Background/Aims: The bedside index of severity in acute pancreatitis (BISAP) is a new, convenient, prognostic multifactorial scoring system. As more data are needed before clinical application, we compared BISAP, the serum procalcitonin PCT), and other multifactorial scoring systems simultaneously. Methods: Fifty consecutive acute pancreatitis patients were enrolled prospectively. Blood samples were obtained at admission and after 48 hours and imaging studies were performed within 48 hours of admission. The BISAP score was compared with the serum PCT, Ranson`s score, and the acute physiology and chronic health examination (APACHE)-II, Glasgow, and Balthazar computed tomography severity index (BCTSI) scores. Acute pancreatitis was graded using the Atlanta criteria. The predictive accuracy of the scoring systems was measured using the area under the receiver-operating curve (AUC). Results: The accuracy of BISAP (≥ 2) at predicting severe acute pancreatitis was 84% and was superior to the serum PCT (≥ 3.29 ng/mL, 76%) which was similar to the APACHE-II score. The best cutoff value of BISAP was 2 (AUC, 0.873; 95% con- fidence interval, 0.770 to 0.976; p < 0.001). In logistic regression analysis, BISAP had greater statistical significance than serum PCT. Conclusions: BISAP is more accurate for predicting the severity of acute pancreatitis than the serum PCT, APACHE-II, Glasgow, and BCTSI scores.

<P>BACKGROUND: Klebsiella oxytoca C1036 (C1036) causes induced systemic resistance (ISR) activity against the soft-rot pathogen Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum SCC1 (SCC1). However, microbial metabolites from C1036 involved in ISR activity remain unknown. The present study was performed to identify an ISR-related metabolite produced by C1036.</P><P>RESULTS: The supernatants of C1036 cultures grown on Luria-Bertani medium were subjected to solvent extraction, repeated column chromatography and preparative liquid chromatography for isolation of an ISR-related metabolite. High-resolution mass spectrometer analysis of the isolated metabolite indicated a C<SUB>9</SUB>H<SUB>15</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>N compound with a mass of 185.11. Low-resolution mass spectrometer analysis of the metabolite showed a molecular ion peak at 185 and its fragment ions at 84 and 56. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer analyses characterised all protons and carbons of the isolated metabolite. Based on the data, the isolated metabolite was determined to be butyl 2-pyrrolidone-5-carboxylate (BPC). BPC at 12 mM significantly suppressed the disease symptoms in ISR bioassays against SCC1.</P><P>CONCLUSION: This is the first report identifying BPC as an ISR-related metabolite produced by C1036. C1036 may play a role in promoting plant growth because it produces ISR-related metabolites against the plant pathogen SCC1. Copyright © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry</P>

The Legal Consciousness is a feeling or attitude toward the law from the people. Most Korean had a traditional consciousness that did not consider the law so friendly, also, the perception of law is also very negative is the common result of various investigations so far. This is caused by a distrust of the political power that operates the law than just distrust of law. Moreover, it is a serious problem that these negative attitudes are getting stronger over time. Especially when looking at the situation of the monopoly of government affairs in Park Geun-hye administration, the law was not a means of realizing social justice on the side of the socially weak, it has come to the fact that the law has been recognized as a tool of oppression by the ruling group, which seizes power in a fraudulent manner and accumulates economic wealth. It was a really ridiculous incident. In addition, not all citizens need to be experts in law, but the law is a bowl for society, and filling the bowl is a moral form or value of society in general. And since society has a peculiar law, and the modern state has the rule of law as its basic principle, most human acts have a direct relationship with law. In particular, it is true that the problem of the legal consciousness of college students is frequently mentioned today. Therefore, in this study, through the examine the contents of the legal consciousness of the K university female students in Gwangju and will consider the cause of this.
Isolation and Characterization of Rice OsHRL Gene Related to Bacterial Blight Resistance

The expression of HR-like lesion inducing gene of Oryza sativa (OsHRL) was slightly increased by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) infection. Transgenic rice plants over-expressing OsHRL gene were challenged with Xoo and the development of disease symptoms were examined to investigate the effect of OsHRL gene expression on plant defense responses. The over-expression of OsHRL increased disease resistance against Xoo compared with wild type plants.

한국인의 VO_2 max 및 최대운동부하에 대한 환기반응의 참고치를 마련하기 위하여 건강한 한국인 성인 남자 420명을 여자 324명, 합계 744명에서 Bruce 법으로 중상 제한성 최대운동부하검사를 실시하여 최대운동시의 여러 지표의 성적을 성별 및 연령별로 비교 관찰하였다. 남녀에서 20대의 VO_2 max의 평균 (±표준편차)은 각각 2.18±0.290 및 1.65±0.204 L/min/M^2로서 다른 연령군에 비해 가장 많았으며, 연령을 변수로 한 VO_2 max의 희귀방정식에서 매년 남자는 14.3 ml/min/M^2, 여자는 9.0 ml/min/M^2씩 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 VO_2 max 및 V_E max도 VO_2 max처럼 남자에서 여자보다 많았고, 남녀에서 다 같이 나이가 많아짐에 따라 감소하였으나, V_E max/VCO_2 max는 다른 지표들과는 달리 성별과 연령에 따른 차이가 적었다. 한편 RR max는 성별에 따른 차이는 없었으나 연령의 증가에 따라 유의한 감소를 보였으며, V_T max는 남자에서 많았으나 남녀에서 다 같이 각 연령군 사이에는 뚜렷한 차이가 없었다. 그리고 V_T max/VC는 여자에서는 연령이 많아짐에 따라 증가하였으나, V_T max/VC 및 V_E max/ MVV의 평균은 남녀의 모든 연령군에서 각각 0.5 및 0.7 전후로서 최대 운동시에도 환기용량에는 상당한 예비가 있었다. 이런 사실로 보아 VO_2 max를 비롯하여 VCO_2 max, V_E max 및 RR max는 남녀에서 다 같이 연령 증가에 따라 감소하기는하나 건강인에서는 환기기능이 VO_2 max의 제한인자가 되지는 않음을 알 수 있다. To establish the reference values of maximal oxygen uptake (VO_2 max) and study ventilatory responses to maximal exercise loading in Koreans, the symptom-limited maximal exercise test by Bruce protocol was carried out in 744 healthy Korean adults consisting of 420 men and 324 women. The VO_2 max was the greatest in the age of 20's, the MEAN (±SD) being 2.18±0.290 L/min/M^2 and 1.65±0.204 L/min/M^2 in men and women, respectively. Regression equations for VO_2 max for men and women were 14.3 ml/min/M^2 and 9.0 ml/M^2, respectively. Both VCO_2 max and V_E max, which were greater in men, also diminished with age in both genders, but the V_E max / VCO_2 max, unlike the other ventilatory parameters, were not much different between age groups in both sexes. The RR max decreased with age but showed no significant difference between men and women. The V_T max was greater in men but not significantly different between age groups in both sexes. The mean ratios of V_T max/VC and V_E max/MVV were approximately 0.5 and 0.7, respectively, in both genders, indicating that there were considerable reserves in the ventilatory capacity even at maximal exercise. These facts indicate that VO_2, VCO_2, V_E and RR at maximal exercise decrease with age, and also reconfirm that ventilatory function does not limit VO_2 max in healthy adults in all age groups.

종래 판례는 조사 경찰관의 증언에 대해 증거능력을 인정할 경우 사법경찰관 작성 피의자신문 조서에 대해 피고인이 법정에서 내용을 부인할 경우 증거능력을 인정하지 않는 취지에 반한다는 이유로 조사자의 법정증언을 인정하지 않았다. 그러나 개정 형사소송법은 조사자 증언 제도를 도입함으로써 피의자를 조사하였던 경찰관이 수사 당시 들었던 피의자의 진술을 법정에서 증언하는 것을 인정하였다. 조사자 증언제도를 통하여 검찰의 이중조사로 인한 국민의 불편을 해소하고, 조사경찰관은 위증이나 허위공문서 작성 등의 시비를 염두에 두고 수사에 임하게 되어 수사의 투명성 제고와 적법절차 준수에 기여할 것으로 보인다. 이에는 수사과정의 적법성과 조사경찰관의 정확한 기억 등이 뒷받침 되어야 할 것으로 검사와의 사전면담, 영상녹화 등을 적극 활용하여 부정확한 기억이나 허위진술의 여지를 없애고 수사과정의 투명성을 확보하여야 할 것이다. Korean Courts have not granted examiners such as police officers to testify before the Courts. The rational was based on an analogical theory that the admissibility of police officer's report is not recognized if the defendant disputes the statement of the report. The Amended Criminal Procedure Law, however, adopted a different position. Now it is possible for a police officer to testify at trial regarding statements of defendants if the statements were based on his own perception during his investigation. It is expected that defendants will no longer suffer from redundant investigation from prosecution and police officers will have to concern themselves with his perjury or forgery during the process of investigation. I believe all of these changes will contribute to the transparency of investigation and the Due Process of Law. Of course, for these goals, it should be guaranteed that the police officer's statement is in accordance with all fact relations by taking advantage of video-recording or pre-interview with prosecutor thereby removing any chances of vague statements or misrepresentations.

A novel low NOx oil burner of 0.7 MW (for a 1 ton steam/hr industrial boiler) was designed and tested to investigate the combustion characteristics through in-flame measurement and flue gas analysis. Flame shape was observed by CCD camera and CH<SUP>*</SUP>/C₂<SUP>*</SUP> radical distribution in the flame were observed, along with measurement of flue gas composition such as NOx and CO, for various heat inputs, excess airs and pressure of the fuel spary nozzles. The flame showed the two-zone structure: fuel-rich and fuel-lean zone, which was very favorable for the low-NOx combustion, and the NOx emission for haevy oil combustion was significantly reduced to < 150 ppm at 4 % O₂, compared with the NOx level of a conventional heavy oil burner.
