The purposes of this study were to analyze the kinematic variations between skilled and unskilled individuals and obtain the data needed to improve effective side kick skill in Teakwondo. We used a video analysis program to collect performance time, changes in movement of the center of the body, angle, and angular velocity. The results were as follows : 1) in unskilled cases, side kick motion occurred for more time than in unskilled cases, 2) to make a stronger kick, the skilled group increased the joint speed of the legs and unskilled athletes have smaller angles than experienced athletes. As a result, the total performance time of side kicks was shorter for skilled people and was consistent with other previous studies. The angle of the knee joint and hip joint had a great influence on the side kick. The range of motion of the hip and knee joints should be increased so that the desired hitting point can be quickly reached.

The gene expressions of 5 cytokines(IL-1, IL-2, IL-6, TNFα and IFNy) from human peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMC) stimulated with Lentinus edodes lectin(LEL) were investigated by using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR). PBMC(1×10^(6) cells/ml) isolated from healthy volunteers were stimulated with LEL(O.D.=3.0) or lipopolysaccharide(LPS, 10㎎/ml) for various times(1, 8, 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 hours). After each of the various stimulated times, total RNA was isolated by RNA sol B method and assessed for various cytokines mRNA by RT-PCR. The mRNA encoding IL-6 and IFNy were detected continuously from 1 to 120 hours. The mRNA encoding IL-1 were detected up to 72 hours and the intensity of the band were increased from 24 to 72 hours. The mRNA encoding IL-2 were detected from 8 to 120 hours and showed delayed reaction compare with other cytokines, But the mRNA encoding TNFα was detected up to 24 hours only. The patterns of TNfα gene expression showed short time response compared with other cytokines. These results suggest that LEL as an inducers of cytokines, can elicits a detectable cytokine on mRNA from the PBMC within the first few hours of stimulation.

The effects of Laminaria japonica fucoidan extract (LJFE) on the biochemical parameters of lipid-related function were investigated in liver and serum of CCl_(4)-treated rats. LJFE of 100 mg/kg concentration was intraperitoneally administered into rats at dose of 1.5 ml/kg for 14 days. On the day 15, 3.3 ml/kg of CCl_(4) dissolved in olive oil (1:1) was injected 12 hours before anesthetization. We examined the lipid-related functions and enzyme activitys by measuring the levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in serum. The results showed that CCl_(4) treatment increased the high values of TG, LDH and ALP decreased the low values of TC but LJFE pretreatment decreased the high values of TG, LDH and ALP to the low values, increased the TC. It was suggested that LJFE can be used as the potential candidate for the lipid-metabolism natural supplement.

The ethyl acetate-soluble fraction from the ethanolic extract of Angelica keiskei showed potent inhibitory activity against the production of nitric oxide (NO) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated RAW 264.7 cells. We identified seven chalcones (1–7) from EtOAc-soluble fractions through the activity-guided separation. Four active principles, identified as 4-hydroxyderrcine (1), xanthoangelol E (2), xanthokeismin A (4), and xanthoangelol B (5), inhibited the production of NO and the expression of proinflammatory cytokines, interleukin (IL)-1b and IL-6, in LPS-activated macrophages. Western blotting and reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction analysis demonstrated that these chalcones attenuated protein and mRNA levels of inflammatory enzymes such as inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2).Moreover, these active compounds suppressed the degradation of inhibitory-jBa (I-jBa) and the translocation of nuclear factor jB (NF-jB) into nuclei of LPS-activated macrophages. These data demonstrate that four chalcones (1, 2, 4, and 5) fromA. keiskei can suppress the LPSinduced production of NO and the expression of iNOS/COX-2 genes by inhibiting the degradation of I-jBa and nuclear translocation of NF-jB. Taken together, four chalcones from A. keiskei may have efficacy as anti-inflammatory agents.

Flavonoids, which form a major component in Houttuynia cordata Thunb., display a wide range of pharmacological activities. The expression of plant flavonoids is partly regulated by fermentation. Therefore, we studied the effects of fermentation on H. cordata in order to identify the strains present during the fermentation process, and to determine whether fermented H. cordata could be used as a probiotic. Our results showed that all 6 of the bacterial strains isolated from fermented H. cordata (FHC) belonged to the genus Bacillus. As expected, fermenting H cordata also increased the flavonoid content as increases were observed in the levels of rutin, quercitrin, and quercetin. To test the effects of fermentation, we treated LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells with non-fermented H. cordata extracts (HCE) or FHC extracts (FHCE). Compared to the HCE-treated cells, the FHCE-treated cells showed increased viability. No cytotoxic effects were detected in the FHCE-treated groups in the 2 cell lines used in the study, namely, RAW264.7 and RBL-2H3. FHCE-treated HepG2 cells showed decreased growth, compared to HCE-treated HepG2 cells. These results indicate that the fermented H. cordata predominantly contained Bacillus strains. Furthermore, FHCE are able to prevent LPS-induced inflammatory effects and inhibit the growth of HepG2 cells.
