extract leaves of A. arborescens has a LD50 greater than 2000 mg/kg and produces mild congestion in kidneys and liver, but showed no significant toxicological changes in the other albino Holtzman rats organs.

Avocado production in Mexico represents an income of more than $3.2 billion dollars per year in foreign ex change. Unfortunately, several factors can limit the export of this fruit. One of such limiting factor is the avocado seed moth, Stenoma catenifer; however, its population dynamics is barely known. Therefore, is relevant to study the environmental factors affecting population changes, aimed to improve its management. In this study, we monitored the population fluctuations of S. catenifer males and explored its relationship with temperature and relative humidity by using pheromone-baited traps in Hass avocado orchards in the state of Colima, Mexico. From June 2018 to June 2019, a total of 6,836 males of the avocado seed moth were collected, with two population peaks. The first in June-August, during the fruiting stage, and the second in December-January, coinciding with the end of fruiting and flowering stages. Fruit infestation ranged from 0.0 to 65.0% in the or chards examined. Cluster analysis and principal coordinate analysis indicated that sampling time and relative humidity group together but differ from temperature. The effect of relative humidity and temperature on catches was analyzed by relating non-parametric bivariate distributions. The highest male catches were recorded at temperatures greater than 15.8 ◦ C and relative humidity greater than 60% while low relative humidity did not favor moth catches. These results may be useful to predict bioecological conditions for the occurrence of pop ulations of this pest.

Biofertilization is a technique that uses plant and animal wastes to add organic matter and nutrients to the soil. It can also use microorganisms that can metabolize these by-products to facilitate their absorption by the plant roots. In this study, we tested the eff ects of rhizospheric bacteria inoculation (T 1 ), a combination of rhizospheric bacteria with liquid fertilizer (T 2 ) and uncombined liquid fertilizer (T 3 ), on the growth, nutritional content, root tissue, and root cells of lettuce plants. The results showed signifi cant positive diff erences in all treatments compared to control plants, in terms of morphologi cal, nutritional, and productivity parameters. The combination of rhizospheric bacteria with liquid SEFEL fertilizer (T 2 ) yielded the best results, showing increased fresh and dry weight, and diameter. There were no diff erences between treat ments for nutritional content, but each treatment outperformed the control by more than 700% for all macronutrients. The best result was phosphorus content for T 1 , with 1272.22% more than control. Regarding root structure and ultrastructure, there was no variation in tissue organization compared to control plants, but increases in root hairs (T 1 ), development of transfer cells (T 2 ), and secondary growth (T 3 ) were observed. Additionally, colonization of roots by rhizospheric bacteria was confi rmed in all three treatments. In conclusion, this study suggests that inoculating with rhizospheric bacteria is a viable and environmentally friendly biofertilization for lettuce plants.

Lázaro-Carrasco de la Fuente Jesús,Cuerva González Marcos,González Rodríguez Silvia,Delgado Marín Juan Luis,Cuevas Castillo Carmen,Nieto Magro Concepción 대한폐경학회 2022 대한폐경학회지 Vol.28 No.2
Objectives: This study aims to assess the effect of ultralow dose 0.005% estriol vaginal gel in women with genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM).Methods: In this prospective and multicenter single-arm study, efficacy was assessed by the evaluation of the epithelial maturation value (MV), vaginal pH, symptoms and signs of vulvovaginal atrophy. Tolerability, acceptability, and the effect on intimate relationships were also evaluated. Results: We included 35 postmenopausal women with moderate-to-severe vaginal dryness. The most bothering symptom reported was vaginal dryness. The mean increase in the MV after 7 and 14 days of treatment were 22.1 (P < 0.001) and 39.9 (P < 0.001) points, with an increase in the superficial cells of 17.7 percentage points (pp) (95% confidence interval [CI], 7.9–27.4; P < 0.001) and 41.4 pp (95% CI, 28.2–54.6; P < 0.001) observed at the timepoints. Additionally, the pH decreased by 0.6 ± 0.7 (mean ± SD) at 7 days (P < 0.0001) and by 1.1 ± 0.8 at 14 days (P < 0.0001) from a baseline mean value of 6.3 ± 0.8. The severity of vaginal dryness (range, 0 [none] to 3 [severe]) was significantly reduced by a mean of 1.4 points (P < 0.0001) at 7 days and 2 points (P < 0.0001) at 14 days. Conclusions: Ultralow dose 0.005% estriol vaginal gel produced a rapid improvement of most relevant symptoms and signs of GSM. This clinically meaningful response was observed from the initial days of treatment, confirming a fast onset and a progressive action.

The postharvest application of high degree of polymerization agave fructans (HDPAF) was tested, evaluating anthracnose disease, defense-related enzyme activities, and quality attributes in avocado fruit. Application of a 20% HDPAF solution showed a reduction in anthracnose severity (60%) and incidence (34%) compared to the other concentrations evaluated and the water-treated control. Polyphenoloxidase activity increased 4.6 times more 24 h after treatment. In addition, peroxidase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase enzyme activity was 4.34 and 1.7 times higher than the control at 0.5 h after treatment. HDPAF retrieves the deceleration of both firmness loss and physiological weight loss compared to the control. Regarding quality parameters such as color, pH, total soluble solids, and titratable acidity, no significant differences were observed between treatments compared to the control; therefore, these parameters were not negatively affected by HDPAF treatments, but a positive effect on the induction of the defense system is shown.

Background: Cardio myoblast generation from conventional approaches is laborious and time-consuming. We present a bioelectronics on-a-chip for stimulating cells cardio myoblast proliferation during culture. Method: The bioelectronics chip fabrication methodology involves two different process. In the first step, an aluminum layer of 200 nm is deposited over a soda-lime glass substrate using physical vapor deposition and selectively removed using a Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser to create the electric tracks. To perform the experiments, we developed a biochip composed of a cell culture chamber fabricated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with a glass coverslip or a cell culture dish placed over the electric circuit tracks. By using such a glass cover slip or cell culture dish we avoid any toxic reactions caused by electrodes in the culture or may be degraded by electrochemical reactions with the cell medium, which is crucial to determine the effective cell-device coupling. Results: The chip was used to study the effect of electric field stimulation of Rat ventricular cardiomyoblasts cells (H9c2). Results shows a remarkable increase in the number of H9c2 cells for the stimulated samples, where after 72 h the cell density double the cell density of control samples. Conclusions: Cell proliferation of Rat ventricular cardiomyoblasts cells (H9c2) using the bioelectronics-on-a-chip was enhanced upon the electrical stimulation. The dependence on the geometrical characteristics of the electric circuit on the peak value and homogeneity of the electric field generated are analyzed and proper parameters to ensure a homogeneous electric field at the cell culture chamber are obtained. It can also be observed a high dependence of the electric field on the geometry of the electrostimulator circuit tracks and envisage the potential applications on electrophysiology studies, monitoring and modulate cellular behavior through the application of electric fields.
