Four lignan compounds including gomisin J ( 1 ), schizandrin ( 2 ), gomisin A ( 3 ), and angeloyl gomisin H ( 4 ) have been isolated from the MeOH extract of Schizandra chinensis fruits. The evaluation for protective effect of compounds 1 - 4 against tert -butyl hydroperoxide ( t -BHP)-induced cytotoxicity in hippocampal HT22 cell line was conducted. Compound 1 showed significant protective effect with an EC 50 v a l u e o f 4 3 . 3 ± 2 . 3 µ M, whereas compounds 2 - 4 were inactive. Trolox, one of the well-known antioxidant, used as a positive control, and also showed protective effect with an EC 50 v a l u e o f 2 1 3 . 8 ± 8 . 4 µ M. These results suggest that compound 1 may possess the neuroprotective activity against oxidant-induced cellular injuries.
Constituents of the Aerial Parts of Agrimonia pilosa

Four ursane type triterpenes have been isolated from the methanolic extract of the aerial parts ofAgrimonia pilosa Ledeb. (Rosaceae) through repeated silica gel and reverse-phase C-18 column chromatography.Their chemical structures were elucidated as ursolic acid (1), pomolic acid (2), tormentic acid (3), and corosolicacid (4) on the basis of their MS, 1H-, and 13C-NMR spectral data. Compounds 2 and 4 were isolated from thegenus of Agrimonia for the first time.
Cytoprotective Constituent of Hoveniae Lignum on Both Hep G2 Cells and Rat Primary Hepatocytes

A phytochemical investigation of the EtOH extract of Hoveniae Lignum yielded four phenolic compounds, phloretin (1), 5-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-γ-valerolactone (2), (–)-epiafzelechin (3), and maesopsin (4). Compound 1 was hepatoprotective against tacrine-induced cytotoxicity in human liver-derived Hep G2 cells with an EC50 value of 37.55 ± 0.42 µM. Compound 1 (0.4- 200 µM) also significantly reduced tert-butyl hydroperoxide-induced cytotoxicity in rat primary hepatocytes as measured by the cellular leakage of lactate dehydrogenase and the level of aspartate transaminase.

Taraxaci Herba has long been used in herbal medicine for their choleretic, anti-heumatic and diuretic properties. In the present study, we investigated the effects of origin plants of Taraxaci Herba, Taraxacum coreanum Nakai, as an anti-inflammatory agent in lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced microglial activation in BV2 cells. NNMBS273, the EtOH extracts of roots T. coreanum was examined for anti-neuronal inflammatory activity as new drug development. The roots of T. coreanum, showed the potent anti-neuroinflammatory effects on LPS-induced inflammation in microglial BV2 cells. The anti-inflammatory effects of NNMBS273, the EtOH extracts of roots T. coreanum was demonstrated by the suppression of pro-inflammatory mediators, including pro-inflammatory enzymes (inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2) and cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β). These results suggest that the roots T. coreanum may be a promising candidate for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases related to neuroinflammation.

Glutamate-induced oxidative injury contributes to neuronal degeneration in many central nervous system (CNS) diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy and ischemia. Inducible heme oxygenase (HO)-1 acts against oxidants that are thought to play a role in the pathogenesis of these diseases. The EtOH extracts of Viola mandshurica (NNMBS274), Viola patrinii (NNMBS275) and Viola papilionacea Pursh (NNMBS276), origin plants of Violae Herba, showed the potent neuroprotective effects on glutamate-induced neurotoxicity. Among them, NNMBS275, the extract of V. patrinii possessed the protective effects against glutamate toxicity by inducing the expression of heme oxygenase (HO)-1 in the mouse hippocampal HT22 cells. These results suggest that extracts of V. patrinii could be the effective candidates for the treatment of ROS-related neurological diseases. Furthermore, it is suggested that the protective effects of V. patrinii extract due to inducing the expression of HO-1 as an antioxidant/cytoprotective target

In the course of search for hepatoprotective agents from oriental traditional medicines, one compound was isolated from the MeOH extract of the fruits of Schizandra chinensis, and its structure was determined as gomisin J (1). The evaluation for hepatoprotective activity of isolated compound 1 on drug-induced cytotoxicity was conducted, and compound 1 showed protective effect with an EC50value of 86.0 ± 5.3 μM against tacrine-induced cytotoxicity in Hep G2 cells. One of the well-known hepatoprotective agents, silybin, used as a positive control, and the hepatoprotective effect of compound 1 is similar with that of silybin (EC50 value = 90.5 ± 9.8 μM).

Based on DPPH radical scavenging activity and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity, the MeOH extracts of 139 crude drugs were screened in order to search for antioxidants. Among tested samples, the extracts from the seed of Nelumbo nucifera, the fruit of Terminalia chebula var. gangetia, the root of Salvia miltiorhiza, the fruit of Ziziphus jujuba var. innermis, the root bark of Paeonia moutan, the fruit of Rubus coreanus, the fruit of Zanthoxylum schinifolium, the lignum of Caesalpinia sappan, the leaf of Pinus densiflora, the rhizome of Alpinia officinarum, the fruit of Syzygium aromaticum, the ramulus and uncus of Uncaria rhynchophylla, the root bark of Lycium chinense, and the fruit of Alpinia katsumadai showed a relatively strong antioxidative activity. Furthermore, the BuOH fraction from the extract of N. nucifera showed a potent activity in each assay. The isolation of bioactive compounds has been carried out and will be reported in the next paper.
