Trivial and Real Exceptions in Generics

Concerning the issue of exceptions in generics, Cohen (2004) argues that exceptions are allowed in generics only if "homogeneity" is not violated. The homogeneity constraint restricts that the exceptions should not form a salient "chunk" of the domain of the generic. A salient chunk could be formed, depending on the way in which the domain is mentally represented. "Tree" and "geometric" representations are proposed as the two ways of mapping of cognitive mental representations. Yoon (2006) argues, however, that choices between these two mental representations claimed to be involved in the interpretation process of generics are quite arbitrary, and that counterexamples also exist for the "homogeneity" requirement. Yoon also suggests that generics involve cognitive conceptualizations based on the language users' encyclopedic knowledge, world knowledge from experiences, common sense, beliefs, stereotypes, prejudices, etc. Given this, this paper revisits the widely-agreed-upon phenomenon of exceptions in generics, and proposes that generics could be divided into two kinds depending on whether they contain trivial or real exceptions, elaborating on Yoon's analysis. It is further proposed that one kind of generics is characterizing statements based on the salient properties of "whole" sets while the other kind is characterizing statements based on the salient properties of "representative" sets. It will be shown that this approach better accounts for the acceptable and unacceptable generic statements.

한국 시의 릴케 受容

R. M. Rilke는 한국의 시인과 독자들에게 가장 큰 영향을 끼친 시인들 중의 한 사람이다. 이러한 릴케의 시를 수용한 한국의 대표적 시인들로는 윤동주, 김현승, 김춘수를 들 수 있다. 릴케의 시와 이들의 시를 대비해 본 결과, 윤동주는 릴케의 초기 시와 『기도시집』, 『형상시집』, 지상적 삶을 천명한 후기 시의 세계를 수용하고 있고, 김현승은 『기도시집』과 『형상시집』의 시 세계를 ‘가을’ 시편들에서, 『두이노의 비가』와 후기 시의 시 세계를 ‘고독’ 시편들에서 수용하고 있다. 김춘수는 초기 시와 『형상시집』, 『신시집』 등의 시 세계를 수용하고 있는데, 특히 그의 「꽃」 계열의 시들은 릴케의 시작 태도를 본격적으로 수용하고 있다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 그러나 이 세 시인들도 릴케 시를 완전히 수용했다고는 보기 어렵다. 윤동주는 20대의 젊은 나이로 세상을 떠났고, 김현승은 ‘地上에의 決意’를 천명한 릴케와 달리 만년에 다시 기독교로 귀의했으며, 김춘수는 관념의 중압을 이기지 못하고 무의미시로 옮겨갔다. 그러나 탁월한 시인 릴케의 수용으로 한국 시의 지평이 예술성과 형이상학성에서 한층 깊어진 것은 분명한 사실이다. The representative Korean poets who followed Rilke's poetic world are Yoon-Dongjoo, Kim-Hyunseung, and Kim-Choonsoo. Yoon-Dongjoo was influenced by his early poems, 『Das Stunden-Buch』, 『Das Buch der Bilder』 and his latter years' poems shows a tendency of existentialism. Kim-Hyunseung accepted the literary world expressed in 『Das Stunden-Buch』 and 『Das Buch der Bilder』 in his 'autumn poems' and, in his 'solitude poems', accepted the poetic vision expressed in 『Duineser Elegien』 and the latter years' poems. Kim-Choonsoo adopted the poetic spirit in the poems of his early period, 『Das Buch der Bilder』and 『Neue Gedichte』. Their receptiveness and acceptiveness of Rilke's literary world were not completely succesfull but his influence on Korean poetry was so strong that their is no doubt that he deepened the Korean literary art and thought.

코로나19 대응 거버넌스의 성공 요인에 관한 탐색적 연구: 성과중심적 거버넌스 모형을 활용하여

본 연구는 코로나19 방역 모범국이라는 평가를 받는 한국의 코로나19 대응 전략 및 성공 요인을 살펴보는 데 그 목적이 있다. 코로나19 감염병은 사회재난 중 하나로 정부가 중심이 되는 공공거버넌스의 영역이라고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 공공거버넌스 유형 중 하나인 성과중심적 거버넌스 모형을 활용하여 코로나19 방역의 성과(확진자와 사망자의 통제 가능 여부)에 영향을 미치는 요인들을 탐색적으로 분석한다. 분석결과 거버넌스 맥락, 정권, 행정적 준비단계, 성과향상 실행메커니즘에 포함되는 다양한 요인들이 한국의 코로나19 방역의 성과에 이바지한 것으로 나타났다. 구체적으로 살펴보면, 첫째, 거버넌스 맥락 차원에서 2015년 메르스 대응실패 이후 이루어진 법령 개정, 중앙집권체계, 정보통신기술발달 등 방역 활동에 우호적인 외부환경 요소들이 방역의 성과향상에 기여하였다. 둘째, 정권 차원에서 방역당국에 대한 대통령의 적극적 지원과 범정부적 조직/인사/예산지원은 방역당국이 효과적으로 방역에 집중할 수 있도록 하는 밑거름이 되었다. 셋째, 행정적 준비단계 차원에서 구체적으로 마련된 표준운영절차(SOP)와 담당자에 대한 교육/훈련을 통한 역량 강화는 방역 일선 담당자들의 일사불란한 대처를 가능하게 했다. 넷째, 성과향상 실행메커니즘 차원에서 방역당국은 주어진 상황 및 여건에 맞춘 적절한 대비를 하였을 뿐만 아니라 신속한 진단검사 및 역학조사를 통해 확진자를 조기 발견하여 적시에 감염병 확산을 차단할 수 있었다. 결론적으로 피해복구 단계를 제외한 예방, 대비, 대응 단계에서 적절한 조치가 이루어졌고, 이로 인해 비록 미흡한 점이 일부 있기는 하나 한국의 코로나19 방역이 어느 정도 성공적으로 작동하였다고 볼 수 있다. South Korea is being evaluated by global media and experts for its successful response to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The purpose of this study is to examine the Korean government’s response strategy and success factors for COVID-19 using the performancebased/managerial governance model which was presented by Kong & Yoon(2018b). It found that various factors, such as governance context, governance regime, pre-governance and execution mechanisms, all together contributed to South Korea’s success in responding to COVID-19. These findings can be considered to be of theoretical significance in that they expanded the applicability of the public governance model proposed by Kong & Yoon. In addition, the case of South Korea, which has harmoniously achieved the two conflicting goals of controlling infectious disease and minimizing economic damage, provides many practical implications for how other countries should cope in the future.

Three-Dimensional Z-Plasty(Yoon's Method)를 이용한 내안각 췌피 성형술

The presence of epicanthal folds in Asian eyelids is one of their unique features, in combination with the lack of supratarsal folds. Western culture has influenced many people to prefer to eliminate the prominent epicanthal fold. A number of surgical techniques have been suggested for their correction. However, difficulty with design, excessive and prominent scarring of medial canthal and nasal area, recurrence, and rigidity of application are potential problems associated with many procedures. This paper describes a epicanthoplasty with three-dimensional Z-plasty. Through epicanthal fold incision, the medial canthal tendon is medially advanced and sutured to the periosteum of nasal bone. After the transposition of the flaps, trimming of the flap is usually required. Three-dimensional Z-plasty creates the attractive eyes. From March, 1995 to March, 1997, the technique was applied to 37 patients with epicanthal fold and was performed with or without double-fold operation. There were 34 females and 3 males with ages ranging from 17 to 30 years. Through 2 years follow-up, this technique has delivered esthetically good results with minimal postoperative scar and could made the reduction of ICD from 40 ± 2.13 mm to 34 ± 1.98 mm. The advantages of epicanthoplasty procedure using three-dimensional Z-plasty(Yoon's method) are as follows; 1) simple in design 2)minimal postoperative scar in the medial canthal area 3) versatile in its application 4) no recurrence 5) no hypertrophic scar 6) preserving ethnic identity.

1950~1960년대 기상재해와 농촌마을의 대응 - 대천일기와 대천마을을 사례로 -

본 연구는 윤희수의 대천일기(1954~1971)를 사례로 기상재해가 농업과 농촌마을에 미치는 영향 그리고 농민, 마을, 정부의 대응에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 농업에는 기상재해 중 태풍이나 집중 호우의 영향이 크기 때문에 일기에는 이에 대한 기록이 많이 나타난다. 1954~1971년 동안 부산에 30회의 태풍이 내습했으나 대천마을과 농업에 악영향을 미친 태풍은 3회, 호우는 5회였다. 기상재해로 큰 피해를 입었을 때 마을은 물품(생필품, 수해방지용품) 지원과 경제적 지원을 받을 수 있었다. 대천천에 접한 농경지(육두락)는 피해가 잦은 곳이었기 때문에 윤희수는 무너진 제방을 복구하는 일을 반복하였으며 공사비용은 농민이 부담하였다. 마을 차원의 대처와 복구의 경우 동장, 통장 그리고 각종 마을 위원들이 주도하였고 작업은 마을 주민, 정부 조직, 고용된 인부에 의해 추진되었다. 1960년대 재해대책은 기상재해가 발생한 후의 구호 또는 응급복구가 대부분이었다. 정부의 근본적인 방지대책이 부재했기 때문에 이로 인한 피해는 전적으로 농민들의 몫이었다. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of meteorological disasters on agriculture and rural village, and the actions of farmers, village, and government in Daecheon Diary(1954~1971) of Yoon. Because of the large impacts of typhoons and heavy rain during a meteorological disaster in agriculture, there are many records in the diary. Thirty typhoons entered Busan in 1954~1971, but three typhoons and five torrential rains had adversely affected Daecheon Village and agriculture. When it was hit hard by a weather disaster, Daecheon Village was able to receive goods(necessaries, items for preventing flooding) support and economic support. Because the farmland(Yookdulak) facing the Daecheon Stream was a frequent place of damage, Yoon repeatedly restored the broken levees and the cost of the construction had to be paid by the farmer. In the case of coping and restoration of village-level, a chief of Dong, a village headman and members of the committee led the works, and the works were carried out by villagers, government organization and hired laborers. Disaster measures in the 1960s were mostly relief or emergency recovery after a meteorological disaster. Since the government did not have a fundamental preventive measure, the damages were entirely the farmers’ burden.

Spatial and Temporal Politics of Memories: Focusing on Shepard’s Fool for Love

Well-known for a prolific writer, Shepard won a variety of awards. Shepard’s theatrical techniques are particular and salient to investigate. The West is one of his recurring themes, which are focused on American identity, American-ness, American fathers’ masculinity as well. Sam Shepard as a successor to tradition of American plays embodies his peculiar realism on the stage, his theatrical techniques sums up representation of using real props, immediacy and transformation techniques. His Family Trilogy and Family Plays are representative ones to show his theatricalism. This study investigates Sam Shepard's Fool for Love, which belongs to his Family Plays. Its main focus is on spatial division and temporal reversal with a view of incestuous relationships between siblings. This stage has conscious and subconscious spaces which are revealed by dividing characters’ areas onstage. Among them, women's space seems relatively empty like the picture the Old Man pointed out. There certainly exists May, but there is no room for their mothers despite providing their father’s space. Moreover, the father figure shows authorities to cross the border between reality and fantasy. In particular, the Old Man’s utterance has control over Eddie. Memories of the characters onstage are connected to passage of time; especially to show the Old Man’s past duality. For that reason, Eddie and May are inseparably stuck in rhetorical topography of love. Therefore, their foolishness for love is about the Old Man’s dual life with his two families. Like a quote by Archbishop Anthony Bloom, “The proper response to love is to accept it. There is nothing to do.”

The Relationship among Engagement in Workplace Learning Activities, Openness to Learning, and the Extent of Participant Involvement in Informal Learning

일터학습에 있어서 비공식학습의 중요성이 대두함에 따라, 많은 기업들은 직원들의 비공식 학습을 촉진할 수 있는 다양한 학습전략응사용하고 있다. 기존의 연구들은 기업 내 공식학습과 비공식학습은 상호 연관되어 있어, 공식학습을 제공할 경우 비공식학습도 동시에 활성화된다고 주장한다. 본 연구는 직원들이 기업에서 행해지고 있는 일터학습에 참여하는 정도가 비공식학습활동에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 연구함으로써, 일터학습의 참여도와 비공식학습의 관계를 알아보고자 하였다. 일터학습에 참여하고 있는 제약회사의 직원들을 대상으로 한 설문조사에 대하여 회귀분석을 실시한 결과, 일터학습에 참여하는 것 자체는 직원들이 비공식학습에 몰입하는 정도에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 실천공동체와 온라인 학습의 경우 비공식학습에 부정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 기업이 일터학습을 제공하더라도, 체계적인 형태를 갖추지 못했거나 직원들 간의 상호작용을 촉진하지 못할 경우 일터학습이 오히려 비공식학습을 저해할 수 있다는 것을 보여준다. 그러나 개인의 학습 개방성은 비공식학습의 정도에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나, 일터학습의 참여도가 비공식학습의 정도에 미치는 영향에 조절효과를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 끝으로 연구결과는 관리자 직급에 있는 근로자들의 경우 그렇지 않은 직원들에 비하여 비공식학습활동에 더 많이 참여하고 있다는 것을 보여준다. 관리자 직급의 근로자들은 학습에 대한 경험이 풍부하고, 학습의 필요성에 대해서도 충분히 인식하여 비공식학습활동에도 적극적으로 참여하고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 따라서, 기업 내에서 비공식학습을 활성화시키기 위하여, 종업원들에게 일터학습을 제공하고 이것에 참여하도록 유도하는 것뿐만 아니라, 직원들 스스로 학습에 참여할 수 있는 개방적 태도를 지닐 수 있도록 지원하는 것이 중요하다는 것을 보여준다. Informal learning in the workplace is becoming more important for improving employees’ competencies and organizational performance. Many business organizations use a variety of workplace learning strategies in order to facilitate informal learning among employees. Research on workplace learning explains that formal learning and informal learning interrelate and facilitate each other. This study investigated the relationship among engagement in workplace learning activities, openness to learning, and the extent of participant involvement in informal learning. As a result of quantitative research in a pharmacy company, this study showed the following: (a) openness to learning affects participant involvement in informal learning more than engagement in workplace learning activities does; (b) among types of workplace learning, communities of practice negatively influence internal informal learning, and web-based learning also has a negative effect on involvement in internal, external informal learning and informal learning among newly hired employees, but traditional classroom training positively affects participants’ involvement in informal learning among new employees; and (c) employees at the managerial level involve in informal learning activities more than other employees. These results suggest that business organizations and corporate management should support and facilitate employees to learn with openness as well as provide them with workplace learning opportunities.
