        In order to investigate the growth characteristics and yield performance oi the corn hybrid cultivated during 6 months from Mar. 1983 to Sep. the same year at fields of grass research, Dept. of Dairy Science, Jinju Agricultural & Forestry Junior Techical College. The results obtained are as follows: 1. the budding ratio was slightly low by unseasonableness of weather at the seeding day. 2. The growth of Gwang oggu hybrid was slightly superior to that of Hwang oggu at heading, tasseling and dough stage. 3. The plant length and No. leaf of Gwang oggu hybrid were superior to those of Hwang oggu by growth stage. 4. Disease resistance was generally strong, but it was necessary to control corn borer because of being well affected by it. 5. The yields of Gwang oggu hybrid and Hwang oggu are summarized as follows:

      • 農村住宅의 近代化 過程에서 본 內·外部空間 變遷에 관한 硏究

        우리 나라 농촌주택은 근대시기를 거치면서 전통형 주택에서 표준형 주택, 개량형 주택으로 변모하게 된다. 농촌주택의 평면형식이 두드러지게 변화를 보이게 되는 이유에는 1970년대 정부에서 주관한 농촌주택 근대화사업이 주도적인 역할을 하여 우리농촌의 모습을 획기적으로 변모시켰다. 따라서 본 논문은 그 과정에서 가장 큰 영향요인이었던 표준형 주택의 평면 특성을 분석하고 전통형 주택, 개량형 주택과 내 ㆍ외부공간의 특성을 비교하여 살펴보았다. 근대시기 표준주택안의 보급은 정체되었던 농촌주택의 변화계기가 되었다. 겹집화, 마루의 내부화, 현관도입, 화장실 욕실의 내부화, 입식부엌 등과 함께 새로운 연료, 재료, 공법 등을 제시하여 농촌문화를 한단계 성장시켰다. 그렇지만 표준주택안은 짧은 시간 내에 철저한 준비 없이 제안한 결과 실제 생활과는 많은 부분에서 불협화음이 발생하였고, 일관된 목표가 없어서 새로운 농촌주택의 모습을 제시하는데는 한계를 가졌다. 이와 같은 한계는 이후 개량주택에서 수정되기도 하였다. 농촌주택 근대화 과정에서 내ㆍ외부공간의 연결관계를 살펴보면, 표준주택 안은 전통주택에서 외부를 적극 끌어들였던 친환경적인 건축수법은 사라진 채 도시표준주택을 모방하여 매개공간이 내부화되면서 외부공간과 단절된 모습으로 변모하였다. 표준형 주택에서는 70년대에는 거실진입형이, 80년대에는 현관진입 형이 다수를 차지하였는데 개량형에서는 표준주택안의 진입형이 그대로 도입되지 않고, 대부분 마루근처인 전면에 현관을 위치시켜 과거 마당에서 마루로 이어지던 동선의 흐름을 지속하려는 경향과 거실 전면에 테라스, 툇마루 등을 설치하여 외부공간과 내부공간사이에 완충공간을 두려는 성향도 엿볼 수 있다. 또한 농작업과 관련된 특수성으로 인해, 신발을 신고 벗고 작업복을 갈아입는 공간 등이 설치되어 주택 내에서 주생활과 생산활동의 접점부분에 완충지대를 두어 생산활동의 동선이 침입하지 못하도록 하였다. In Korea, farmhouses were transformed from traditional to standard and to improved models over the process of national modernization. Especially, the plane scheme of farmhouses was changed so remarkably. This is attributed to the fact that the business of farmhouses' modernization implemented directly by the government around 1970s played a major role in dramatically changing appearances of this nation's forming community. Thus this researcher analyzed plane scheme characteristics of the standard model and compared the model with standard and improved models as mentioned above. The standard model proposed along with national modernization was widely prevailed and became a major clue for the transformation of farmhouses whose fashions had been almost unchanged. The model also advanced farm culture by subsequently suggesting built-in floor, restroom and kitchen, the introduction of the entrance and the use of new fuels or materials. Nevertheless the proposed model had many inconsistencies with daily rural life because it was applied hurriedly without full preparations. Further, the model had no clear objectives, so it could not avoid some limitations in providing a real new model of farm housing. The standard model excluded a traditional, environmental-friendly construction with external spaces used positively, and instead internalized housing facilities by imitating urban standard houses. resulting in disconnection with the spaces.

        The effect of diverse metal oxides in graphene composites on the adsorption isotherm of gaseous benzene

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The effective removal technique is necessary for the real world treatment of a hazardous pollutant (e.g., gaseous benzene). In an effort to develop such technique, the adsorption efficiency of benzene in a nitrogen stream (5 Pa (50 ppm) at 50 mL atm min<SUP>−1</SUP> flow rate and 298 K) was assessed against 10 different metal oxide/GO composite materials (i.e., 1: graphene oxide Co (GO-Co (OH)<SUB>2</SUB>), 2: graphene oxide Cu (GO-Cu(OH)<SUB>2</SUB>), 3: graphene oxide Mn (GO-MnO), 4: graphene oxide Ni (GO-Ni(OH)<SUB>2</SUB>), 5: graphene oxide Sn (GO-SnO<SUB>2</SUB>), 6: reduced graphene oxide Co (rGO-Co(OH)<SUB>2</SUB>), 7: reduced graphene oxide Cu (rGO-Cu(OH)<SUB>2</SUB>), 8: reduced graphene oxide Mn (rGO-MnO), 9: reduced graphene oxide Ni (rGO-Ni(OH)<SUB>2</SUB>), and 10: reduced graphene oxide Sn (rGO-SnO<SUB>2</SUB>)) in reference to their pristine forms of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The highest adsorption capacities (at 100% breakthrough) were observed as ~23 mg g<SUP>−1</SUP> for both GO-Ni(OH)<SUB>2</SUB> and rGO-SnO<SUB>2</SUB>, followed by GO (~19.1 mg g<SUP>−1</SUP>) and GO-Co(OH)<SUB>2</SUB> (~18.8 mg g<SUP>−1</SUP>). Therefore, the GO-Ni(OH)<SUB>2</SUB> and rGO-SnO<SUB>2</SUB> composites exhibited considerably high capacities to treat streams containing >5 Pa of benzene. However, the lowest adsorption capacity was found for GO-MnO (0.05 mg g<SUP>−1</SUP>). Alternately, if expressed in terms of the 10% breakthrough volume (BTV), the five aforementioned materials showed values of 0.50, 0.46, 0.40, 0.44, and 0.39 L g<SUP>−1</SUP>, respectively. The experimental data of target sorbents were fitted to linearized Langmuir, Freundlich, Elovich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. Accordingly, the non-linear Langmuir isotherm model revealed the presence of two or more distinct sorption profiles for several of the tested sorbents. Most of the sorbents showed type-III isotherm profiles where the sorption capacity proportional to the loaded volume.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The diverse forms of graphene-based composite with metal oxides were synthesized. </LI> <LI> The adsorption performance of these composites has been evaluated against benzene. </LI> <LI> Empirical isotherm models were employed to interpret the role of metal oxides in the adsorption. </LI> <LI> The possible mechanisms were explained by performance metrics over varying pressure regions. </LI> </UL> </P>

        한국어판 예일 틱 증상 평가척도 : 신뢰도 및 타당도 연구

        목 적 : 틱 증상의 심한 정도를 평가하기 위한 도구인 예일 틱 증상 평가척도(Yale Global Tic Severity Scale)를 한국판 가정 평가용 설문지 및 임상 평가용 척도로 개발하기 위하여 본 연구를 시행하였다. 방 법 : 예일 틱 증상 평가척도는 뚜렛 장애 및 기타 틱 장애에서 나타나는 운동틱과 음성틱 각각의 증상의 수, 빈도, 심한 정도, 복합성, 방해 정도 및 장해도를 포괄적으로 평가하도록 고안되어져 있다. 틱 증상을 주소로 정신과외래를 방문한 만 4.3세에서 19세까지의 100명의 환아 및 부모들을 대상으로 한국어로 번역한 예일 틱 증상 평가척도의 가정평가용 설문지를 평가전에 완료하도록 한 후, 면담을 통한 임상평가용 척도를 실시하였으며 수렴타당도 및 변별타당도의 검증을 위해 총괄적인 임상 인상척도-뚜렛 증후군, 강박장애, 주의력결립/과잉운동장애(Clinical Global Impression-TS, OCD, ADHD)를 시행하였다. 결 과 : 자료분석결과 내적일치도, 수렴타당도, 변별타당도 및 검사자간 신뢰도 모두 매우 높게 나타났으며 요인분석상 전 항목척도와 장해도는 운동틱과 음성틱에 해당하는 2개의 요인으로 묶여졌다. 결 론 : 본 연구결과 한국판 예일 틱 증상 평가척도의 높은 타당도 및 신뢰도가 입증되었으며 이는 향후 틱 증상의 객관적인 평가 및 정량화를 위해 유용하게 사용되어질 수 있을 것이다. Objectives : This study was carried out to develop the Korean form of Yale Global Tic Severity Scale(YGTSS)-family & clinical rating version. The severity of motor and phonic tics was rated according to five separate dimensions : number, frequency, intensity, complexity, and interference. Methods : The Korean form of YGTSS was applied to 100 children who visited psychiatric outpatient clinic with chief complaints of tic symptom. Together with YGTSS, Clinical Global Impression for Tourette's syndrome(CGI-TS), Obsessive-Compulsive disorder(CGI-OCD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder(CGI-ADHD) were administered to all subjects for examining convergent and discriminant validities. Results : We could confirm high internal consistency, convergent and discriminant validities and interrater reliability of YGTSS by analysing data from 100 children with tic disorder. In factor analysis, items were clustered to 2 factors which were identical to motor and phonic tic subscales. Conclusion : The results of this study indicate the Korean form of YGSS is a reliable and valid rating scale for rating tic symptom severity. It can be used to evaluate tic symptom objectively and to quantify the tic severity in the studies for tic disorder.

        Mutation Burden and I Index for Detection of Microsatellite Instability in Colorectal Cancer by Targeted Next-Generation Sequencing

        <P>Next-generation sequencing (NGS) panels are widely used for defining tumor mutation profiles and determining treatment approaches. We performed targeted NGS with 382 colorectal cancer genes with known microsatellite instability (MSI). After exclusion of germline alterations, the load of somatic mutations and small insertion/deletion (indel) alterations were determined. In the test set, 79 patients with 41 microsatellite-stable (MSS) and 38 MSI tumors were included. There were 120 MSS and eight MSI-high tumors in the validation set. The number of somatic mutations of whole samples were distinguished into three groups: mutant functional polymerase epsilon catalytic subunit, MSI, and MSS tumors. The median numbers of somatic and indel mutations in MSI tumors were higher. The indel mutation to whole mutation ratio (I index) was higher in MSI tumors. Hypermutation and low I index of polymerase epsilon catalytic subunit mutant tumors, a somatic mutation load cut-off of ≥40, and an I index of ≥9% were selected as the criteria for detecting MSI tumors with high sensitivity and specificity. With the analysis of alteration patterns of homopolymer genes, a higher median number of homopolymer mutations in MSI tumors was observed. Mutated homopolymer ≥5 was selected as the criterion for detecting MSI tumors. MSI in colorectal cancer can be detected by targeted NGS panels with high sensitivity and specificity using somatic mutation load and I index.</P>

        IL-6 induction of TLR-4 gene expression via STAT3 has an effect on insulin resistance in human skeletal muscle.

        <P>We investigated the cytokines and mechanisms involved in the induction of insulin resistance in human skeletal muscle. Ten subjects with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and 10 control subjects were recruited. We performed biopsies on the vastus lateralis muscle and used immunoblotting to determine levels of inflammatory cytokines, Toll-like receptor (TLR) gene expression, and insulin signaling. We also used a human myotube culture system to examine the mechanisms underlying TLR-4 gene expression. To identify inflammatory cytokines associated with insulin resistance, we measured the levels of IL-6, TNF-α, TLR-2, and TLR-4 in skeletal muscle from non-obese patients with IGT and control subjects. Levels of IL-6, TNF-α, and TLR-4, but not TLR-2, were significantly increased in the IGT group. Insulin resistance decreased significantly in HSMMs following long-term IL-6 treatment. TLR-4 gene expression was significantly increased in human skeletal muscle myoblasts (HSMMs) treated with IL-6. To determine the main signaling pathway for IL-6-induced TLR-4 gene expression, we examined several signaling factors associated with IL-6 signaling pathways. We found that the active form of 'signal transducer and activator of transcription 3' (STAT3) was increased. 'Stattic' (a STAT3 inhibitor) markedly inhibited TLR-4 gene expression. IL-6 induction of TLR-4 gene expression via STAT3 is one of the main mechanisms underlying insulin resistance in human skeletal muscle.</P>

      • High power-pulsed Nd:YAG laser as a new stimulus to induce BMP-2 expression in MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts

        <B>Background and Objective</B><P>High-power laser has recently become a physical stimulus for bone regeneration. Little is known about how high-power laser irradiation affects osteoblast differentiation. This study investigated osteoblast responses to high-power laser and combined irradiation with BMP-2 treatment.</P><B>Study Design/Materials and Methods</B><P>MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts were exposed to laser irradiation, 100 ng/ml BMP-2 or both. Cells were irradiated with a Q-switched, pulsed neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser, with a 1,064 nm wavelength and 0.75 W output power under 1.5, 3, or 5 J/cm<SUP>2</SUP> energy densities. Cell proliferation was evaluated using tetrazolium salt, WST-8. To determine the effect of these treatments on in vitro osteogenesis, we examined alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, mineral deposition, and expression of genes associated with osteogenesis. Quantitative real time PCR or ELISA was used to examine cytokine expression. In each experiment, either non-irradiated or BMP-2 (100 ng/ml)-treated cells were used as controls.</P><B>Results</B><P>High-power, low-level, Nd:YAG laser irradiation significantly increased ALP activity, when combined with BMP-2 or not. Cell proliferation declined in the irradiation and combined irradiation/BMP-2 groups. Interestingly, Nd:YAG laser stimulation resulted in significant induction of endogenous BMP-2 protein and gene expression. The increased expression of upstream regulators cbfa1 by Nd:YAG laser alone was comparable to exogenous BMP-2 treatment (100 ng/ml). Combined laser/BMP-2 treatment was synergistic in the expression of some genes (IGF-1, cbfa1) and ALP activity, compared to both BMP-2 treatment and laser irradiation alone. In vitro matrix mineralization was significantly accelerated by laser stimulation compared to that of the control, more so than with the combined laser/BMP-2 treatment.</P><B>Conclusions</B><P>The present in vitro findings demonstrate that high-power, low-level Nd:YAG laser increased osteoblast activity, very efficiently accelerating mineral deposition.         Assessment of Heavy Metal Concentrations in the Arable Soils near Industrial Complexes in Gangwon, Chungnam, Jeonnam, and Gyeongnam Provinces of South Korea

        Heavy metal (HM) pollution in agricultural lands and waters, which is rapidly increasing due to social and industrial activities, such as mining and smelting. Moreover, HM contamination causes serious environmental problems and adversely influences on the safety of agricultural production. This study established the concentrations of HM on the arable lands near industrial complexes in Gangwon (GW), Chungnam (CN), Jeonnam (JN), and Gyeongnam (GN) in South Korea. Soil samples were collected and established from 600 sites of agricultural lands nearby 60 industrial complexes in the selected provinces. Eight HMs (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cr, As and Zn) were analyzed to compare degrees of the HM pollution using standard analytical methods. The average total concentration of all HMs from samples of the analyzed soils did not exceed the warning criteria as suggested by the Soil Environmental Conservation Law of Korea. The concentration of Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, As and Hg were mostly distributed below one half concentration of warning criteria, except for the Cr and Hg. Particularly, 99.2% of Hg concentrations among the assessed samples distributed below one-twentieth values of the warning criteria. Contamination degree (Cd) of GW and GN provinces were moderate degree, CN and JN province were low degree contamination. Four provinces were classified as “uncontaminated” by PI(Pollution index).

        Fine Structure Effect of PdCo electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction Activity: Based on X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy Studies with Synchrotron Beam

        In this study, we have demonstrated the fine structure effect of PdCo electrocatalyst on oxygen reduction reaction activity with different alloy composition and heat-treatment time. In order to identify the intrinsic factors for the electrocatalytic activity, various X-ray analyses were used, including inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometer, and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy technique. In particular, extended X-ray absorption fine structure was employed to extract the structural parameters required for understanding the atomic distribution and alloying extent, and to identify the corresponding simulated structures by using FEFF8 code and IFEFFIT software. The electrocatalytic activity of PdCo alloy nanoparticles for the oxygen reduction reaction was evaluated by using rotating disk electrode technique and correlated to the change in structural parameters. We have found that Pd-rich surface was formed on the Co core with increasing heating time over 5 hours. Such core shell structure of PdCo/C showed that a superior oxygen reduction reaction activity than pure Pd/C or alloy phase of PdCo/C electrocatalysts, because the adsorption energy of adsorbates was apparently reduced by lowering the dband center of the Pd skin due to a combination of the compressive strain effect and ligand effect.
