Antifungal resistance and toxicity problems of conventional fungicides highlighted the requirement of search for new safe antifungal agents. To comply with the requirement, we discovered four new non-cytotoxic lipopeptides, gageopeptides A–D, 1–4, from a marine-derived bacterium Bacillus subtilis. The structures and stereochemistry of gageopeptides were determined by NMR data analysis and chemical means. Gageopeptides exhibited significant antifungal activities against pathogenic fungi Rhizoctonia solani, Botrytis cinerea, and Colletotrichum acutatum with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 0.02–0.06 μM. In addition, these lipopeptides showed significant motility inhibition and lytic activities against zoospores of the late blight pathogen Phytophthora capsici. These compounds also showed potent antimicrobial activity against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria with MIC values of 0.04–0.08 μM. However, gageopeptides A–D did not exhibit any cytotoxicity (GI50 > 25 μM) against cancer cell lines in sulforhodamine B (SRB), 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT), and WST-1 ((4-[3–4-iodophenyl]-2-(4-nitrophenyl)-2H-5-tetrazolio)-1,3-benzene disulfonate)) assays, demonstrating that these compounds could be promising candidates for the development of non-cytotoxic antifungal agents.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Abstract

In this study, the effects of sintered microporous coating at the evaporator on the thermal performance of a two-phase closed thermosyphon (TPCT) are experimentally investigated using distilled water as a working fluid. The TPCT comprises evaporator, adiabatic, and condenser sections, which have an inner diameter of 25 mm and lengths of 300, 300, and 325 mm, respectively. Copper microparticles are sintered on the inner surface of the evaporator to form a 500-μm-thick microporous structure. Boiling and condensation heat transfer coefficients on the microporous coated TPCT are obtained at filling ratios (FRs) ranging from 0.25 to 1.0 and inclination angles ranging from 90° to 5°. The boiling heat transfer coefficient at the microporous coated evaporator is enhanced owing to an increase in the number of nucleation sites and thin film evaporation in the liquid film formed by capillary force through the porous structure, especially at a low FR. The condensation heat transfer is also affected by the microporous coated evaporator due to the increased amount of vapor generation at the low FR. The overall thermal resistance of the microporous coated TPCT is reduced by 51% at an FR of 0.35 and 30% at an FR of 0.75. The TPCT used in this study shows the best thermal performance at inclination angles between 15° and 30° and FRs between 0.2 and 0.4.

Highlights

Boiling heat transfer in the thermosyphon is enhanced on the microporous coated surface.

Condensation heat transfer performance is also affected by the microporous coating.

The overall thermal resistance is reduced up to 51% through the microporous coating.

Objective: The absence of collateral ventilation (CV) is crucial for effective bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR) with an endobronchial valve. Here, we assessed whether CT can predict the ChartisTM results. Materials and Methods: This study included 69 patients (mean age: 70.9 ± 6.6 years; 66 [95.7%] males) who had undergone CT to assess BLVR eligibility. The ChartisTM system (Pulmonox Inc.) was used to check CV. Experienced thoracic radiologists independently determined the completeness of fissures on volumetric CT images. Results: The comparison between the visual and quantitative analyses revealed that 5% defect criterion showed good agreement. The ChartisTM assessment was performed for 129 lobes; 11 (19.6%) of 56 lobes with complete fissures on CT showed positive CV, while this rate was significantly higher (40 of 49 lobes, i.e., 81.6%) for lobes with incomplete fissures. The size of the fissure defect did not affect the rate of CV. Of the patients who underwent BLVR, 22 of 24 patients (91.7%) with complete fissures and three of four patients with incomplete fissures (75%) achieved target lobe volume reduction (TLVR). Conclusion: The quantitative analysis of fissure shows that incomplete fissures increased the probability of CV on ChartisTM, while the defect size did not affect the overall rates. TLVR could be achieved even in some patients with relatively large fissure defect, if they showed negative CV on ChartisTM.

Background and Objectives: Radiofrequency ablation has recently been used for the treatment of benign thyroid nodules, with outstanding results. However, in most studies, the procedure was usually performed by a radiologist or surgeon. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation for nodules >2 cm performed by an endocrinologist with several years of experience performing fine-needle aspiration cytology. Materials and Methods: This study was a cross-sectional analysis of 111 patients who received radiofrequency ablation between April 2010 and July 2013. A total of 73 patients with 75 nodules >2 cm in diameter with at least 6 months of follow-up examinations were included. Results: The mean follow-up period was 11.5 months. The mean nodule volume decreased from 17.0±15.3 mL preoperatively to 6.0±8.5 mL postoperatively, with a mean volume reduction of 69.7%. There were no major complications, and only 1 patient (1.3%) presented with a minor complication (hemorrhaging of the thyroid parenchyma). Conclusion: Radiofrequency ablation is a safe method for reducing benign thyroid nodules, and is not associated with any major complications.

Purpose: To study the microscopic anatomic relation of capsulopalpebral fascia, orbital septum, and tarsus of the lower eyelid in Korean. Methods: Foureteen normal Korean lower eyelids from 14 formalin-fixed cadavers (mean age of 66.5 years) were harvested and studied with light microscopy after staining with hematoxylin and eosin. Dimensions of the structures and distances between them was measured by analyzing the digital photographs. Results: There was no fusion of the orbital septum and the capsulopalpebral fascia at the lower border of the tarsal plate in 10 specimens and limited fusion of these tissue in 4 specimens. The average distance from the inferior tarsal border to the first identifiable smooth muscle nuclei of the inferior tarsal muscle was 1.38 mm. The average tarsal plate thickness was 0.98 mm and the average tarsal plate height was 3.96 mm. Conclusions: The Korean lower lid anatomy differs from that of their non-Asian counter parts. Furthermore, there was a difference in tarsal plate thickness in comparison to Chinese lower lids. There was no consistent fusion between the capsulopalpebral fascia and the orbital septum. No extension of the capsulopalpebral fascia to the skin was observed.

Purpose: Ultrasound is most effective study for evaluating thyroid nodules. In this review, we discuss that sonographic findings to differentiate benign from malignant nodules and suggest recommendations for indications of fine needle aspiration biopsy and thyroid nodule management. Methods: Sonographic scans of 206 thyroid nodules in 164 patients were candidated for this study. We evaluated sonographic findings by shape, calcification, margin, and echogenicity, retrospectively. Sonographic findings that suggested malignancy included microcalcifications, a speculated margin, marked hypoechogenicity and a shape that was taller than wide. The final diagnosis of lesion as benign (n=180) or malignant (n=26) was confirmed by fine needle aspiration biopsy and follow-up (>6 months). We demonstrated the difference of the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy. Results: Of 206 thyroid nodules, 26 were malignant. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy based on our sonographic classification method were 84.6%, 73.9%, 31.9%, 97.0% and 75.2%. Conclusion: Sonography can be helpful for making the differentiation between and malignant nodules. So, when well trained surgeon find thyroid nodules on sonography, we can make correct diagnosis of malignant nodules. (Korean J Endocrine Surg 2010;10:224-228)

Summary

In vivo optogenetics provides unique, powerful capabilities in the dissection of neural circuits implicated in neuropsychiatric disorders. Conventional hardware for such studies, however, physically tethers the experimental animal to an external light source, limiting the range of possible experiments. Emerging wireless options offer important capabilities that avoid some of these limitations, but the current size, bulk, weight, and wireless area of coverage is often disadvantageous. Here, we present a simple but powerful setup based on wireless, near-field power transfer and miniaturized, thin, flexible optoelectronic implants, for complete optical control in a variety of behavioral paradigms. The devices combine subdermal magnetic coil antennas connected to microscale, injectable light-emitting diodes (LEDs), with the ability to operate at wavelengths ranging from UV to blue, green-yellow, and red. An external loop antenna allows robust, straightforward application in a multitude of behavioral apparatuses. The result is a readily mass-producible, user-friendly technology with broad potential for optogenetics applications.

Highlights

Subdermal, wireless optogenetic platform for untethered neuronal control

Thin, flexible devices for discrete spatio-temporal targeting of neural circuits

Low-cost, reliable NFC technology adaptable to most common behavioral contexts

NFC devices can be tailored for use with different wavelength opsins in vivo
