A new dihydroflavone, 5-carboxymethyl-7,4'-dihydroxyflavonone (1), and its glucoside 5-carboxymethyl-7,4'-dihydroxyflavonone-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), and one new monoterpene glucoside, (4Z,6E)-2,7-dimethyl-8-hydroxyocta-4,6-dienoic acid 8-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (3), were isolated from the whole plants of Selaginella moellendorffii. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic methods and chemical transformation. Compound 2 was evaluated for the ability to enhance glucose consumption in normal and insulin-resistant L6 muscle cells induced by high concentrations of insulin and glucose. Glucose consumption in insulin-resistant cells (but not in normal cells) was increased 15.2 ± 3.3% (p < 0.01) by compound 2 at a concentration of 0.1 μM in the presence of insulin (1 nM).

Trichoderma spp. are widely applied, eco-friendly mycofungicides and plant growth promoters. Native Trichoderma strainsare likely to have more productive, stable biocontrol and biofertilizer activities since they are well adapted to the local environment. In this study, we isolated a native Trichoderma strain ‘Th62’ from the rhizosphere soil of wild Chelidonium majusplants in Harbin, China (126.6341°E, 45.7242°N). The isolated Trichoderma strain was identifi ed as a T. harzianum strainvia morphological observation and molecular methods based on the rDNA internal transcribed spacer region and elongationfactor-1α gene sequences. Signifi cant antagonistic activities of Th62 against fi ve soil-borne fungal phytopathogens,Fusarium oxysporum , Sclerotinia sclerotiorum , Alternaria alternata , Cytospora chrysosperma, and Rhizoctonia solani ,were confi rmed by dual-culture assays. Furthermore, the crude fermentation products of Th62 also displayed antifungalactivities against these fi ve pathogens. To evaluate the function of Th62 as a biofertilizer, we subsequently applied Th62on cockscomb ( Celosia cristata L), a plant species with both ornamental and medicinal values, by inoculation with Th62conidia at diff erent concentrations, 1 × 10 10 cfu mL −1 , 1 × 10 11 cfu mL −1 , and 1 × 10 12 cfu mL −1 . The benefi cial eff ects ofTh62 were evaluated by measuring the growth and photosynthetic traits of the inoculated cockscomb plants, and the resultsdemonstrated that Th62 signifi cantly improved the photosynthetic effi ciency, photosynthetic capacity, and the adaptabilityto intense light of the inoculated cockscomb plants compared to the controls. Consistently, Th62 inoculation signifi cantlyimproved the growth and fl ower yield of cockscomb. We presented a positive case of isolating and applying native microbialresources on local plantation practices.

A process flowsheet simulation model based on ASPEN PLUS was developed to investigate the effect of co-gasification of coal and rice husk on the gasifier performance and pollutant emissions in IGCC power plant. The analyses were done for an 02-blown, pulverized gasifier using coal and rice husk as feedstock, parameter employed the blending ratio of rice husk in coal were investigated. From the simulation results, it was found that gaseous pollutant emissions were reduced substantially with the increase of the blending ratio of rice husk. An optimum range between 15% and 25% rice husk-to-coal ratio was found to be the optimum point in terms of gaseous pollutant emission per energy output for sui fur and nitrogen compounds.

Abstract

Resistance random-access memory (RRAM) is a promising candidate for both the next-generation non-volatile memory and the key element of neural networks. In this article, different types of Mott-transition (the transition between the Mott insulator and metallic states) mechanisms and Mott-transition-based RRAM are reviewed. Mott insulators and some related doped systems can undergo an insulator-to-metal transition or metal-to-insulator transition under various excitation methods, such as pressure, temperature, and voltage. A summary of these driving forces that induce Mott-transition is presented together with their specific transition mechanisms for different materials. This is followed by a dynamics study of oxygen vacancy migration in voltage-driven non-volatile Mott-transition and the related resistive switching performance. We distinguish between a filling-controlled Mott-transition, which corresponds to the conventional valence change memory effect in band-insulators, and a bandwidth-controlled Mott-transition, which is due to a change in the bandwidth in the Mott system. Last, different types of Mott-RRAM-based neural network concepts are also discussed. The results in this review provide guidelines for the understanding, and further study and design of Mott-transition-based RRAM materials and their correlated devices.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Spatial-temporal texture features for 3D human activity recognition using laser-based RGB-D videos

The IR camera and laser-based IR projector provide an effective solution for real-time collection of moving targets in RGB-D videos. Different from the traditional RGB videos, the captured depth videos are not affected by the illumination variation. In this paper, we propose a novel feature extraction framework to describe human activities based on the above optical video capturing method, namely spatial-temporal texture features for 3D human activity recognition. Spatial-temporal texture feature with depth information is insensitive to illumination and occlusions, and efficient for fine-motion description. The framework of our proposed algorithm begins with video acquisition based on laser projection, video preprocessing with visual background extraction and obtains spatial-temporal key images. Then, the texture features encoded from key images are used to generate discriminative features for human activity information. The experimental results based on the different databases and practical scenarios demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm for the large-scale data sets.

Associations between ABCB1 and XPC genetic polymorphisms and risk of developing colorectal cancer (CRC) as well as clinical outcomes in CRCs with chemotherapy were investigated. A case-control study was performed on the ABCB1 C3435T, G2677T/A and XPC Lys939Gln polymorphisms in 428 CRC cases and 450 hospitalbased, age and sex frequency-matched controls using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assays. We observed that the ABCB1 3435CT or CC+CT variants were significantly linked with increasing risk of developing CRC (adjusted OR (95% CI): 1.814 (1.237-2.660), P=0.0022; adjusted OR (95% CI): 1.605 (1.117-2.306), P=0.0102, respectively). Moreover, the distribution frequency of XPC AC genotype or AC+CC genotypes also showed a tendency towards increasing the suscepbility for CRC (P=0.0759 and P=0.0903, respectively). Kaplan-Meier curves showed that the ABCB1 C3435T variant was associated with a tendency toward longer progression-free survival (PFS) (n=343, Log-rank test: P=0.063), and the G2677T/A variant genotypes (GT+TT+GA+AA) with a tendency for longer OS in postoperative oxaliplatin-based patients (n=343, Log-rank test: P=0.082). However, no correlation of the XPC Lys939Gln polymorphism was found with PFS and OS in patients with postoperative oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy (n=343). Our study indicated that ABCB1 polymorphisms might be candidate pharmacogenomic factors for the prediction of CRC susceptibility, but not for prognosis with oxaliplatin chemosensitivity in CRC patients.

To study the variation trend of the indentation rolling resistance of a rubber conveyor belt under different environmental temperatures, the sinusoidal compression displacement test was first carried out on the rubber matrix at six temperatures between -20 °C and 40 °C by a high and low temperature universal testing machine. Elastic modulus 1 E , 2 E and loss factor tanq of the rubber matrix were identified using the Fourier series. Then, the dynamic contact characteristics between the idling roller and conveyor belt were analyzed by the viscoelastic mechanics theory. Hence, the calculation equation of the indentation rolling resistance in the full thickness direction of the conveyor belt was deduced. Finally, a practical calculation and experimental verification of the indentation rolling resistance of the steel cord rubber conveyor belt at different temperatures were conducted. The results showed that the drop of the indentation rolling resistance of the conveyor belt was significant when the temperature was increased in the range of -20-10 °C. In the range of 10-40 °C, the influence of the increase of the ambient temperature on the indentation rolling resistance was relatively weak. Additionally, it is found that the contact force in the vertical direction and the idling roller diameter are important factors that affect the indentation rolling resistance of the conveyor belt. The influence of belt speed on the indentation rolling resistance is weak.
