Cefquinome, a fourth generation cephalosporin, has been solely used for veterinary medicine and has a broad antibacterial spectrum against gram-negatives and gram-positives being very stable to β-lactamases. This study was conducted to evaluate the bioequivalence of two cefquinome 2.5% products in piglets. Plasma cefquinome concentrations were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS). Mean maximum concentration (C_(max)) of test product (Cequus^®) and reference product (Cobactan^®) were 4.34 ± 0.58 and 4.22 ± 0.47 μg/mL, and mean area under the concentration time curve (AUC_(0→∞)) values were 10.43 ± 1.96 and 10.25 ± 2.98 μg·h/mL, respectively. The 90% confidence intervals for the ratio of C_(max) (0.941-1.115), and AUC_(0-∞) (0.927-1.172) values for the test and reference products were within the acceptable bioequivalence limit of 0.80-1.25. It is concluded that two commercial cefquinome injectable solutions are bioequivalent in their extent of drug absorption in piglets.

This study was performed to evaluation the skin and eye irritation of etofenprox 8% and spinosad 4% combination in male New Zealand White rabbits. In skin irritation test, the combination of etofenprox and spinosad did not showed any change of body weight but caused slight skin irritation with the P.I.I. (primary irritation index) value 0.25. The etofenprox and spinosad combination showed severe eye irritation 1 h, 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h after ocular treatment, having the A.O.I. (acute ocular irritation) value of 37.3. Therefore, these result indicated that the combination of etofenprox and spinosad might be irritant formulation on eye and skin.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of surfactin in combination with Bacillus subtilis BC1212 isolated from Korean soybean paste, on feed utilization and growth performance during 4 weeks in weaning piglets. Eighteen weaning piglets (Landrace × Yorkshire × Duroc; weighing 7.68±0.97 kg) were divided into control (n=9) and experimental groups (n=9). The treatments included a control group consisting of the basal diet with no additives (control) and an experimental group consisting of the basal diet supplemented with 1 g of surfactin C and 1.0×109 CFU of Bacillus subtilis BC1212/kg feed. Piglets fed Bacillus subtilis BC1212 increased in average daily weight gain and feed efficiency. In comparison with the control group, the fecal Bacillus subtilis were significantly increased and the fecal coliform bacteria were markedly reduced in the experimental group. In addition, Bacillus subtilis BC1212 had excellent acid and bile tolerance. The treatment of surfactin (50 μg ml-1) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated swine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) for 6 h showed a significant inhibitory effect on INF-γ, TNF-α and NO secretion (p<0.05) in comparison with LPS treatment alone but not on IL-10 secretion, with levels of secreted IL-10 similar to those secreted by PBMCs stimulated with LPS alone. Supplementation with surfactin in combination with Bacillus subtilis BC1212 in diets improved the ecosystem of gastrointestinal tract by increasing probiotic population and enhanced the systemic immune response in weaned piglets.

The present study was carried out to investigate the potential acute toxicity of safflower seed by a single oral dose in ICR mice. Twenty animals of each sex were randomly assigned to four groups of 5 rats each and were administered singly by gavage at dose levels of 0, and 2,500 mg/kg bodyweight. Mortalities, clinical findings, and body weight changes were found and complete gross postmortem examinations were performed. Throughout the study period, no treatment-related deaths were observed. There were no adverse effects in clinical signs, body weight, and gross findings at any dose tested. The results showed that the single oral administration of safflower seed did not cause any toxic effect at the dose levels of 2,500 mg/kg in rats and the minimal lethal dose was considered to be over 2,500 mg/kg body weight for both sexes.

This study was carried out to investigate the acute toxicity of surfactin C in mice. Surfactin C was administered orally at does of 0, 381, 610, 977, 1562 and 2500 ㎎/㎏. Number of deaths, clinical signs, body weights, feed and water consumptions, and biochemical examinations were investigated for 14 days after single oral administration of surfactin C. LD?? value was over 2500 ㎎/㎏ in mice. In addition, no differences were found between control and treated groups in clinical signs, body weight gains, hematology, serum chemistry, feed and water consumptions. The results indicate that surfactin C did not show any toxic effects at 2500 ㎎/㎏ in mice.
