여성 참정권과 Bernard Shaw : Press Cuttings를 중심으로
鄭京淑 水原大學校 1993 論文集 Vol.11 No.-
George Bernard Shaw(1856-1950) had much to say about the "woman question" in his plays. He recognized that the "woman question" was an inseparable part of a larger social question and many critics have proposed that Shaw's depiction of women reveals his sympathetic understanding of the real woman of his time. But an implied criticism of feminism and an awareness of its limitation lie behind many of Shaw's portraits of women. This study is an attempt to seek Shaw's concrete attitude toward women and toward the "woman question", focusing on the causes of the vacillation and ambivalence in Shaw's view on women in his middle phase one act play Press cuttings. Press cuttings makes several topical references to the Suffragette struggle : but it also reveals that while Shaw offered well-intentioned support for the women's movement. he sometimes used it as a convenient target for mere comical sharpshooting. Press cuttings contains one of Shaw's most hilarious satirical exposures of the limitations of strident middle class feminism. In this play, we find that antipathy towards social currents made him an acute critic of the Suffragettes and of the movement of feminism. At the root of Show's analysis of the "woman question" lay his deep distrust of the dominant ideology in his society.
