Background/Aims: Understanding leukemic stem cell (LSC) is important for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) treatment. However, association of LSC with patient prognosis and genetic information in AML patients is unclear. Methods: Here we investigated the associations between genetic information and the various LSC phenotypes, namely multipotent progenitor (MPP)-like, lymphoid primed multipotent progenitor (LMPP)-like and granulocyte-macrophage progenitors (GMP)-like LSC in 52 AML patients. Results: In secondary AML patients, MPP-like LSC was significantly higher than de novo AML (p = 0.0037). The proportion of MPP-like LSC was especially high in post-myeloproliferative neoplasm AML (p = 0.0485). There was no correlation between age and LSC phenotype. Mutations of KRAS and NRAS were observed in MPP-like LSC dominant patients, TP53 and ASXL1 mutations in LMPP-like LSC dominant patients, and CEBPA, DNMT3A and IDH1 mutations in GMP-like LSC dominant patients. Furthermore, KRAS mutation was significantly associated with MPP-like LSC expression (p = 0.0540), and TP53 mutation with LMPP-like LSC expression (p = 0.0276). When the patients were separated according to the combined risk including next generation sequencing data, the poorer the prognosis, the higher the LMPP-like LSC expression (p = 0.0052). This suggests that the dominant phenotype of LSC is one of the important factors in predicting the prognosis and treatment of AML. Conclusions: LSC phenotype in AML is closely associated with the recurrent mutations which has prognostic implication. Further research to confirm the meaning of LSC phenotype in the context of genetic aberration is warranted.

<P>Based on Hirschi’s social control theory (1969), this study examined the relationship between attachment (an element of social bonds) and the onset of substance use among South Korean adolescents. Using discrete-time logistic regression, the study investigated how attachment to parents, teachers, and close friends was associated with the timing of first alcohol and cigarette use. A nationally representative sample of Korean youth from five waves of the Korea Youth Panel Survey (<I>N</I> = 3,449 at baseline) was studied. Higher levels of parent and teacher attachment were associated with delayed onset of alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking. Attachment to close friends, however, was associated with earlier onset of substance use. These findings suggest that strategies for early substance use prevention should specifically target the relationships that youth develop with parents and teachers. Furthermore, the results highlight the importance of managing youth’s relationships with close friends to prevent the inadvertent negative social influence of particular types of peers.</P>

Teacher quality is a key factor that determines quality of education. Being aware of this, the Korean government and teachers have been striving to improve teachers’ professionalism. Research about the impacts of efforts to enhance teacher professionalism on students’ academic achievement and course satisfaction, however, is extremely limited. This study sought to advance our understanding of the relationship between these factors by analyzing what teacher characteristics impact students’ achievement and satisfaction. To this end, the study drew on the middle and high school data from 3rd to 6th year survey of the Seoul Educational Longitudinal Study. Structural equational modeling were used as the main approach. Latent profile analysis, a kind of mixture modeling analysis, were used as needed. This study found that teachers’ participation in instruction enhancement activity and professional development impact students’ attitude toward mathematics lessons and their perception on class atmosphere, and ultimately impact their academic achievement as well as their overall satisfaction in the course. In addition, teachers’ use of EBS textbooks and videos impact 3rd grade high schoolers’ academic achievement. These findings suggest that effort to improve teacher professionalism positively impact students’ academic achievement and course satisfaction, although there is a difference according to the year grade. This study provides implications for education policy makers and teacher educators.

Various competencies such as critical thinking, systems thinking, problem solving competence, communication skill, and data literacy are likely to be required in the 4th industrial revolution. The competency regarding data literacy is one of those competencies. To nurture citizens who will live in the future, it is timely to consider research on teacher education for supporting teachers’ development of statistical thinking as well as statistical knowledge. Therefore, in this study we developed and implemented a data analysis project for pre-service teachers to understand their changes in statistical knowledge in addition to their experiences of data-driven decision making process that required them utilizing their statistical thinking. We used a mixed method (i.e., sequential explanatory design) research to analyze the quantitative and qualitative data collected. The findings indicated that pre-service teachers have low knowledge level of their understanding on the relationship between population means and sample means, and estimation of the population mean and its interpretation. When it comes to the data-driven decision making process, we found that the pre-service teachers’ experiences varied even when they worked as a small group for the project. We end this paper by presenting implications of the study for the fields of teacher education and statistics education.

Elementary mathematics textbooks present contents for enhancing problem solving competency. Still, teachers find teaching problem solving to be challenging. To understand the supports textbooks are suggesting, this study examined tasks from the challenging/thinking and inquiry mathematics. We analyzed 288 mathematical activities based on an analytic framework from the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum. Then, we employed latent class analysis to classify 83 mathematical tasks as a new approach to categorize tasks. As a result, execution of the problem solving process was emphasized across grade levels but understanding of problems was varied by grade levels. In addition, higher grade levels had more opportunities to be engaged in collaborative problem solving and problem posing. We identified three task profiles: ‘execution focus’, ‘collaborative-solution focus’, ‘multifaceted-solution focus’. In Grade 3, about 80% of tasks were categorized as the execution profile. The multifaceted-solution was about 40% in the thinking/challenging mathematics and the execution profile was about 70% in Inquiry mathematics. The implications for developing mathematics textbooks and designing mathematical tasks are discussed.
