The measurement of contact wire uplift in electric railways is one of the most important test parameters to accepting the maximum permitted speed of new electric vehicles and pantographs. The contact wire uplift can be measured over short periods when the pantograph passes monitoring stations. In this paper, a high-speed image measurement system and its image processing method are being developed to evaluate dynamic uplift of overhead contact wires caused by pantograph contact forces of Korea Tilting Train eXpress (TTX) and Korea Train eXpress (KTX). The image measurement system was implemented utilizing a high-speed CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) camera and gigabit ethernet LAN. Unlike previous systems, the uplift measurement system using high speed camera is installed on the side of the rail, making maintenance convenient. On-field verification of the uplift measurement system for overhead contact wire using high speed camera was conducted by measuring uplift of the TTX followed by operation speeds at the Honam conventional line and high-speed railway line. The proposed high-speed image measurement system to evaluate dynamic uplift of overhead contact wires shows promising on-field applications for high speed trains such as KTX and TTX.

The measurement of contact wire wear in electric railways is one of the key test parameters to increase speed and maintain safety in electric railways. Wear caused by continuous interaction between pantographs and contact wires has a negative effect on current collection quality and severely damaged contact wires might cause hazardous accidents. This paper introduces a non-contact optical-based contact wire wear measuring system that will replace conventional wear detecting methods conducted by maintenance vehicles or workers. The system is implemented by high-speed cameras that can collect images of contact wires during vehicle operation, a laser used to create images profile of the contact wire surface, and a computer used to process the collected images. The proposed system is designed to assist maintenance of overhead contact lines by creating geometrically plotted images of contact wires to detect contact wire wear during operation on conventional lines or high-speed lines.

Movies have now established themselves as one of the most popular study materials for those who aspire to improve their English proficiency. Since movies use authentic English, however, they cannot be readily comprehended by typical college students. In this respect, Korean subtitles play an instrumental role in helping the students overcome obstacles they face. Regrettably, incorrect translations compromise the reliability of movies as a source of studying English. If these mistranslations are allowed to go unchecked, students might soon shy away from using movies as a means of studying English. This study, aimed at analyzing the patterns of mistranslations in movies, focuses on the mistakes related to erroneous identifications of parts of speech and sentence constructions. Examples from Oscar-winning or Oscar-nominated pictures and other top-grossing movies are discussed so that instructors and students of movie English classes may become more adept at identifying and correcting the mistranslations in Korean subtitles. This paper concludes that the misinterpretations are mainly due to the translators’ insufficient grammar knowledge as well as to inadequate working environments they are often forced to work in

Partialor complete absence of the posterior arch of the atlas is a well-documented anomaly but a relatively rare condition. This condition is usually asymptomatic so most are diagnosed incidentally. There have been a few documented cases of congenital defects of the posterior arch of the atlas combined with atlantoaxial subluxation. We report a very rare case of congenital anomaly of the atlas combined with atlantoaxial subluxation, that can be misdiagnosed as posterior arch fracture.
