        Korean English Teacher's Disempowerment in English-only Classes

The Sociolinguistic journal of Korea 18(1). In this case study, we have focused on the disempowerment of a Korean English teacher (KET) in English-only classrooms. Six English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms in a Korean high school were observed and analyzed by using interpretive discourse analysis. Out of the six classes, three representative classrooms were both video- and audio-taped. The results show that the English-only classes could weaken the KETs' power via three mechanisms: (a) calling the KETs' last name for choral greetings at the beginning of the class, (b) students' group solidarity and peer pressure between classmates, and (c) the students' excessively collaborative approach to peer assistance. It is argued that the exclusive English-only instruction disempowers the KETs' status and dismantles their vocational identity. In order to remedy the current situation, within a scaffolding supported by the eclectic use of first language where necessary for effective class management, KETs are empowered and overcome constraints imposed by the limited L2 oral competence of some non-native English teachers.

      • 일부 자동차 공장 근로자들의 職業的 特性과 社會 心理的 Stress의 相關性 硏究

        〈Objective〉 This study were carried out to study to assess the relationship between job characteristics, general characteristics, health behaviors, and psychosocial distress and suggested the preventive oriental medicine approaches in occupational health area. 〈Methods〉 We measured job characteristics(job demand, job control, jop insecurity) by The Karasek's Job Content Questionnaire, health behaviors(smoking, drinking, exercise, coffee), general characteristics at work by a self-administered questionnaire. Psycho social distress was measured by PWI(Psychosocial Well-being Index), a 18-item self- administered instrument. 370 data for research were collected through the process of oriental health examination with questionnaire in workplace. Statistical analysis was done by t test, oneway ANOVA, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis with SPSSWIN (version 10.0) 〈Results〉 Among the 152 respondents, the prevalence of high job strain was 27%(41 persons). The Odds ratio of high job strain was 3.11(95 2.12~4.11), and those of passive group and active group were 2.01(95 0.83~2.76) and 1.80(95 0.83~2.76), respectively. Our results supported the association between psychosocial distress and job strain. 〈Conclusion〉 The odds ratio of high strain isolated group(high strain group+low social support) was 3.59(95 2.05 5.13), but the odds ratio of high strain collective group was 1.32(95 0.23 2.41). Social support at work was modifing factor of the association between psycho social distress and job strain. Therefore we reviewed the evidence that economic depression was associated with psycho social distress in this study, and that the strength of the social support was important in maintain health.

        역전파 신경회로망을 이용한 가공조건에 따른 STD-11 절단면의 신뢰성 평가

        The purpose of this study was to present the method to choose the optimum machining condition for the wire EDM. This was completed by examining the ever-changing quality of the material and by improving the function of the wire electric discharge machine. Precision metal mold products and the unmanned wire electric discharge machining system were used and then applied in industrial fields. This experiment uses the wire electric discharge machine with brass wire electrode of 0.25mm. To measure the precision of the machining surface, average values are obtained from 3 samples of measures of center-line average roughness by using a third dimension gauge and a stylus surface roughness gauge.

      • 신경교세포 및 RAW 264.7 세포에서 Protein kinase의 활성에 의한 유도성 Nitric oxide synthase의 발현

        NO(nitric oxide) plays an important role as neurotransmitter or cytokine, and pathologic factor for some diseases by the large amount production with iNOS(inducible NO synthase) expression in macrophages or glial cells. The expression of iNOS is regulated by various cytokines, protein kinases and transcription factors. In this experiment, to investigate the roles of progein kinase and NF-kB for iNOS expression, the effects of PMA(phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate), cAMP, and various protein kinase inhibitors on LPS(lipopolysaccharide)-induced iNOS mRNAN expression and nuclear NF-kB binding complex were examined in C6 glial cells and RAW 264.7 cells. In C6 glial cells, iNOS mRNA expression by LPS was induced from 1 hour and peak at 3 hour after treatment. In RAW 264.7 cells, the mRNA was observed from 3 hour and peak at 6 hour. PMA enhanced markedly LPS-induced iNOS mRNA expression and NF-kB binding complex in C6 glial cells, but did not much influence on LPS-induced iNOS mRNA expression in RAW 264.7 cells, in spite of increased LPS-induced NF-kB binding complex at 30 min. cAMP(dibutyryl cAMP) did not much influence on LPS-induced iNOS mRNA expression, by increased LPS-induced NF-kB binding complex in C6 glial cells. However, in RAW 264.7 cells, cAMP increased slightly LPS-induced iNOS mRNA expression without change of NF-kB binding complex. Staurosporine did not influence on LPS-induced iNOS mRNA expression and NF-kB binding complex in C6 glial cells, but in RAW 264.7 cells, decreased LPS-induced iNOS mRNA expression and NF-kB binding complex. Ro-31-8220 did not much influence on LPS-induced iNOS mRNA expression and NF-kB binding complex in C6 glial cells, but in RAW 264.7 cells, decreased significantly LPS-induced iNOS mRNA expression in spite of increased LPS-induced NF-kB binding complex for 3hours. G 6976 did not much influence on LPS-induced iNOS mRNA expression with decreased NF-kB binding complex in C6 glial cells, but in RAW 264.7 cells, decreased iNOS mRNA expression without influence on LPS-induced NF-kB binding complex. Genistein did not influence on LPS-induced iNOS mRNA expression and NF-kB binding complex in C6 glial cells, but in RAW 264.7 cells, decreased LPS-induced iNOS mRNA expression inspite of increased NF-kB binding complex. These results suggest that LPS-induced regulation of iNOS expression or NF-kB activity in C6 glial cells, might be different from RAW 264.7 cells through various protein kinases or other factors.

      • OBD에 기초한 승용차 엔진의 계통별 고장 및 진단 사례 연구

        In this study, we have performed a systematic case study on troubles and diagnoses of passenger car's engine based on OBD. We have acquired 1,242 data in order to analysis accurate troubles' causes and apposite diagnoses. 128 data of them are got using 0BD apparatus, and the others of them are collected on related website. As results, distribution of trouble cases shows had idling(32%), poor acceleration(21%), stop in running(19%), faulty start(11%), inferior fuel economy(9%), and insufficient power in order of magnitude. And in the systematic cases, it is not difficult to detect troubles in a single part. But we know that special apparatus such as multichannel scanner is needed in complicated troubles. Furthermore we think that the survey is continued in various ways for more systematic case study on troubles and diagnoses.

      • 酵母細胞의 인산대사 및 유기물 합성에 미치는 무기인산 화합물의 영향

        효모의 개체군 생장에 미치는 인산 화합물(??) 및 ??, ?? 양이온의 영향을 측정한 결과, ??는 Knopp씨 배지수준의 1배, 10배, 50배 처리의 전구간에 걸쳐서 개체군 생장에 유의한 촉진효과를 볼 수 없었다. ?? 처리구에서는, ?? 의 1배 처리구에서 대조구에 비하여 뚜렷한 생장촉진효과를 볼 수 있었으나, 10배, 50배의 처리구에서는 오히려 생장이 감소함을 나타내었다. 또한 ?? 처리구는 전 구간에 걸쳐서 대조구에 비하여 뚜렷한 억제가 관찰되었다. 한편, 효모의 인산화합물 합성에 미치는 영향을 측정하여 본 결과, ??의 경우는 산 가용성 Total-P 가 전 구간에 걸쳐 배양 처리후 6일째에, 대조구에 비하여 증가하였으며, ??처리구는 전처리구에서 산가용성 Total-P가 감소하였으나 ortho-P만은 증가하였음을 보였다. ??의 처리구에서도 Total-P는 역시 대조구에 비하여 감소하고 ortho-P는 대조구와 비슷한 경향을 보였다. poly-P "A", "B", "C", type 의 소장 관계를 측정한 결과, poly-p-A 와 B는 인산농도 및 양이온의 농도가 높을수록 많은 생성량을 나타내었으며, 특히 ?? ×50 처리구에서 poly-p-"B" 의 최대 합성량을 볼 수 있었다. 또한 여러 배양조건하에서도, 여러가지 poly-P 전환과정은 모든 시험구에서 동일한 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 특히 ?? 이온에 의해 영향받는 poly-P의 유기물합성에 이용되는 전환경로와 poly-P 상호 전환경로는 다음의 관계가 성립하는 것으로 추론된다. ?? 한편, 효모세포의 단백질, 핵산, 인지질, 탄수화물 합성에 미치는, 이들 인산 화합물의 양적 동태를 고찰한 결과, 핵산의 경우, ?? 처리구는 모든 구간에서 핵산 합성에 유의한 효과를 찾을 수 없었으며, ??처리구는 1배농도의 처리구에서는, 핵산의 합성증가를, 그외의 처리구에서는 합성량이 낮았다. ?? 처리구에서는 전체적으로 현저한 유기물의 합성억제를 나타내었다. 단백질 합성의 경우는 ??×1처리구를 제외한 모든 처리구에서 대조구와 비교하여 비슷한 경향을 나타내거나 억제효과를 보여주었을 뿐,촉진효과를 관찰할 수 없었다. 인지질 합성시 ??는 촉진효과를 나타내었으나 ?? 와 ?? 는 유의한 효과를 볼 수 없었다. 효모의 탄수화물 합성에 있어 ?? 는 대체로 대조구의 합성량과 유사하며, ?? 의 경우와 ??의 경우는 전 처리구간에서 대조구에 비하여 배양초기에 억제효과를 나타내었으나, 배양후기에는 오히려 증가되었다. 한편 poly-P와 유기물 합성과의 상관관계에서, Polysaccharide,lipid-p, DNA 합성에는 Poly-P-B가, nucleotidic-labile-P 생성에는 poly-P-C 가 상호 연관된 것으로 추정되었다. Examined the effect on the growth of yeast population by treating medium with phosphate compounds such as ??, ?? and ?? ion as the the concentration of Knopp's level, tenfold concentration and of fiftyfold, respectively, it could be recognized as the following facts; in case of ??, it showed no significant effect on the growth of yeast population in all treatmemt. And in case of ?? treatment replaced K? of KH₂PO₄in knopp's medium it showed the stimulating effect in the culture as comparing with those of control, but on the contrary, it was revealed the inhibition effect in the culture of tenfold and fifty fold treatment. However, the addition of ?? compounds showed the clear evidence of inhibition effect in population growth. Measuring the effect on the synthesis of phosphate compounds of yeast cell by treating the above chemicals, the amount of acid soluble-total phosphate was increased in all ?? teatment on 6th day after treatment. On the contraty, in case of ?? treatment, the amount of acid soluble-total phosphate was decreased in all treatment comparing with that of control, but the amount of ortho-phosphste was increased in all cultures. These similar tendencies were also found in the cultures of As?? compound treatment. The amount of acid soluble-total phosphate was decresed comparing with that of control and ortho-phosphate was as of control level. The accumulation amount of each type of polyphosphate(A,B and C) seemed to have a relationship between each other. It seemed that the amounts of polyphosphate A and B in yeast cell are increased in accordance with high cation concentration and phosphate concentration in culture medium. Especially, the culture in fiftyfold concentration of ?? ion synthesized the highest amount of polyphosphate B. However, the trun-over patterns of each polyphosphate under various conditions showed similar tendencies with each other. But the patterns utilizing in synthesis of cellular organic matter are belived to be affected by ?? ion as the direction in the following figure. ?? The synthesis of cellular organic matter, such as protein, nucleic acid, phospholipid , and polysaccharide was also belived to have a relation to cellular nutritional conditions. Any treatment of ?? showed no significant effect in synthesis of nucleic acid . The treatment of ?? compounds was resulted in decreased of nucleic acid generally, but increase in the culture replaced ?? of KH₂PO₄of Knopp's medium by ??. However, all the treatment of ??) compounds to medium showed strong inbibition effect in synthesis of nucleic acid. The synthesis of cellular protein is promoted by treating ?? compounds as Knopp's level. but in case of tenfold and fiftyfold concentration, the amount of protein is equivalent to or below to that of control. Referring to synthesis of phospholipid, ?? treatment was effective, but ?? and ?? compounds showed inbibition effect. The amount of carbohydrate in yeast cell treated by ?? is similar to those of control, however, in the cell treated by ?? or ?? compounds, the amount was increased just after decreasing in early stages of incubation. The relationship between each polyphosphate and synthesis of cellular organic matter could be interpretated that polyphosphate B is utilized mainly in synthesis of polysaccharide, phospholipid and DNA, and that polyphosphate C is also related in formation of nucleotidic labile phosphate.

      • Am-Be 선원을 통한 중성자의 전단면적 측정

        Total cross sections was measured for 6.45MeV∼8.96MeV (average 7.7MeV) neutron on ??, ??, ?? absorber using ?? fast neutron source. The 2" ø×2" NE-213 organic liquid scitillation detector was used as a spectrometer of neutrons and gamma-rays. The zero crossing time analysis method was introduced in order to obtain the pulse heigh spectrum of neutrons and n-γ pulse-shape spectrum was investigated. The ratio of neutron peak for a Vally was 1:20. The total cross section resulting from the experiment enabled us to suppose a optical model as a neutron model, obtain the radius of a nuclei.

        전산화단층사진을 이용한 타액선의 정량분석에 관한 연구

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to calculate the size and CT number of both normal parotid and submandibular gland, and evaluate their relation to sex, age and obesity using computed tomography. Materials and Methods: The computed tomography was performed parallel to the Frankfurt plane in 46 subjects with healthy salivary gland. The subjects were divided into the three groups(young, middle, old) according to their ages. The size of salivary gland was determined as maximum cross-sectional area and the CT number of salivary gland was determined as the mean CT number of three ROI's. The body mass index was calculated from weight and height. Results: The mean maximum cross-sectional area was 7.79(±1.25) ㎠ on parotid gland and 4.12(±0.83) ㎠ on submandibular gland. The mean CT number was -4.43(±23.87) HU on parotid gland and 50.01(±15.63) HU on submandibular gland. There was decreasing pattern of the maximum cross-sectional area of submandibular gland and the CT number of both parotid and submandibular gland according to age(p<0.50). As the body mass index increased, the maximum cross-sectional area of parotid gland increased and CT number of both parotid and submandibular gland decreased(p<0.05). The maximum cross-sectional area of submandibular gland in male was larger than that in female(p<0.05). As the maximum cross-sectional area and CT number of left salivary gland increased, those of right gland increased(p<0.05). Conclusion: Intra-individual differences in salivary gland size and CT number is considered in the age and individual obesity.(J Korean Oral Maxillofac Radiol 1999:29:207-219)
