        Inhibitory effects of three monoterpenes from ginger essential oil on growth and aflatoxin production of Aspergillus flavus and their gene regulation in aflatoxin biosynthesis

        Ginger (Zingiber officinale) essential oil (ZOE) possesses strong antibacterial and antifungal activities. In this study, the antifungal activity of ZOE against Aspergillus flavus was investigated, and a chemical analysis was carried out to identify compounds that control fungal growth. A total of 37 compounds were identified by gas chromatographic analysis with a mass detector, and the antifungal and antiaflatoxigenic properties of three constituents, c-terpinene, isoborneol, and citral, against A. flavus were tested. All compounds exhibited strong antifungal activity at 1000 lg/mL, and the antifungal activity of c-terpinene and citral remained until treatment with tenfold diluted solution. The decrease in aflatoxin production by the three compounds was observed until treatment with 10 lg/mL. To evaluate their antiaflatoxigenic activity, RT-qPCR was used to compare the expression of 11 genes involved in aflatoxin biosynthesis by A. flavus. Among the three compounds, c-terpinene and citral markedly reduced the expression of most of the tested genes but a different pattern of downregulation of the expression was observed. c-Terpinene did not downregulate aflR, aflS, and yap, whereas citral did not alter the expression of aflC and aflG. Therefore, c-terpinene and citral may have the potential to control A. flavus growth and aflatoxin production in agricultural products, including at the storage stage.

        Salient Linguistic Features of EFL Learner Spoken Corpus Elicited by a Computerized Speaking Test

        This study attempted to identify the linguistic features (utterance, vocabulary, and syntactic) of English that are recognized as salient elements by native speakers. The oral responses of 60 EFL postsecondary learners comprised of six levels collected from a standardized computer-based speaking test were first transcribed to build a spoken corpus and were then analyzed for utterance, vocabulary, and syntactic features. In addition, scores of holistic and analytic scoring methods were compared. The findings were as follows: (1) Most of the indices of utterance, vocabulary, and syntactic structure demonstrated a significant difference between upper and lower proficiency groups. (2) The majority of indices had significant correlations with speaking proficiency, and the highest correlations with vocabulary indices. (3) The indices of all three categories accounted significantly for the variance of the speaking ability. (4) A very high correlation was found between holistic and analytic scoring methods. Based on the results that indicated which linguistic factors are considered significant by native speakers, meaningful implications could be drawn for effective methods of teaching speaking in the EFL environment focusing on vocabulary and willingness to communicate. Finally, the issue of comparability between holistic or analytic scoring methods was discussed.

        비트겐슈타인 후기이론에 비추어 본 교육에서의 대화

        Though recently the importance of dialogue in education are getting big, at the same time it is questioned if so-called dialogues considered as dialogue in real educating situations are genuine dialogue. Actually, they might be regarded as monologue in the viewpoint of Wittgenstein's language game theory. The purpose of this paper is rethinking the meaning of dialogue in education within perspective of late Wittgenstein's language philosophy. It would be the critique on the ideologies which emphasize dialogue presupposed as common rules and it would be the task trying to grope for new alternative about the question of dialogue in education. For the sake of such end, this paper reviewed Wittgenstein's language game theory and doing so tried to derive the meaning of dialogue in education. As for Wittgenstein, dialogue is exchange of meanings between the others who do not share common rules. Within his perspective, ideal types of dialogue situation could be regarded as indeed monologue in that such dialogue presuppose identical teller. And as far as such presupposition would be persisted, the dialogues between teachers and students might be superficial conversation or might derive mutual alienation. So if the students could be significant others in the relationship of educational dialogue, it is required that teachers should prepare new rules of language from students. 교육에서 대화가 갖는 중요성에대한 이해가 높아지고 있음에도 불구하고 실제로는 상호성을 바탕으로 한 대화(dialogue)보다는 대화로 오인되는 독백(monologue)들이 실천되고 있는 것 이 아닌가 하는 의문과 함께 비트겐슈타인의 후기 언어철학에 비추어 교육에서의 대화에 대 해 다시 성찰해 보는 것이 이 글의 목적이다. 이는 그동안 공통 규칙을 전제한 대화를 강조 해왔던 이념들의 진단과는 다른 종류의 진단을 내리고 교육에서의 대화와 관련된 새로운 대 안의 가능성을 탐색해 보는 작업이 되기도 할 것이다. 그와 같은 목적을 위해, 이 글에서는 비트겐슈타인이 언어와 세계의 관계를 조망하기 위해 취한 극단적 회의의 자세가 갖는 의미 와 그의 독창적인 언어 게임이론을 살펴보고, 이것이 교육에서의 대화에서 갖는 의미를 도 출하고자 하였다. 비트겐슈타인에게 있어 대화는 사전에 주어진 규칙을 공유하지 않는 타자 들 사이의 의미 교환이다. 그의 관점에서는 이상적 유형의 대화 상황으로 간주되어 왔던 것 들이 실은 동질의 대화자를 전제로 한다는 점에서 모놀로그로 간주될 수 있으며, 이 같은 전제가 유지되는 한 교사와 학생 사이의 대화는 형식적인 소통이 되거나 상호 소외를 초래 하는 결과를 초래할 수 있다. 그러므로 교육적 대화의 관계에서 학생이 의미 있는 타자가 되려면 교사가 학생들이 건네 오는 언어게임의 새로운 규칙에 응전의 준비를 갖추는 자세가 요구된다고 할 수 있다.

      • 3차원 그래픽 데이터베이스에서 객체간의 전후 순서결정 기법

        비행 시뮬레이터, 가상현실 등과 같은 3차원 그래픽 데이터베이스의 응용에서는 비행 장면(scene) 및 가상 세계를 걸어다니면서 바라보는 장면을 실시간에 디스플레이하는 기술이 필요하다. 페인터 알고리즘을 이용하여 실시간으로 장면을 디스플레이를 하기 위해서는 시점을 중심으로 가장 먼 객체부터 가장 가까운 객체까지의 객체 순서가 필요하다. 그래서 본 논문에서는 Z-순선화 기법을 이용하여 객체의 전후 순서를 결정할 수 있는 기법을 제안하였다. Flight simulation and virtual reality applications in the 3-dimensional graphic database fields are needed techniques to display virtual space in real time. Using painter's algorithm to display scene in real time is needed to order object from the farthest object to the nearest object in view point. In this paper, we propose a method to decide ordering using the z-order method.

      • 식생활 라이프스타일에 따른 녹차 소비행태 연구

        The purpose of this study was to analyze consumer`s green tea selection attributes and consumption behaviors depending on their food-related lifestyle. The result of this study would contribute to the design of marketing strategies to increase the green tea consumption. For this purpose, the author sampled those who were in 20`s or older, living in the capital city area and who had drunk the green tea within a month before the survey. 300 responses were used to analyze subjects` demographic variables, green tea consumption behaviors and its selection attributes. As a result of the factor analysis for the consumers` selection attributes, three factors have been determined: rationality, professionalism and demonstration. It was demonstrated in this study that consumers` green tea selection attributes differed partially significantly in demographic variables - age, marital status, job . depending on food-related lifestyles. In this study, ANOVA was constructed in order to analyze the differences of consumers` green tea selection attributes depending on their food-related lifestyle. As a result, A significant difference was shown in the factors of rationality and professionalism. Moreover, ``rationality`` was especially scored highest. According to chi-square test for consumers` consumption behavior characteristics depending on their food-related lifestyles, it was found that greed tea drinking frequency and preference differed significantly depending on the food-related lifestyles. In this regard, it is necessary to develop more diverse green tea commodities and promote marketing more aggresively. In addition, since most of consumers emphasize importance on food safety, it is necessary to ensure a safe production and distribution system for the green tea.

        Does Reading and Vocabulary Knowledge of Advanced Korean EFL Learners Facilitate Their Writing Performance?

        Although numerous studies have identified the potential relations reading comprehension abilities, vocabulary knowledge, and different language constructs may have with one’s writing competence, not much research exists on the specific roles played by these language- and literacy-related constructs in explaining one’s writing performance in an integrative manner, especially in the cases of second and foreign language learners. This study therefore aims to investigate the relative predictability of reading comprehension and vocabulary knowledge for advanced Korean EFL learner’s writing performance measured both for its form and content qualities, while their English proficiency was taken into consideration. The findings indicate that reading comprehension abilities, vocabulary knowledge, and general English proficiency all had a significant relationship with advanced Korean EFL learners’ structural and linguistic aspects of writing performances. Between reading comprehension abilities and vocabulary knowledge, reading comprehension had a relatively stronger predictability for their writing performance, while vocabulary knowledge only demonstrated indirect effects on writing performances through reading comprehension. The findings from this study have pivotal pedagogical implications for language and literacy instruction in Korean EFL contexts.

        약물 교체가 필요한 조현병 환자에서 Paliperidone Extended Release로의 교체 후 유효성과 안전성에 관한 분석

        ObjectivezzThis study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy, safety, and tolerability of paliperidone extended release (ER) in patients with schizophrenia by switching previous antipsychotics to paliperidone ER. MethodszzAn open-label, 24 weeks, prospective, non-comparative, multi-center study evaluated total 387 patients with schizophrenia requiring a switch in antipsychotic medication due to suboptimal efficacy, intolerability, and non-compliance. Patients were switched to flexible-dose trial of paliperidone ER (3-12 mg/day). Efficacy was measured by Krawiecka Scale, Clinical Global Impression-Schizophrenia-Severity (CGI-SCH-S), Clinical Global Impression-Schizophrenia-Improvement (CGI-SCH-I), sleep visual analog scale (VAS), and Personal and Social Performance Scale (PSP). Safety assessments included adverse events (AEs), evaluation of extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) using the Drug Induced Extrapyramidal Symptoms Scale (DIEPSS), and laboratory tests. ResultszzData from a total of 321 subjects who took the paliperidone ER and had at least one follow-up assessment without a major protocol violation were analyzed. Switching to paliperidone ER led to a significant improvement in the Krawiecka, CGI-SCH-S, CGI-SCH-I, PSP, and DIEPSS scales. However, serum prolactin levels and metabolic parameters including body weight and waist circumference were significantly increased. Insomnia was the most common adverse event. ConclusionzzThis study suggested that patients with schizophrenia who showed insufficient response or intolerance to other previous antipsychotics can be switched to paliperidone ER, with efficacy, safety, and tolerability.

        PRAIRIE 적용 함정의 공기 누출 조건에 따른 수중방사소음 특성 연구

        Recently, a propeller air-induced emitting (PRAIRIE) system has been adopted for naval vessels to reduce propeller cavitation noise. However, air leakage occurs around the injection hole because of the low pressure around the propeller blade. To investigate the noise characteristics of air leakage, we measured underwater radiated noise during sea trials using a shut-off valve. Noise data were analyzed in terms of the band energy level and signal modulation. We found that the air leakage of the PRAIRIE system affects the characteristics of the underwater radiated noise.

        Are Different Types of Vocabulary Needed for Comprehending General and Academic Texts?

        This study examined the relationship between reading and vocabulary within general and academic context. Forty-seven Korean EFL university students who participated in this research were given a reading comprehension test of general and academic topics. Also, vocabulary tests were conducted to measure the students’ size of vocabulary and their knowledge of general and academic words. The results revealed different findings for each type of vocabulary and reading. First, learners’ size of vocabulary significantly predicted reading comprehension, but the predictive power of academic vocabulary was stronger than vocabulary size. Second, general reading comprehension showed a similar result with the overall reading comprehension score in that academic vocabulary made a stronger contribution than vocabulary size. Finally, a different result was found for academic reading comprehension, and students’ size of vocabulary rather than academic vocabulary was the only significant predictor. The results indicate the different characteristics of general and academic reading, which implicates that each type of reading should be taught in a different manner.

      • A Patch-Clamp for detecting the DNA passage

        A patch-clamp circuit of removing the offset with reduced noise was designed and checked in the condition of measuring the ionic current for detecting the passage of DNAs through nano-hole. The significant reduction of noise according to the measurement condition was observed whether the shielding cage surrounds or not, reminding the importance of the extra care for checking the level of the noise. The separation of the command voltage with high input impedance enables the maintenance of the same potential across the counter electrode and the working electrode. The noise level was measured to be around ~ nA, rather higher than the level of the measurement of the DNA passages. The tuning of the offset voltages is needed depending on the electrolyte condition, too.
