Background/Aims: As the relationship between gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) and interstitial cells of Cajal had become clear, GIST is defined as CD117 positive mesenchymal tumors, and recognized as a new distinct entity among mesenchymal tumors presenting as gastrointestinal submucosal tumors (SMT). To evaluate GISTs in the category of SMTs, we analyzed mesenchymal SMTs immunohistochemically and clinicopathologically. Methods: Forty-five patients with mesenchymal SMTs, who received surgical or endoscopic resection were retrospectively analyzed for clinical parameters. Immunohistochemical staining for CD117, CD34, NSE, SMA, and S-100 was also performed. Results: Among 45 tumors, 41 (91.1%) expressed CD117 and were diagnosed as GIST. The most frequent location was the gastric body. Except esophageal location (73.3%), GISTs accounted for 100% of SMTs in the gastrointestinal tract. The mixed myoid-neural differentiated type and the spindle cell shape were most common. Metastasis was observed in 5 patients (11%). All of them had tumors larger than 5 cm and died. Their mean survival was 4.6 months. Conclusions: GIST accounted for majority (91.1%) of SMTs. The presence of metastasis and tumor size at the time of diagnosis indicate poor prognostic factors. Sediment discharge by long-term runoff in the Nakdong River watershed should be predicted for the maintenance and management of the Nakdong River newly changed by the four major river restoration project. The data establishment by the analysis of runoff and sediment discharge using the long-term watershed model is necessary to predict possible problems by incoming sediments and to prepare countermeasures for the maintenance and management. Therefore, sediment discharges by long-term runoff in the main points of the Nakdong River were calculated using SWAT(soil and water assessment tool) model and the relations and features between rainfall, runoff, and sediment discharge were analyzed in this study. As a result of sediment discharge calculation in the main points of the Nakdong River and tributaries, the sediment discharge at the outlet of the Naesung Stream was greater than the Jindong Station in the Lower Nakdong River from 1999 to 2008 except the years with low precipitation. The sediment discharge at the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage (NREB) was corresponding to 20% of the Jindong Station which is located about 80 km upstream from NREB.

To study the efficacy monoclonal antibody(MAb) against bovine rotavirus(BCV) in treatment of calf diarrhea, the MAb was fed to 166 calves with diarrhea from Chung-buk area. The results were summarized as follows. 1. Among the 1,049 calves investigated, 166(16%) calves were infected with BCV. 2. The monthly rate of BCV infection were higher in October to December compared with other months of the year. 3. Among the 166 calves with diarrhea, 137(83%) calves were recovered. 4. Young calves within 7-day-old were more effective in treatment than other ages and the rate of treatment was 86%. 5. Most effective period for treatment of rotavirus was at the first stage of infection.

In an effort to improve the quality of meat and to monitor farms, residual tetracyclines in local beef and pork produced in the province of North Chung-cheong were determined by a EEC 4-plate, Charm Ⅱ and HPLC, respectively. The results were summarized as follows; 1. Of the 547 samples, 4 beef and 13 pork samples were judged to be positive by EEC 4 -plate method. 2. Detection rates of tetracyclines by type 1(+ + - -) and type 2(+ + + or + + ± -) micro-bial growth inhibition in EEC 4-plate method were 100% and 71%, respectively. 3. Of 17 positive samples, 6 were positive for tetracyclines, 4 were positive for tetracyclines and sulfonamides, 1 was positive for sulfonamides, and 2 were positive for others by Charm Ⅱ test. 4. The best eluents were 0.01M methanolic oxalic acid, and the ideal temperature for stable concentration was 40℃ as optimal HPLC analytical conditions for the detection of tetracy-clines. 5. Of the 10 positive samples for tetracyclines by Charm Ⅱ test, tetracyclines were confirmed in 2 beef and 6 pork samples, using HPLC, at levels ranging from 3.64~4.22 ppm and 0.2~1.20 ppm, respectively.

The purpose of this study was to identify the change of the dietary pattern, food craving in accordance with menstrual cycle among women with the premenstrual dysphoric disorder(PMDD) and women with no premenstrual symptoms(Non-PMS). The 24 subjects were divided by two groups, PMDD group and Non-PMS group. And the change of dietary pattern and food craving were measured for 4 weeks according to the menstrual cycle. The frequency of meal, the amount of meal and the change of palatability of meat intake, fatty food, carbonate drinks, fruit, confectionery and caffeine containing beverage were more significantly increased in luteal and menstrual phase than follicular phase without regard to PMDD group and Non-PMS group, but there were no statistically difference between groups. The change of palatability of vegetable & alcohol were no difference among the phase without regard to PMDD group and Non-PMS group, and there were no statistically difference between groups. Above the findings showed that the change of women's dietary pattern has connection with the change of menstrual cycle. It is considered that unconsidered variables in this study could be applied for the therapy of premenstrual symptom or management method in connection with variable related to menstrual cycle the systematic study is requested.
