Purpose: Vascular calcification (VC) scores on simple plain radiographic films are known to be associated with coronary artery disease (CAD) and mortality. The present study was designed to demonstrate a correlation between VC scores of the hands and pelvis, and feet and lateral lumbar spine on plain radiographs. In addition, we analyzed the usefulness of checking all the plain radiographs for assessment of pre-existing CAD. Methods: We recruited 61 hemodialysis (HD) patients from OO Dialysis Center. We checked the plain radiographic films of the feet, hands, pelvis, and lateral lumbar spine and evaluated VC scores with previously reported methods. We defined CAD based on myocardial scans, echocardiography, or coronary angiography. Results: Positive associations were found between the VC scores of the feet, VC scores of the hands and pelvis, scores of abdominal aortic calcifications (AACs), and CAD. Approximately 30% of patients who had CAD could be missed based on a single VC scoring method. Patients who showed any one finding among the AAC scores >5, VC scores of the pelvis and hands >3 or arterial media calcifications of the feet on plain radiographs had a high sensitivity (93.8%) and a high negative predictive value (96.3%) for the presence of CAD. Conclusion: Each VC score was highly inter-correlated. All three VC scoring methods on plain radiographic films are useful screening tests for the presence of CAD in HD patients.

Objective : The electroacupunture(EA) is frequently used to enhance stroke rehabilitation. Many studies about spasticity after stroke with EA were undergone. But mainly the elctrophysiologic character of EA is compared such as the frequency, waveform, intensity andvoltage of EA stimulation. There is no study that what is more effective the EA on Yin or Yang meridians to spastic patients afterstroke in traditional concept. So we compared the effect between Yin and Yang meridians EA to the stroke spasticity. Methods :53 spasticity patients with hemiplegic stroke were randomized into two groups. 27 patients were treated by the EA on Yinmeridians for elbow joint spasticity(named Yin EA group). The other 26 patients were treated by the EA on Yang meridians(namedYang EA group). The frequency of stimulation was 2Hz and the intensity was set at a level sufficient to include muscle contractionduring 3 weeks. Outcomes were assessed by modified Ashworth scale, Fugl-Meyer score and modified Barthel index.Result :In terms of spasticity, only Yang meridians group showed statistically significant improved, in terms of motor function, Yin meridiansgroup is significantly more effective than Yang meridians group, and in terms of ADL, comparision between Yin and Yangmeridians group is not significantly meaningful. Conclusion : These results support that the effect of Yin and Yang EA on stroke patients is classified. For antispastic effect the Yin meridians EA is more effective and for motor rehabilitation Yang meridians EA is more effective.

Objectives : The weight reduction program with very low calorie diet(VLCD) for women generally reduce bone mineral density(BMD). So many treatments were done to prevent side effect of the weight reduction program and herbal diet meditation were often used in oriental medicine. This research were done in order to study the effect of VLCD and herbal diet meditation, Chegamuiyiintang on BMD. Methods : This clinical research carried out 22 cases of pre-menopausal outpatients with obesity during 1 month. To evaluate the effect Chegamuiyiin-tang with VLCD on BMD, the weight, BMI, percent body fat, WHR, BMD(T-score) were estimated in pretreatment and post-treatment. Results : The mean weight reduction afetr 1 month was 6.87±1.54 Kg(10.28 % of initial weight), BMI reduction was 2.35±0.65 Kg/m2, percent body fat reduction was 3.40±1.01%, WHR reduction was 0.04±0.01. But BMD(in T-score) had significant increase. Conclusions : Generally VLCD were estimated to reduces BMD, but VLCD with herbal diet meditation, Chegamuiyiin-tanghas positive effect on BMD in pre-menopausal women during short term(1 month).

Objectives :This study was conducted to investigate the effetcs of UCP(uncoupling protein) 1-4 polymorphisms on obesity and weight loss. For this, we analyzed association between polymorphisms of UCP 1-4 and phenotypes of obesity(BMI, percent-body-fat, and abdominal fat area) and changed percentage of phenotypes(BMI and percent-body-fat) after treatment. Methods :A total of 425 Korean women were recruited from obesity clinic of Kirin Oriental Medical Hospital(Seoul, Korea). All subjects were BMI over 25. Among total subjects, 207 females treated with VLCD(very low calorie diet) and oriental medical therapy for a month were analyzed that UCP phenotype influenced on change of obesity-phenotypes. For genotyping of SNPs, genomic DNA from each subject was extracted from whole blood and genotyped by TaqMan Method. Haplotypes and their frequencies were inferred using algorithm, HapAnalyzer Program. BMI, percent-body-fat, and total-subcutaneous-visceral abdominal fat area were measured. Associations among those values, polymorphisms, and haplotypes of UCPs were analyzed by age-adjusted general linear model. Results & Conclusions : In this study, GG type of UCP-1 -1766A>G, AG, GG type of UCP-2 -866A>G, CC, CT type of UCP-2 +4787C>T, CG, GG type of UCP-3 +2564C>G, AG, GG type of UCP-3 +3106A>G, TC, CC type of UCP-3 +4589T>C, and -/ht, ht/ht type of UCP2-3 ht1 were associated with obesity and played a role as a resistance gene of weight loss.

Objective: Bee venom has traditionally been used in Oriental medicine to relieve inflammatory pain related to arthritis. While several investigators have evaluated the effect of bee venom treatment by subcutaneous injection technique, the effect of bee venom treatment by intra-articular injection technique has not been examined. In this study, we tried to examine the therapeutic effect of intra-articular bee venom injection on osteoarthritis of knee joint. Methods: 51 outpatients with osteoarthritis visiting Dept. of oriental rehabilitation medicine were randomized into two groups: 26 samples and 25 controls. Control group took traditional needle acupuncture therapies, 3 times a week for 4 weeks, while sample group(B-V group) took the same treatments and intra-articular bee venom injection therapies in addition. Outcomes were measured by 100mm VAS(Visual Analogue Scale), WOMAC(Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index), and Lequesne`s index at baseline and every week until 4 weeks. Results: 1. B-V group showed significantly greater improvement at 1 week in VAS score.2. B-V group showed significantly greater improvement at 2 weeks in WOMAC total score. 3. B-V group showed significantly greater improvement in WOMAC pain and disability score after treatments. 4. WOMAC stiffness scores were not significantly different between B-V and control group after treatments. 5. B-V group showed significantly greater improvement in Lequesne`s index at 3 weeks. Conclusions: In this clinical study, intra-articular bee venom injection therapy was more effective in improving pain, disability of knee joint caused by osteoarthritis than traditional needle acupuncture therapy alone.
