        The subjects in this study were 72 patients hemodialysis of three general hospitals located in Kwang-ju y and the data were collected from january 15th to April 15th, 1988. This study was designed to identify the correlation between the stress and the inteUectual abilities self-care and the practice of self-care of the patients on hemodialysis for the purpose of providing ta base for effective Nursing intervention for them. The instruments used for this study were "The stress scale" designed by Chun and "The scale of actice of self care in patients on hemodialysis" designed by Kim. The data were analysed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The results of analysis were as follows. Hypothesis 1) "There would be some correlations between the level of intellectual abilities of self-care and the level of perceived stress", was not supported. Hypothesis 2) "The higher the level of stress in patients on hemodialysis, the higher the level of their practice of self-care", was supported (r=0.7860, P<0.05). Hypothesis 3) "The higher the level of intellectual abilities of self-care, the higher the level of accomplishment abilities of self-care", was supported (r=0.7489, P<0.05).

      • 상황버섯(Phellinus linteus)으로부터 Ergosterol의 분리

        상황버섯을 80% MeOH 용액으로 추출하고, 추출물을 EtOAc, n-BuOH 및 물로 분배, 추출하였다. 이 중 EtOAc 분획을 silica gel 및 octadecylsilica gel(ODS) column chromatography로 정제하여 1종의 sterol 화합물을 분리하였다. 화합물의 화학구조는 NMR, MS 및 IR 등의 스펙트럼 데이터를 해석하여, ergosta-7,22E-diene-3β,5α,6β-triol(cerevisterol, 1)로 동정하였다. 이 화합물은 상황버섯에서 처음 분리 보고 되었다. Phellinus linteus was extracted with 80% aqueous MeOH, and the concentrated extract was partitioned with EtOAc, n-BuOH and H_(2)O. The repeated silica gel and ODS column chromatographies of the EtOAc fraction led to the isolation of one sterol. From the result of spectral data including NMR, MS and IR, the chemical structure of the sterol was determined as ergosta-7,22E-diene-3β,5α,6β-triol (cerevisterol, 1). Compound 1 was isolated from the Phellinus linteus for the first time in this study.

        Enterococcus faecium FC-K Derived from Kimchi Is a Probiotic Strain That Shows Anti-Allergic Activity

        A rise in the occurrence of allergic diseases is attributed to the dysregulated balance of type 1/type 2 immunity, where type 2 T-helper (Th2) cells predominate over type 1 T-helper (Th1) cells, leading to an abnormally increased production of IgE in response to unharmful antigens. Kimchi, a traditional Korean fermented food, is a rich source of beneficial lactic acid bacteria. In this study, we investigated the ability of Enterococcus faecium FC-K derived from kimchi to induce type I immunity in the presence of Th2 polarizing conditions in vitro and in vivo. Stimulation of mouse peritoneal macrophages with E. faecium FC-K induced the production of tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-12. Under the in vitro Th2 conditions in which splenic T cells were activated in the presence of IL-4, E. faecium FC-K enhanced the ability of T cells to produce interferon (IFN)-γ. Using the ovalbumin (OVA)-induced allergy model, male BALB/c mice receiving E. faecium FC-K reduced the serum level of total IgE, but not that of OVA-specific IgE. Furthermore, the population of activated splenic B cells during OVA immunization was decreased in E. faecium FC-K-treated mice, accounting for a reduction of total IgE in the serum. Restimulating splenocytes from OVA-immunized mice with OVA ex vivo resulted in an increased production of IFN-γ, with no effect on IL-4, in E. faecium FC-Ktreated mice. These observations provide the evidence that E. faecium FC-K can be a beneficial probiotic strain that can modulate the Th2-mediated pathologic response.

        Calibration of a Five-Hole Multi-Function Probe for Helicopter Air Data Sensors

        In the flight of air vehicles, accurate air data information is required to control them effectively. Especially, helicopters are often put in drastic motion involved with high angle of attacks in order to perform difficult missions. Among various sensors, the multi function probe (MFP) has been used in the present study mainly owing to its advantages in structural simplicity and capability of providing various information such as static and total pressure, speed, and pitch and yaw angles. In this study, a five-hole multi-function probe (FHMFP) is developed and its calibration is conducted using multiple regressions. In this work a calibration study on the FHMFP, an air data sensor for helicopters, is reported. It is shown that the pitch and yaw angles' accuracy of calibration is ${\pm}0.91^{\circ}$ at a cone angle of $0^{\circ}{\sim}30^{\circ}$ and ${\pm}2.0^{\circ}$ at $30^{\circ}{\sim}43^{\circ}$, respectively, which is summarized in table 3.

      • Improved Prediction of the Pathologic Stage of Patient With Prostate Cancer Using the CART–PSO Optimization Analysis in the Korean Population

        <P><B>Objective:</B></P><P>In current practice, medical experts use the pathological stage predictions provided in the Partin tables to support their decisions. Hence, the Partin tables are based on logistic regression built from the US data. In the present study, we developed a data-mining model to predict the pathologic stage of prostate cancer. In this newly developed model, using the classification and regression tree-particle swarm optimization analysis of the Korean population data, we aim to improve the prediction accuracy of the pathologic state of prostate cancer.</P><P><B>Method:</B></P><P>A total of 467 patients from the smart prostate cancer database were evaluated. The results were intended to predict the pathologic stage of prostate cancer: organ-confined disease and non–organ-confined disease. The accuracy of 4 classification and regression tree-particle swarm optimization models was compared; furthermore, the models were validated with the Partin tables using the receiver operating characteristic curve.</P><P><B>Results:</B></P><P>Among the 467 evaluated patients, 235 patients had organ-confined disease and 232 patients had non–organ-confined disease. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the proposed classification and regression tree-particle swarm optimization model (0.858 ± 0.034) was larger than the 1 in the Partin tables (0.666 ± 0.046).</P><P><B>Conclusion:</B></P><P>The proposed classification and regression tree-particle swarm optimization model was superior to the Partin tables in terms of predicting the risk of prostate cancer. Compared to the validation of the Partin tables for the Korean population, the classification and regression tree-particle swarm optimization model resulted in a larger receiver operating characteristic curve and a more accurate prediction of the pathologic stage of prostate cancer in the Korean population.</P>

        만성 혈액투석환자에서 유병과 사망에 기여하는 인자

        N/A Objectives: Several factors have been raised as contributing to morbidity and mortality among patients with end-stage renal disease treated with hemodialysis. We performed this study to evaluate morbidity and the factors contributing to them in chronic hemodialysis patients. Methods. We analyzed retrospectively the demo- graphic chracteristics, regularly tested laboratory findings (CBC, blood chemistry, chest X-ray, ECG), hospitalization rate, and gross mortality among 84patients in the Hallym University Medical Center from February I, 1992 to January 31, 1994. Results: 1) Age distribution of the patients was 54±13(mean±SD) years (range, 23-79 years); 41 patients were men, 43patients were women: 30patients(35.7%) had diabetes. The duration of hemodialysis was 33±30 months (range, 3-125 months). 2) Forty four patieints(52.4%) required hospitalization during the 2-year follow-up period, and the most common causes of hospitalization were infection and cardiovascular disease. 3) A total of 1H(21.4%) of the patients died the 2-year follow-up period, and cardiovascular disease was commonest cause of death. 4) The factors such as advancing age, the duration of hemodialysis, and diabetes were neither associated with the risk hospitalization nor with that of death. The serum albumin concentration in dead patients(3.4±0.4g/d1) was lower(p<0.001) than that in survived patients(3.8±0.4g/dL). As compared with patients who had serum albumin concentration ≥3.5g/dL, patients with serum albumin concentration <3.5g/dL had increased odds ratio(8.14) for death. The serum creatinine concentration in dead patients (9.5+3.0g/dL) was lower(p<0.%! than that in survived patients(11.8±3.1g/dL). Conclusion: We concluded that regularly tested serum albumin concentration was the most important predictive factor for death in chronic hemodialysis patients.

        N/A Objectives : Diabetic autonomic neuropathy is a common complication of long standing diabetes mellitus and is well known to induce the motor dysfunction of cardiovascular system, genitourinary system and digestive system. Although many studies have done to evaluate the diabetic autonomic neuropathy, gallbladder motor function and biliary dynamic study to evaluate the change of gallbladder function in diabetic patients is relatively rare. This study was performed to measure the gallbladder ejection fraction using Tc- 99m-DISIDA with fatty meal in order to evaluate the gallbladder motor function in diabetic patients and to examine the usefulness of it in analyzing diabetic autonomic neuropathy. Methods : 51 diabetic patients(males 31, females 18, mean age 57yr(36-77yr)) and 1H control subjects(males 14, females 4, mean aged 47yr(31-70yr)) without gallstone and impaired liver function were enrolled in our study. Also the diabetic patients were categorized by age, disease duration, body weight and diabetic complications such as retinopathy, peripheral neuropathy and cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy accompanying with or not. Results : 1) Median value and interquartile range of gallbladder ejection fraction(%) were 66%(48-79%) in diabetic patients group and 75%(64-80%) in control subjects. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups, but the mean value of diabetic patients was slightly lower than that of control subjects. 2) There was no significant difference between the two groups in mean value of gallbladder ejection fraction in every age group(P>0.05). 3) Median value of gallbladder ejection fraction in diabetic groups with less than 10 years of duration (both under 5 years and 5 to 10 years groups) was similar to that of control subjects. However in patients whose diabetic conditions last more than 10 years, the median range of gallbladder ejection fraction was significantly lower than that of control subjects(P<0.05). 4) Median range of gallbladder ejection fraction in obese diabetic patients group was significant lower than those of control subjects and non- obese diabetic patients(p<O.C6). 5) Median value of gallbadder was lower in diabetic patients group with complications like retinopathy, peripheral neuropathy or cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (p<0.05) in comparison with those of control subjects and diabetic patients group without diabetic complication (p>0.05). Also seven diabetic patients whose gallhladder ejection fraction was reduced under,35% have had at least two diabetic complications. Conclusion : We observed that gallbladder ejection fraction of diabetic patients was reduced compared with that of control subjects. This is due to the reduced gallbladder muscle contractility resulting from diabetic autonomic dysfunction. These results suggest that the assessment of gallbladder ejection fraction using 99m- Tc-DISIDA would be useful to diagnose diabetic autonomic neropathy.

      • Expression and Fuctional Analysis of Yeast ARS Binding Factor I Gene and Its Mutant Genes in Yeast

        ABF I is a DNA binding protein which plays roles in DNA replication and in DNA transcription. The nucleotide sequence of cloned ABF I gene revealed several motifs characteristic of DNA binding proteins. In order to locate the protein domains which are important for function of ABF I, several ABF I mutants were generated by site-directed mutagenesis and expressed in S. cerevisiae with a temperature-sensitive lethal mutation in the ABF I gene. The abf1-ts strain showed rapid growth arrest at the non-permissive temperature but showed normal growth at the non-permissive temperature when a plasmid containing ABF I gene was introduced into the yeast cells. Among several mutant ABF I genes tested, mutant ABF I gene with a base substitution corresponding to the position of 61th His to Ala or of 360th Leu to Arg did not support growth of the is mutant at the non-permissive temperature. Our results indicate that the histidine residue in the putative zinc-finger region and the leucine residue in the leucine zipper region were important for the function of the ABF I in yeast.

        Analysis of Transcriptional Activation Domains of Eukaryotic Transcription Factors Using Yeast GAL4 Fusion System

        Some of eukaryotic transcription factors are multifunctional proteins which play important roles in DNA replication as well as in transcription. Two of such proteins, yeast ARS binding factor 1(ABF 1) and rat Nuclear Factor 1-A (NF1-A), were analyzed for their abilities to activate transcription in yeast cells using yeast GAL4 fusion system. Different regions of ABF1 and NF1-A were fused with yeast GAL4 DNA binding domain and monitored for transcriptional activation abilities in yeast cells. Our studies reveal that ABF1 was incapble of activating transcription in yeast by itself, indicating that ABF1 may require some other factors for activation of transcription. In contrast, rat NF1-A was able to activate transcription in yeast, indicating that NF1-A activates transcription by direct interaction with some components of transcription machinery which were conserved among wide ranges of cells. Two domains in rat NF1-A between amino acid residues 393 and 447 and between residues 448 and 509. were important for transcriptional activation functions The carboxyterminal region of NF1-A at the position between residues 470 and 482 contains SPTSPTY sequence similar to the heptapeptide of carboxyterminal domain (CTD) of RNA polymerase II largest subunit, which has been implicated in the activation of transcription previously. The two domains were able to activate transcription independently and, when present together, more active than each of the domains by about two folds.
