Background: It is not clear whether ginseng affects cyclosporine A (CsA)-induced desirable immunosuppressive action. In this study, we evaluated the immunological influence of combined treatment of ginseng with CsA. Methods: Using CD4þ T cells from mouse spleens stimulated with the T cell receptor (TCR) or allogeneic antigen-presenting cells (APCs), we examined the differentiation of naïve T cells into T helper 1 (Th1), Th2, Th17, and regulatory T cells (Tregs), and their cytokine production during treatment by Korean Red Ginseng extract (KRGE) and/or CsA. The influence of KRGE on the allogeneic T cell response was evaluated by mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR). We also evaluated whether signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and STAT5 are implicated in this regulation. Results: Under TCR stimulation, KRGE treatment did not affect the population of CD4þinterferon gamma (IFNg)þ and CD4þinterleukin (IL)-4þ cells and their cytokine production compared with CsA alone. Under the Th17-polarizing condition, KRGE significantly reduced the number of CD4þIL-17þ cells and CD4þ/phosphorylated STAT3 (p-STAT3)þ cells, but increased the number of CD4þCD25þforkhead box P3 (Foxp3)þ cells and CD4þ/p-STAT5þ cells compared with CsA alone. In allogeneic APCs-stimulated CD4þ T cells, KRGE significantly decreased total allogeneic T cell proliferation. Consistent with the effects of TCR stimulation, KRGE reduced the number of CD4þIL-17þ cells and increased the number of CD4þCD25þFoxp3þ cells under the Th17-polarizing condition. Conclusion: KRGE has immunological benefits through the reciprocal regulation of Th17 and Treg cells during CsA-induced immunosuppression.

최근의 자갈질 지반에 대한 연구는 주로 상대밀도 혹은 자갈함유량에 바탕을 둔 연구로써 자갈질 지반의 액상화거동에 대하여 일부 연구자들은 상대밀도, 다른 연구자들은 자갈함유량에 상관성을 가지고 있음을 발표하였다. 그러나 자갈질 지반의 상대밀도는 자갈함유량에 따라 달라지게 되며 상대밀도만으로 자갈질 흙의 거동을 충분히 표현하기에는 어려운 점이 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 밀도와 구속압을 동시에 고려할 수 있는 상태정수를 도입하고 비배수 삼축압축시험을 통하여 자갈혼합율에 따른 정상상태선(Steady State Line, SSL)을 결정하고 상태정수에 따른 비배수 응력 거동을 고찰하였다. 연구 결과 정상상태선의 위치는 간극비에 의존하여 자갈 함유율이 증가할수록 상대적으로 아래쪽에 위치한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 같은 상대밀도라 할지라도 구속압에 따라 조밀하거나 혹은 느슨한 거동을 보였다. 특히 상대밀도가 80% 이상인 조밀한 시료일지라도 큰 구속압 아래에선 느슨한 거동을 하였다. 그러나 유사한 상태정수를 갖는 자갈질 흙은 비슷한 응력거동을 나타내었다. 이로서 흙의 거동은 상대밀도보다는 상태정수에 근거해야 함을 알 수 있었다. 또한 상태정수와 비배수전단강도는 좋은 상관 관계를 나타내었다. Recent researches on the behavior of gravelly soils have been focused mainly on the relative density or on the gravel content. And some researchers presented the liquefaction behavior based on the relative density whereas others based on the gravel content of gravelly soil. However the relative densities vary with gravel content and relative density is not enough to fully express the behavior of gravelly soils. Therefore in this research state parameter which considers void ratio and effective confining pressure is introduced and Steady State Line(SSL) of gravelly soils for various gravel content are determined by undrained triaxial tests in order to express the behavior of gravelly soils. From the research the position of SSL moved downward with gravel content. And the same density of soil showed dense sand behavior or loose sand behavior depending upon the confining pressure. Especially relative density 80% of gravelly soil showed loose sand behavior under high confining pressure. However the gravelly soils with similar state parameters showed similar stress behaviors. It can bee seen that state parameter is useful tool to evaluate undrained behavior of gravelly soils. Also state parameter and undrained strength showed good correlations.

Liquefaction generally occurs in loose sandy soils, whereas static (i.e., post) liquefaction is reported to occasionally take place in gravel soils (i.e., gravel-sand mixtures). Recent studies imply specific in situ parameters such as relative density or effective stress correlate with the static liquefaction potential of gravel soils, although they are insufficient to quantitatively estimate the liquefaction potential of gravel soils. In this study, the mechanism and the phenomena of static (post) liquefaction in gravel soils have been studied in detail through laboratory experiments. A state parameter (ψ) has been adopted to evaluate the static liquefaction and stress variation behaviors of gravel soils for a steady state Condition. Undrained (CU) triaxial tests were performed on gravel soils with different initial densities and confinement levels. State parameters for specific gravel contents at various initial relative densities are obtained from experimental programs, and are correlated with the liquefaction resistance of gravel soils. The liquefaction potential of gravel soils is then analyzed in terms of external and internal factors. The results indicate that the state parameter is an effective indicator of static liquefaction of gravel soils.
