The methanol extract of two kinds of liquorice on Korean market was examined for basic components by a general alkaloid extraction method. The hydrochloride of the components gave all positive reactions to five coloration and precipitation tests. Four coloration tests on the thin-layer chromatograms of the free bases showed three to five spots which are considered to be basic.

In order to investigate the effect of "Whangryonhaedok-Tang" on the anti-inflammatory, ileum of mice, blood pressure, blood glucose, total cholesterol and antibacterial activity, those pharmacological actions were conducted. The results of this studies were summerized as follows; Rat hind paw edema induced by acetic acid was inhibited. In mice, tone of intestinal smooth muscle was suppressed with the treatment of sample and intestinal contractions induced by BaCl₂ was inhibited. Hypertensive effect was not observed in rabbits but was observed by the water extract of "Whangryonhaedok-Tang" excluded Phellodendri Cortex in rabbits. The incleased blood glucose levels in alloxandiabetic rabbits were significantly decreased by the oral administration of the sample I after 6 days. The total cholesterol levels in alloxan-induced rabbits were significantly decreased by the oral administration of the sample I after 9 days. Antibacterial activity was observed. In addition, we thought the pharmacological actions were significantly noted by the sample III(Methanol soluble fraction) because of the purification of effective components.

In order to investigate the pharmacological action of the combined preparation of crude drugs, "Saengkankunbi-Tang" were studied. These studies were conducted in an attempt to investigate the effect of "Saengkankunbi-Tang" on activities of the liver enzyme, protein contents and the excretory action of bile juice in the serum of CCl₄-intoxicated rabbits. The results of this investigate were summerized as follows; GOT, GPT activities and total cholesterol contents in the serum of rabbits induced by CCl₄ were shown to the remarkable decrease with the passage of the time in the oral administration of the sample. Albumin contents in the serum of rabbits induce by CCl₄ were noted to the significant increase with the passage of the time. Serum total protein contents were noted to the significant increase only the 4th and 6th day. BSP accumulation contents in the serum of rabbits induced by CCl₄ showed the remarkable decrease with the passage of the time.

Experimental studies were implemented to evaluate clinical efficacy of "Daeshiho-Tang" and to validate Oriental medicine description of the recipe which has been widely used in metabolic diseases and febrile diseases. Following results were obtained; 1. Suppressive action was shown on convulsion due to cerebrocortical causes but no such action was noted either myelic or diencephatic causes in mice. 2. Analgesic and antipyretic actions were recognized in mice, rats and rabbits. 3. Antispasmodic actions were recognized on contraction of the ileum induced by BaCl₂ and histamine in mice and guinea-pigs. 4. Transport accelerating action of the small intestine was gained in mice.

Although the "Samulanshin-Tang" has been widely used in clinical purposes in the oriental medicine, its clinical efficacy is only documented for the case of palpitation in the Oriental medical reference. The present experiments were undertaken to investigate the clinical efficacy of "Samulanshin-Tang" comparing effects with animal experiments and to validate its orintal medicine description. Following results were obtained; 1) Suppressive action was shown on convulsion due to cerebrocortical and diencephalic causes in Fraction I and II, but no such action was noted myelic causes in mice. 2) Sedative, analgesic and antipyretic actions were noted by Fraction III. 3) Relaxing action was shown on the isolated ileum in mice and antagonistic action was seen on acetylcholine and BaCl₂-induced contractions of the ilem that the direct action of the intestinal smooth muscle was recognized in mice and rats.

Analgesic, anticonvulsive, sedative and antipyretic actions of Yangkyuksanwha tang which is composed of nine crude drugs including Rehmanniae Radix, and its effects on isolated ileum and blood vessel were investigated. The results of the studies were summerized as follows; 1. Analgesic and antipyretic effects were observed. 2. Suppressive actions were not shown on the convulsion induced by strychnine, but significant effects were noted on the convulsion induced by picrotoxin. 3. A prolongation of anesthetic time induced by pentobarbital sodium was significantly observed. 4. Relaxing actions were noted on the ileum of mice, and also, same effects were recognized on the contraction of the ileum due to acetylcholine chloride and barium chloride. 5. The expansion of blood vessels by relaxation of smooth muscle and hypotensive effects were noted.

In order to investigate experimentally the clinical effects of Soeuminsohapwon that was prescribed to cure cerebral hemorrhage, palpitation etc, the author tested various activities of extract from the Soeuminsohapwhangwon by the method prescribed in the experimental part. The results of the studies were summarized as follows: Suppressive action was not shown on the convulsion induced by strychnine, but significant effect was noted on the convulsion induced by picrotoxin and caffeine. In acetic acid method, analgesic effect was noted. A prolongation of anesthetic time by pentobarbital sodium and antipyretic effect was observed. Relaxing action was noted on the ileum of mice, also same effect was recognized on contraction of the ileum due to acetylcholine, barium chloride and histamine. The expansion of blood vessels by relaxation of smooth muscle and hypotensive action were noted. According to the above results, effects based on oriental medical references were approximate to the actual experimental results.

In order to investigate the pharmacological activities of the combined preparation of crude drugs, Chunghyulgangki-Tang was studied. Chunghyulgangki-Tang has been widely used to cerebral apoploxy, hypertension and arteriosclerosis, etc. In this study, water extract of Chunghyulgangki-Tang was conducted in attempt to investigate for analgesic, sedative, antipyretic, isolated ileum and heart, blood vessels and blood pressure action in mice, frogs, rats, guinea-pigs and rabbits. The following results were obtained; Analgesic action by the acetic acid stimulating method in mice was recognized. Sedative activities by the wheel cage method and rotor rod method in mice were shown. Prolonged action against the hypnotic duration induced by thiopental-Na was significantly noted in mice. The effect of antipyretic in endotoxin febrile rats was significantly recognized. Spontaneous motility of the isolated ilem of mice was suppressed and contractions of the isolated ileum of mice and guinea-pigs induced by acetylcholine chloride, barium chloride and histamine were remarkably inhibited. Acceleration of isolated heart motility was shown in frogs. Vaso-dilating and hypotensive actions were recognized in rabbits. According to the above results, effects based on the oriental medicinal references were approximate to the actural experimental results.

In order to characterize the chemical change of the constituents and pharmacological transformation of Glycyrrhizae Radix(GR) which may occur during its processing, processed GR has been investigated in comparison with unprocessed GR. It was found that glycyrrhizin(GL) and other several constituents contained in GR were remarkably changed by processing. and the decrease of contents of GL was identified by making use of thin layer chromatography-chromatoscanner. And also, it was found that glycyrrhetic acid (GA) was identified from processed GR. We recognized that commonly processed GR showed less hemolytic effect than unprocessed GR and processed GR at 190℃. It was also found that commonly processed GR showed more effective analgesic effect and prolonged the duration of hypnosis induced by pentobarbital-Na in mice as compared with corresponding unprocessed GR and processed GR at 190℃. And then, commonly processed GR significantly suppressed the increases of s-GOT, s-GPT and s-LDH activities in injured mice induced by CCl₄.
