        Spatial Integration of Corporate R&D and Mass Production Activities in High-tech Manufacturing: A Case Study of Samsung Electronics

        This paper argues that the high-tech manufacturing sector’s location pattern in favor of the Capital Region is a key variable that can explain both divergent local manufacturing performance and Korea’s monocentric economic geography. My major findings from the case study of Samsung Electronics (SEC) can be summarized as follows. First, high-tech firms have strong incentives to integrate their R&D and manufacturing divisions spatially, because this can encourage process innovation and save substantial time for problem solving in existing production lines. Second, high-quality human resources, essential for corporate management and R&D activities, are difficult to access outside the Capital Region. Thus, uneven geographical distribution of high-quality human resources, combined with the strong need for spatial integration between R&D and mass production divisions, caused the uneven distribution of the high-tech manufacturing sector. My findings in this paper suggest that (i) non-Capital-Region economies will be able to attract high-tech manufacturing jobs only after creating a sizable local pool of national talent, and (ii) people-targeting regional policies can be more effective than firm-targeting policies in creating the dynamics for interregional convergence.

        The Effect of Peer Teaching in Korean Language Education

        This paper discusses the impact of peer teaching in Korean language education, done through putting students at the centre of the teaching and learning process. In this peer teaching project, undergraduate students learning Korean as part of their degree course at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) participated in different types of peer teaching sessions. ‘Tutor’ students taught Korean to their ‘tutee’ students in their own ways using their own teaching materials, and the entire process of peer teaching and its benefits were explored through observation, interviews and survey methods. The findings show that tutor students led their own teaching sessions as active and independent leaders taking considerable responsibilities, and such peer interactions had a positive impact on teaching and learning for both tutor and tutee students, showing increased confidence, motivation, comfort, participation, knowledge and skills shared and developed together. This peer teaching project conducted in a student-centred environment sheds light on empowering students to be autonomous learners in Korean language education.

        Spatio-temporal boundary effects on pollution-health costs estimation: the case of PM2.5 pollution in Hong Kong

        In this study, we estimate PM2.5-caused health costs in Hong Kong and examine spatio-temporal boundary effects on the estimated results. During the period between 2012 and 2016, mean annual welfare loss from PM2.5 pollution is estimated to be US$1.5–1.8 billion or 0.5%–0.7% of Hong Kong’s gross domestic product. Premature deaths associated with chronic exposure are the most important health endpoint, accounting for >95% of the total costs. The estimated results are subject to large spatio-temporal boundary effects. On the one hand, disregarding cross-district heterogeneity in air quality and socioeconomic conditions leads to a downward bias of up to 13%, due to spatial correlations among PM2.5 levels, district population, and household incomes. On the other hand, neglecting intra-year variations in PM2.5 concentrations results in overestimation of up to 18%, due to nonlinearity in concentration–response relationships. The estimation bias from coarse analysis units likely further increases in national or global studies, given the magnitude of the spatio-temporal variations involved at these levels.

        학업우수 남자고등학생의 진로결정경험에 관한 질적 연구

        The purpose of this study was to examine how academically talented male high school students think about career and what they experience in the course of choosing their career. We interviewed 12 academically talented male high school juniors at special purpose schools and general schools. The interview was done with semi-structured questionnaire and we used CQR(Consensual Qualitative Research) to analyze the interview results. As a result, 11 categories 2 domains in ‘The meaning of career’ and 25 catergories 8 domains in ‘The experiences in their decision making process’ were induced. 2 domains in ‘The meaning of career’ were ‘Concept of career’ and ‘Considered Factor when deciding their career’. 8 domains in ‘The experiences in their decision making process’ were ‘When to collect information and decide about career,’ ‘How to get information about career’, ‘Relations between academical ability and career decision-making’, ‘Relations between sex and career decision-making’, ‘the motivating force for their career’, ‘How they interact with their parents’, ‘Special incidents that paved the way for career decision-making’. ‘Barrier in their career decision-making’. The finding of this study discussed its implication for the experience of academically talented male high school students in their career decision-making process and provided suggestions for future research.

        건강매점 운영에 따른 청소년의 간식 섭취에 대한 인식 및 간식 구매 행태

        Adolescence is the most important period of healthy development. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the food recognition, snack preference, and dietary behavior of 1st grade of middle and high school boys and girls. Subjects were 5,554 students from 16 schools with healthy tuck shop and 3,406 students from 9 schools without healthy tuck shop in Seoul, Korea. Students from schools with healthy tuck shop are significantly higher than control group for facility satisfaction and hygiene satisfaction (all p<0.05). For fruit, the preference (p<0.05) and recognition (attitude, p<0.001: intention, p<0.05: eating habit, p<0.001: social-environment, p<0.001: self-efficacy, p<0.001) of students in schools with healthy tuck shop are significantly higher than those in schools without healthy tuck shop. For the habit of checking the manufacturer, students in schools with healthy tuck shop were significantly higher than students in schools without healthy tuck shop (p<0.05). The result suggested that we have to create an environment in which fruits can be purchased easily at a tuck shop and to educate adolescents for the importance of healthy food purchasing behavior. In conclusion, healthy school tuck shop had a positive effect on accessibility to healthy food.

        복층터널의 분기터널 굴착에 따른 지하 공동구의 안정성 분석

        서울시는 도심지 교통체증을 해결하기 위해 최근 경부고속도로의 일부 구간을 복층터널로 계획하는 방안을 검토하고 있다. 도심지에 복층터널을 건설할 경우, 교통난 해소뿐만 아니라 말레이시아 스마트 터널과 같이 홍수 시 침수방지를 위한 저류시설로도 활용할 수 있을 것으로 본다. 그러나 도로터널을 복층터널로 계획할 경우에는 각 지역을 연결하는 분기터널이 필요하며, 분기터널은 토피가 낮은 구간에 편평율이 큰 대단면 또는 복잡한 터널 단면형상으로 이루어지게 된다. 이때 토피가 낮은 지역에서는 지하 공동구나 건물 기초 등에 인접하여 위치하게 되며 터널 건설로 인해 지장물에 미치는 영향에 대해 반드시 검토해야 한다. 본 연구에서는 복층터널에서 분기되는 터널 굴착 시, 지하 공동구에 미치는 영향을 수치해석을 통해 분석하였다. 변위조절모델(Displacement Controlled Model)을 이용하여 터널 주변의 지반손실률을 1.0%, 3.0%, 그리고 5.0%까지 모사하였다. 복층터널에서 분기되는 각도를 $45^{\circ}$와 $36^{\circ}$로 다르게 설정하여 공동구 측면 및 하부로의 접근을 고려할 수 있도록 하였다. 그 결과, 일반적으로 분기터널이 공동구에 근접할수록 그리고 지반손실률이 클수록 변위, 각변위 그리고 안정성에 미치는 영향이 큰 것으로 타나났다. 공동구 바닥부의 침하와 공동구 부재의 안정성에는 이격거리 보다는 공동구의 하부에 근접하여 큰 변위와 부등침하를 유발할 수 있는 각도 $36^{\circ}$, 이격거리 10 m가 가장 취약한 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구를 통해 근접시공 시 구조물의 안정성 평가를 위한 각변위-거리/직경 관계를 제시하였으며, 지하 공동구 안정성에 영향을 미치는 한계 임계 지반손실률을 산정하였다. Government plans to construct a double-deck tunnel under a portion of Gyeongbu Expressway that will solve traffic problems and could also be used as a flood storage facility. Divergence tunnels connect the main tunnel to the urban areas and their construction effects on adjacent structures at shallow depth need to be analyzed. This study primarily includes the numerical analysis of construction effects of divergence tunnels on utility tunnels. The utility tunnel was analyzed for three cases of volume loss applied to the divergence tunnel and two cases of the angle between main tunnel and divergence tunnel ($36^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$). The results show that the more the volume loss was applied and the shorter the distance was between utility tunnel and divergence tunnel, the more the utility tunnel was affected in terms of induced displacements, angular displacement and stability. The worst scenario was found out to be the one where the angle between main tunnel and divergence tunnel was $36^{\circ}$ and the distance between divergence tunnel and utility tunnel was 10 m, resulting in the largest displacement and differential settlement at the bottom of the utility tunnel. A relationship between the angular displacement and the distance to diameter ratio was also established.
