        Retrieval of an Intravascular Catheter Tip Fracture in a Dog

        An intravenous foreign body was retrieved from a 10-year-old Maltese. A 24 gauze of fracture intravenous (IV) catheter moved into the circulation to a Maltese (3.4 kg) dog through the upper cephalic vein. Radiography was performed to observe the fracture’s moving path, followed by fluid therapy. It was found in the upper cephalic vein, moved about 10 cm up to dorsal and near the proximal humerus. Retrieval surgery was performed successfully without complications. The catheter fracture retrieval sometimes remains a challenge because of unknown complications in veterinary medicine. This case report describes that a fracture IV catheter moved to the systemic vein was removed successfully by a surgery.

        Ecological Status Evaluation using Seaweed Community Structures of Taean Coastal Areas in Korea

        To evaluate the relative ecological quality of Taean coastal areas in terms of various seaweed community indices, seasonal samplings were taken at the Hakampo, Padori, Chaeseokpo, Mongsanpo and Bangpo shores from March 2006 to January 2007. A total of 105 species were identified; species richness ranged from 37~72 species spatially and from 65~75 species seasonally over the study period. Coarselybranched seaweeds were dominant in functional group and ESG I (ecological state group I) made up 61 species (58.10%) of the identified macroalgae. The average seaweed biomass at the five study sites was 56.63 g dry wt./m2 (range, 36.66 at Hakampo −73.89 g/m2 at Mongsanpo). Seaweeds were generally abundant in mid and low intertidal zone. Corallina pilulifera, Ulva australis, Sargassum thunbergii, Neorhodomela aculeata, and Symphyocladia latiuscula were the dominant species across all five study sites. Species diversity was between 1.24~2.30, while species evenness was between 0.40 and 0.61. The dominance index ranged from 0.43 at Padori to 0.64 at Mongsanpo. Given the community indices and shore descriptions, the five study sites were divided into two groups based on ecological quality: moderate (Chaeseokpo and Mongsanpo) and good (Hakampo, Padori and Bangpo).

        녹조 대발생종 금발대마디말(Cladophora vadorum)의 절편 생장에 온도, 조도 및 영양염 종류가 미치는 영향

        The green macroalga Cladophora vadorum bloomed along the coast at Sangrok Beach, Buan, South Korea, in September 2015. To elucidate the cause of bloom, the effects of environmental factors on the vegetative growth of adult fragments were examined. Growth experiments were carried out under different combinations of temperatures and irradiances, and with a single factor of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus). The maximal growth of C. vadorum was reported under the combination of 25°C and 100 μmol photons m<sup>-2</sup>s<sup>-1</sup>. The species grew under a wide range of N and P concentrations. The growth of C. vadorum peaked at 50 μM PO<sub>4</sub><sup>3-</sup>, 80 μM NH<sub>4</sub>+, and 100 μM NO<sub>3</sub>-.Adult fragments formed holdfasts and new branches within 3 days in culture and became adults, showing polarized growth patterns, in 2 weeks. This is the first report showing the development of numerous bladelets from a segment in Cladophora spe-cies. The present results indicate that Cladophora blooms appear under growth conditions that are favorable in terms of temperatures, irradiance, and nutrients via fragment growth patterns producing rapid holdfasts and many bladelets.

        녹조대발생종 솜대마디말(Cladophora albida)의 유주자 방출과 초기생장에 환경요인이 미치는 영향

        We examined the effects of environmental factors on zoospore release and germling growth of the green tide alga Cladophora albida under various conditions of temperature×irradiance (zoospore release), temperature×irradiance× nutrient (germling growth), and a single factor test of salinity. Zoospore release was maximized at 30℃ and 100 μmol photons m<sup>-2</sup>s<sup>-1</sup> in the temperature·irradiance experiment and at 34 psu in the salinity experiment. Maximum germling growth was observed at 25℃ with 100 μmol photons m<sup>-2</sup>s<sup>-1</sup> and PES (Provasoli`s Enriched Seawater) in the temperature·irradiance·nutrient experiment, and at 34 psu in the salinity experiment. Germlings grew faster at higher irradiances for a given temperature level, and also grew faster as salinity increased over the range of 5-34 psu. Overall, optimal environmental conditions for zoospore release were 30℃, 100 μmol photons m<sup>-2</sup>s<sup>-1</sup> and 34 psu. Maximal germling growth occurred at 25℃, 100 μmol photons m<sup>-2</sup><sup>s-1</sup>, PES, and 34 psu. C. albida blooms are most likely to occur under these optimal environmental conditions, as plentiful zoospore release and rapid germling growth lead to population growth.

        멘토링을 통한 초등과학 영재교육 담당교원의 반성적 수업실행에 대한 사례연구

        이 연구에서는 멘토링을 통해 초등과학 영재교육 담당교원의 반성적 수업 실행에 어떠한 변화가 있는지 사례연구를 통해 알아보고자 한다. 이를 위해 초등과학영재교육 담당교원 중 멘토 2 명과 멘티 2 명을 연구 참여자로 선정한 후, 멘토와 멘티를 일대일로 짝을 지워 총 9차시에 걸친 과학영재수업에 멘토링을 적용하였다. 이 과정에서 참여관찰, 심층면담, 수업지도안 등의 자료를 수집하였고, 이를 멘토링 전과 후로 구분하여 멘티의 수업실행에서의 변화를 귀납적 방법으로 분석하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 멘토링 전에 멘티는 과학영재수업에 대해 ‘실험을 하는 수업’, ‘어려운 내용을 가르치는 수업’이라고 인식하고 있었고, 과학영재수업을 준비하면서 교수·학습 자료의 부족, 과학영재학생에 대한 이해 부족으로 수업에 대한 부담감을 가지고 있었다. 그리고 멘티의 과학영재수업에 대한 실행은 교사중심으로 이루어졌고, 교과내용지식의 부족으로 인해 수업이 원활하게 진행되지 않았으며, 적절한 평가도 실시되지 않았다. 멘토링을 통한 반성적 수업실행을 통해 나타난 멘티의 수업에서의 변화는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 과학영재 수업의 목표, 다양한 수업모형, 다양한 교수ㆍ학습방법에 대한 올바른 인식을 갖게 되었다. 둘째, 과학영재수업에 대한 교수ㆍ학습자료의 선정 및 재구성이 이루어지고 과학영재학생의 특성을 바르게 이해하면서 수업준비에 대한 열의를 가졌다. 셋째, 과학영재수업이 학생중심으로 이루어졌고 교과내용지식의 확장으로 원활하게 진행되었으며 적절한 평가도 실시되었다. 이러한 결과는 멘토링이 초등과학 영재교육 담당교사들의 과학영재수업에 대한 생산적 반성을 촉진할 가능성이 있음을 시사한다고 하겠다. The purpose of this study was to investigate elementary teachers’ reflective practices while mentoring a class for gifted students. Two expert teachers participated as mentors while two novice teachers participated as mentees in this study. The mentors have been teaching science gifted students for more than six years and mentees have been teaching for less than one year. The mentors were paired with a mentee to provide the mentee instructions during nine classes over three mentoring sessions. The data collected included lesson plans of mentees’ classes, videotaped lessons of mentees, the materials in mentees’ classes, consultation meetings between mentors and mentees, interviews with the mentees, and interviews with the mentors. The consultation meetings and interviews were audio taped and then transcribed along with the videotaped lessons. After the three mentoring sessions, the mentees indicated some changes in their classes through their reflective practices. Firstly, the mentees identified the purpose of science eduction for the gifted and conducted their classes and activities according to that purpose. Furthermore, they tried to understand science-gifted children’s characteristics in the class. Secondly, the mentees have learnt diverse teaching strategies for science classes for the gifted, and applied these to their classes. Thirdly, the mentees improved the quality of their classes and increased their self-confidence in class. The results were as follows: mentoring could be provided to mentees to increase their opportunities to deeply reflecting on their classes and to improve teaching practices as they develop into teaching professionals.

        쇠미역(Costaria costata)과 미역(Undaria pinnatifida) 배우체의 생장과 성숙에 광과 온도가 미치는 영향

        We examined for differences in the growth and fertility of microscopic stages between Costaria costata and Undaria pinnatifida in crossed temperature×irradiance (12, 17, 22℃×20, 60 μmol photons m-2s-1) and daylength×irradiance (8, 12, 16, 24 h×20, 60 μmol photons m-2s-1) experimental designs. After 13 days in culture, maximum gametophyte growths of the two species were obtained under the following combinations of factors: 17℃×60 μmol photons m-2s-1 and 24 h daylength×60 μmol photons m-2s-1. C. costata gametophytes produced sporophytes about 6 days earlier than those of U. pinnatifida. Sporophyte densities were highest in the 12 h daylength×60 μmol photons m-2s-1 combina-tion after 20 days in C. costata (9.7 plants mm-2) and 26 days in U. pinnatifida (9.1 plants mm-2). However, optimal growth conditions for the microscopic sporophytes differed between species: 17℃×60 μmol photons m-2 s-1 for C. costata, 12℃×60 μmol photons m-2 s-1 for U. pinnatifida. Thus, C. costata gametophytes grew faster and produced sporophytes earlier than those of U. pinnatifida, even though the haploid gametophytes of the two species responded similarly to environmental conditions. Optimal growth temperatures for the microscopic sporophytes also differed between species.

        금융상품별 불공정한 금융거래에 대한 소비자불안 - 재무지식과 주관적 소비자역량의 영향을 중심으로

        Nowadays, consumers face various financial transactions and financial consumer problems increase drastically. This article investigated the level of anxiety of financial consumers and how the financial knowledge and subjective consumer competency affect the level of anxiety toward financial transactions in South Korea. Financial consumers’ anxiety was defined as the anxiety about perceived financial risks due to incomplete sales or unfair trades in the financial market. This study analyzed responses from 1,126 consumers aged between 20s and 50s in South Korea. According to the results, financial consumers’ anxiety levels differed according to the type of financial products. The anxiety level of Korean financial consumers was highest toward stocks and funds, followed by loans, and insurances. The effects of subjective consumer competency and financial knowledge on consumer anxiety about financial transactions also differed according to financial product types. Toward the trading of credit products and insurance products, subjective consumer competency significantly lowered the consumer anxiety, but did not significantly affect consumer anxiety toward transactions of other types of financial products. And financial knowledge had a significant effect only on anxiety toward transactions of deposit/saving accounts. Based on the findings, this study proposed that financial policies and education programs to elevate consumer competency and financial knowledge can reduce consumer anxiety in the financial market. 다양하고 복잡한 금융상품들이 출시되고 소비자들이 많은 금융거래에 직면하게 되면서 금융상품과 관련된 소비자 피해가 증가하고 있다. 본 연구는 금융기관의 불공정한 영업행위에 대하여 소비자들이 느끼고 있는 불안이 어떠한지를 고찰하고, 재무지식과 주관적 소비자역량이 불안에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위하여 1,126명의 20-50대 성인을 대상으로 온라인 설문조사를 실시하여 금융상품 유형별로 금융거래에 대한 소비자불안의 수준을 파악하고, 소비자 특징에 따라 불안 수준에 차이가 있는지를 살펴보았다. 또한 주관적 소비자역량과 재무지식이 불공정한 금융거래에 대한 소비자불안에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보았다. 연구 결과에 따르면 금융상품 중 투자성상품, 여신상품, 보험상품의 불공정한 거래에 대한 소비자불안이 높은 편이었으며, 금융상품 유형별로 불안이 높은 소비자 집단의 특성에도 차이가 있었다. 또한 주관적 소비자역량과 재무지식이 불안에 미치는 영향은 금융상품 유형별로 다르게 나타났는데, 주관적 소비자역량은 여신상품과 보험상품의 불공정한 거래에 대한 소비자불안을 유의하게 낮추는 것으로 나타났고, 재무지식은 수신상품의 불공정 거래에 대한 소비자불안을 유의하게 낮추었다. 본 연구 결과는 재무지식과 주관적 소비자역량이 불공정한 금융거래에 대한 소비자불안에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 확인하여 소비자불안을 관리할 수 있는 방안을 마련하는 데 기여하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

        녹조류 실염주말의 유주자 방출과 배아생장에 미치는 환경요인의 영향

        Effects of environmental factors on the zoospore release and germling growth of Chaetomorpha linum were examined. Zoospore release and germling growth experiments were carried out under a combination of temperatures × irradiances, and a single factor of irradiances, salinities, daylength and nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus). Zoospore release was maximal under condition of 20oC × 100 μmol photons m−2s−1 in a factorial experiment (temperatures × irradiances), at 100 μmol photons m−2s−1 in irradiance experiment and at 34 psu in salinity conditions. After 24 days in culture, germling growth was maximal at 25oC × 100 μmol photons m−2s−1 in temperatures × irradiances and at normal seawater (34 psu) in salinity. Germling growth is faster at higher irradiance under same temperature condition and it increased with increasing daylengths (8−16 h). Chaetomorpha linum grew in wide range of N and P concentrations. The growth of germling was maximal at 50 μM PO4 3− and 40 μM NH4 +. Germling growth was more effective under nitrogen addition than phosphorus addition in culture. In conclusion, optimal environmental conditions for zoospore release were 20oC, 100 μmol photons m−2s−1, and 34 psu. In addition, the optimal germling growth was observed at 25oC, 100 μmol photons m−2s−1, 34 psu, 16 h, 50 μM (PO4 3−) and 40 μM (NH4 +).

        Arabidopsis MAP3K16 and Other Salt-Inducible MAP3Ks Regulate ABA Response Redundantly

        In the Arabidopsis genome, approximately 80 MAP3Ks (mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinases) have been identified. However, only a few of them have been characterized, and the functions of most MAP3Ks are largely un-known. In this paper, we report the function of MAP3K16 and several other MAP3Ks, MAP3K14/15/17/18, whose expression is salt-inducible. We prepared MAP3K16 overexpression (OX) lines and analyzed their phenotypes. The result showed that the transgenic plants were ABA-insensitive during seed germination and cotyledon greening stage but their root growth was ABA-hypersensitive. The OX lines were more susceptible to water-deficit condition at later growth stage in soil. A MAP3K16 knockout (KO) line, on the other hand, exhibited opposite phenotypes. In similar transgenic analyses, we found that MAP3K14/15/17/18 OX and KO lines displayed similar phenotypes to those of MA3K16, suggesting the functional redundancy among them. MAP3K16 possesses in vitro kinase activity, and we carried out two-hybrid analyses to identify MAP3K16 substrates. Our results indicate that MAP3K16 interacts with MKK3 and the negative regulator of ABA response, ABR1, in yeast. Furthermore, MAP3K16 recombinant protein could phosphorylate MKK3 and ABR1, suggesting that they might be MAP3K16 substrates. Collectively, our results demonstrate that MAP3K16 and MAP3K14/15/17/18 are involved in ABA response, playing negative or positive roles depending on developmental stage and that MAP3K16 may function via MKK3 and ABR1.
