This study investigated in what ways the functional thinking for fourth graders might be fostered through regular mathematics instruction. It focused on the ‘pattern and correspondence’ unit in the fourth grade mathematics textbooks. The main activities of the unit were reconstructed by the key instructional principles to foster functional thinking. This paper analyzed the characteristics of functional thinking of the students in a focused group. As a result, the students were able to recognize the relationship of two variables with non-continuous correspondence table and represented it in various ways. Such development was supported by effective interaction among the students. This paper closes with instructional implications to improve the functional thinking for elementary school students.

        근대(近代) 중국(中國)의 박람회(博覽會) 인식(認識)

김경혜 ( Kim Kyeong Hye ) 중국사학회 2018 中國史硏究 Vol.117 No.-

Since the Qing government lost the Opium War, it faced internal and external problems to build a modern state and escape from the invasion of Western powers. As Western countries recognized the exposition as a prerequisite for successful modernization, they competitively held a fair to show off their technological civilization or to show off their superiority as an imperial state running a colony. Japan's Meiji government also participated in most Western fairs and held their own exhibition because it recognized that the exhibition was a very important device for the construction of modern industrial countries and a tool for enlightenment of the people. In contrast, the Qing government rejected requests from all over the world to participate in the Expo, treating it as just a 'no-good thing'. Hasebong, who has continued to research modern East Asian fairs, described China as a 'participated' country, not the first 'participate' country in East Asia. China's participation in the fair was not based on the will of the government. China's participation in the exposition was not voluntary or proactive at the government. Why did the Qing government take a passive, or negative attitude toward the fair, without showing active interest in it, such as in the West and Japan? Exposition is a place where civilization interacts and communicates with each other around economic exchanges. A successful exhibition requires the development of a commodity economy, followed by political support and a social atmosphere. At that time, however, the situation in China was not so at all. As Western countries boasted of their advanced technical civilization, China was still in the pride of being the best in the world with its traditional handicrafts. Because this attitude lasted for a long time, the Chinese couldn't find what they could get from the fair. This research is a study on how China understood and accepted the Expo, a symbol of modernization in Western countries. This paper looked at the images of the exhibition left by modern Chinese, focusing on the diary of the diplomat, the record of attending the expo, and the travel journal left by individuals. And it looked at how their records affected the changing attitude of the government toward the fair.

근대 중국인의 박람회 인식 - 왕도(王韜)와 이규(李圭)의 경우-

김경혜 ( Kim Kyeong Hye ) 중국사학회 2017 中國史硏究 Vol.111 No.-

This research traces how the western exhibition was introduced and understood in late Qing dynasty. Since the frist exhibition in the history of human race in 1851, Western countries held an exhibition to show off results of their modernization, to demonstrate their power as a imperial countries. Westerners, as well as Chinese understood that the exhibition was essential for the development of national industry and modernization. In this paper, I want to research how Wangtao and Ligui introduced and perceived the exhibition through their memoirs as Chinese elite. Wangtao was the first Chinese visitor of London and Paris exhibition, and Ligui was the first Chinese government official's participation in Philadelphia exhibition. They pay close attention to western exhibition as an important part of western culture. At first, they thought the exhibition was a place where the special treasures was displayed. Gradually, they recognized that the exhibition is a place for the competition for goods from all over the world.

        근대중국(近代中國)의 서양교육제도소개(西洋敎育制度紹介)

김경혜 ( Kyeong Hye Kim ) 중국사학회 2011 中國史硏究 Vol.75 No.-

This research traces how the Western educational system, the model of Qing`s educational reformation, was introduced in late Qing and explores the path and content of the educational reformation in late Qing dynasty. The introduction of Western educational system approaches from two different directions. One of those comes from Western missionary and the other comes from Chinese elites who have explored the western culture. The Western missionaries propose China`s educational reformation as a part of their mission and introduce the Western educational system, which later triggers the China`s educational reformation. They endeavor to enlighten Chinese society and improve cultural standards through educational reformation. German missionary E. Faber propagates the idea of ``無地無學, 無 事非學, 無人不學``, meaning there is no place without school, process of learning and people getting no education in a country, and asserts that Germany has the perfect educational system. Timothy Richard advertises the educational system consists of elementary, middle and high school by introducing European, American and Japanese educational system. Moreover, he also presents that Country must support partial educational costs. American missionary, Young John Allen, states that China should model after America or Japan and embrace the Western educational system like Japan did. Moreover, he also states that women, future mothers who cultivate next generations of talents, also must be educated. Meanwhile, Chinese, who have experienced Western culture, pay close attention to western educational system as diplomatic delegations and as liable elites with serious concerns about problems in China. They present enforcement of compulsory education regardless of gender and class, nationwide school system connecting elementary, middle school and college, the emphasis on natural sciences and many more. The Western educational system introduced by these people plays an important role in establishing objective and direction of modern Chinese educational reformation.
