        Evaluation of the effects of whitening mouth rinses combined with conventional tooth bleaching treatments

        Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of whitening mouth rinses alone and in combination with conventional whitening treatments on color, microhardness, and surface roughness changes in enamel specimens. Materials and Methods: A total of 108 enamel specimens were collected from human third molars and divided into 9 groups ( n = 12): 38% hydrogen peroxide (HP), 10% carbamide peroxide (CP), 38% HP + Listerine Whitening (LW), 10% CP + LW, 38% HP + Colgate Plax Whitening (CPW), 10% CP + CPW, LW, CPW, and the control group (CG). The initial color of the specimens was measured, followed by microhardness and roughness tests. Next, the samples were bleached, and their color, microhardness, and roughness were assessed. Data were analyzed through 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA; microhardness and roughness) and 1-way ANOVA (color change), followed by the Tukey post hoc test. The Dunnett test was used to compare the roughness and microhardness data of the CG to those of the treated groups. Results: Statistically significant color change was observed in all groups compared to the CG. All groups, except the LW group, showed statistically significant decreases in microhardness. Roughness showed a statistically significant increase after the treatments, except for the 38% HP group. Conclusions: Whitening mouth rinses led to a whitening effect when they were used after conventional treatments; however, this process caused major changes on the surface of the enamel specimens.

        Gallibacterium elongation factor-Tu possesses amyloid-like protein characteristics, participates in cell adhesion, and is present in biofilms

        Gallibacterium, which is a bacterial pathogen in chickens, can form biofilms. Amyloid proteins present in biofilms bind Congo red dye. The aim of this study was to characterize the cell-surface amyloid-like protein expressed in biofilms formed by Gallibacterium strains and determine the relationship between this protein and curli, which is an amyloid protein that is commonly expressed by members of the Enterobacteriaceae family. The presence of amyloid-like proteins in outer membrane protein samples from three strains of G. anatis and one strain of Gallibacterium genomospecies 2 was evaluated. A protein identified as elongation factor-Tu (EF-Tu) by mass spectrometric analysis and in silico analysis was obtained from the G. anatis strain F149T. This protein bound Congo red dye, cross-reacted with anti-curli polyclonal serum, exhibited polymerizing properties and was present in biofilms. This protein also reacted with pooled serum from chickens that were experimentally infected with G. anatis, indicating the in vivo immunogenicity of this protein. The recombinant EF-Tu purified protein, which was prepared from G. anatis 12656-12, polymerizes under in vitro conditions, forms filaments and interacts with fibronectin and fibrinogen, all of which suggest that this protein functions as an adhesin. In summary, EF-Tu from G. anatis presents amyloid characteristics, is present in biofilms and could be relevant for the pathogenesis of G. anatis.

        Preparation and characterization of polymer/layered silicate pharmaceutical nanobiomaterials using high clay load exfoliation processes

        The purpose of this study was to prepare and characterize lamellar silicate nanocomposites usingexfoliation processes, high clay load and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), ethylcellulose (EC) andpolyquaternium-H (PQH). The clays (sodium montmorillonite, Viscogel S4TM, S7TM and B8TM) werepre-treated with ultrasonic energy in order to increase clay exfoliation yields. Polymeric nanocompositeswere characterized by XRPD, DSC, TGA, DLS and NMR. The results revealed a new exfoliationmethod and new intercalated nanocomposites. High clay load was used to obtain the nanocomposites,which enables its application at an industrial scale. These nanocomposites could be broadly appliedacross the pharmaceutical, medical and food industries.

        Kinematics and dynamics modeling of the 6-3-PUS-type Hexapod parallel mechanism

        Modeling and analyzing the dynamics of mechanical systems is important for purposes of simulation, design and control. In the case of parallel manipulators, dynamics modeling becomes a complex task mainly due to the constraints imposed by the closed kinematic chains, and several methods have been proposed for solving that problem. Some authors suggest first using a non-minimal set of coordinates and then computing a minimal dynamics model by means of the so-called projection method. This paper reports the use of such procedure for obtaining the dynamics model of a particular parallel mechanism of the type known as 6-3-PUS. To compute the non-minimal dynamics we employed the Euler-Lagrange formulation. The computed kinematics and dynamics models were validated via numerical simulations. This modeling approach can be employed for similar mechanisms.

        Use of hot water, combination of hot water and phosphite, and 1-MCP as post-harvest treatments for passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. fl avicarpa) reduces anthracnose and does not alter fruit quality

        This research aimed to evaluate the eff ectiveness of hot water (43–53 °C · 5 min −1 ; 47 °C · 2–6 min −1 ), 1-methylcyclopropene(1-MCP) at 50–300 nL L −1 and a combination of hot water (47/49 °C · 5 min −1 ) and phosphite (40% P 2 O 5 + 20% K 2 O; 40%P 2 O 5 + 10% Zn) in anthracnose control and the eff ect on fruit quality [fresh weight loss (FWL—%); pH, total soluble solids(TSS—°Brix), and titratable acidity (TA = % citric acid (CA)] of passion fruit ( Passifl ora edulis f. fl avicarpa ) at the postharveststage. When the fruits were in the stage of 0% dehydration and fully yellow peels, they were disinfested and inoculatedwith Colletotrichum gloeosporioides . They were then subjected to the above mentioned treatments; this was followedby incubation for 120 h. The diameter of the disease lesions was monitored daily. After the incubation, a physico-chemicalanalysis was performed. Hot-water treatment resulted in disease reduction at 47 and 49 °C for 4 and 5 min. The combinationof hot-water treatment at 47 °C (4 or 5 min) and application of the phosphite of K or Zn signifi cantly reduced diseaseseverity in fruits. The 1-MCP treatment reduced anthracnose severity in passion fruit mainly at 200 nL L −1 · 24 h −1 . None ofthe treatments signifi cantly changed the physico-chemical characteristics of the fruit [FWL (2.6–4.1%); pH (3.2–3.5), TSS(8.9–10.9 °Brix), and TA (1.8–2.5% CA)].

        Virgin Coconut Oil Associated with High-Fat Diet Induces Metabolic Dysfunctions, Adipose Inflammation, and Hepatic Lipid Accumulation

        Obesity reaches an epidemic level worldwide, and this condition is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation and secondary comorbidities, largely driven by global changes in lifestyle and diet. Various dietary approaches are proposed for the obesity treatment and its associated metabolic disorders. Good taste, antioxidant functions, and vitamins have been attributed to virgin coconut oil (VCO). However, VCO contains a large amount of saturated fatty acids, and the consumption of this fat is associated with a number of secondary diseases. We evaluate the effects of VCO supplementation on biochemical, inflammatory, and oxidative stress parameters in rats fed with high-fat diet (HFD). After feeding with HFD for 12 weeks, the animals were supplemented with VCO for 30 days. HFD+VCO group increased in diet intake, weight gain, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level, and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels. These findings were accompanied by increased in hepatic lipid profile and fat deposition in the liver. Adipocyte hypertrophy was observed in the HFD+VCO group, which was associated with elevated expression of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in adipose tissue. These results revealed that VCO associated with HFD induced important metabolic alterations, adipose inflammation, and hepatic lipid accumulation in rats.

        Can silver diamine fluoride or silver nanoparticle-based anticaries agents to affect enamel bond strength?

        Objectives: The aim of the current study is to investigate the effect of different anticaries agents, such as experimental agents based on silver nanoparticles (SNPs) and silver diamine fluoride (SDF), on the micro-shear bond strength (μ-SBS) of composite resin applied to intact enamel (IE) or demineralized enamel (DE). Materials and Methods: Sixty dental enamel fragments were collected from human third molars and categorized into 6 groups (n = 10): positive control (IE), negative control (DE), IE + SDF, DE + SDF, IE + SNP and DE + SNP. Samples from DE, DE + SDF and DE + SNP groups were subjected to pH cycling; superficial microhardness test was performed to confirm demineralization. Resin composite build-ups were applied to the samples (0.75-mm diameter and 1-mm height) after the treatments (except for IE and DE groups); μ-SBS was also evaluated. Samples were analyzed under a stereomicroscope at 40× magnification to identify failure patterns. Data were subjected to one-way analysis of variance, followed by Tukey's and Dunnett's tests (p < 0.05). Results: There was no significant difference among the IE, IE + SNP, DE + SDF, and DE + SNP groups. The IE + SDF and DE groups recorded the highest and the lowest μ-SBS values, respectively. Adhesive-type failures were the most frequent for all treatments. Conclusions: Anticaries agents did not have a negative effect on the μ-SBS of composite resin when it was used on IE or DE.

        본 논고는 방법론적으로 애니메이션과 구별하여 취급할 필요가 있는 인쇄물인 만화, 즉 최근 글로벌한 규모로 성공해 있는 일본의 코믹 만화를 대상으로 하고 있다. 이 만화는 효율적인 스토리 전개와 감정이입하기 쉬운 캐릭터들 덕분에 애독되어 왔음에도 불구하고, 만화를 문학보다 미술의 시점에서 논술하는 전통은 오래 전부터 시작되었다. 그렇지만 현재 만화론의 전문가는 만화를 미술의 한 분야로서 고찰하지 않는 경우가 많다. 구미지역의 만화는 특정 상업적 주류가 지배하는 일본 漫畵觀에서 기인하고 있는데 반해, 일본의 만화는 미술의 권위에 대한 위화감으로 증명되고 있다. 본 논고는 이러한 상황을 출발점으로 하여 현대 일본의 만화와 미술의 관계를 둘러싼 연구에 초점을 맞추어 연구자가 직관해야 할 담적 구상을 추구하였다. 먼저 첫 번째로, 만화의 기원을 일본의 고미술까지 거슬러 올라가려는 담론에 초점을 맞추었다. 만화의 기원이라고 일컬어지는 〈鳥獸(A物)?畵〉를 예로 들어, 고미술에서 현대 만화까지의 연속성을 주장하는 입장은 순수하게 형식적인 것이며, 근대화에 해를 받지 않은 ‘日本美’에 대한 동경에서 기인한다는 점을 명확히 하고 있다. 이전에는 ‘미술’의 권위를 빌려 만화의 존재의식을 제시하는 방법이 중심이었지만, 최근에는 오히려 만화의 역량을 빌려 ‘미 술’ 세계로 입문하는 방법으로 방향을 바꾸었다. 그러나 만화라고 하는 표현 미디어가 근본적으로 기생적이고 잡종적이지만 그러한 까닭에 만화가 미술의 근대주의적인 개념에서 벗어나게 되었다는 점, 이 점을 여전히 눈치 채지 못하고 빠트리기 십상이다. 두 번째로, 만화를 흔히 고미술과 관련시키려는 미술교육자 및 일본의 매스컴 등과는 정반대로 ‘非連續說’ 을 제시해 온 漫畵史家들의 의견을 소개한다. 그들은 신문이나 잡지 등과 같은 매스컴, 視空間을 명확하게 규정하는 한정된 컷, 더욱이 西洋化로서의 근대화라고 하는 점을 단서로 삼아 만화를 일본의 고미술과 결별한 결과로 생겨난 것이라고 이해하고 있다. 또한 이러한 근대성에서 메이지 期의 造語나 수입물이었던 ‘미술’ 과 그리 다름이 없다는 점도 강조하고 있다. 끝으로 현대 미술로 시점을 옮겨 최근 국제 미술시장에서 注目度가 가장 높은 일본인 예술가 무라카미 다카시(村上隆)가 어떤 류의 ‘만화다움’ 을 채용하고 있는가에 대해서 언급하 고 있다. 무라카미의 예술에 출현하고 있는 것은 네오 자포니즘(N대 Japonisme)이라고 할 수 있는 상업전략을 지탱하고 있는 듯이, 자신에게 중요했던 만화작품도 아니고 일본 만화의 지극히 다양한 전체상도 아니라, 오히려 종래의 스토리 창출에 감탄사를 보내지도 않고 회화와 만화론에서 동시에 경시를 받아 온 同人誌系의 만화이다. 무라카미 다카시도 제시하고 있듯이 미술 분야에서 등장하는 만화 요소는 많이 주목되고 있는 반면에, 만화가 미술에서 받은 영향은 중요시되고 있지 않다. 이러한 ‘부조화’ 는 일본 특유의 근대화 및 이에 대해 미술에 위탁된 내셔널리즘을 둘러싼 담론사, 그리고 미술사학 및 미학ㆍ예술학에 의한 비판적인 학술 연구 및 만화 연구의 교류를 요구하고 있다. This essay focuses on Japanese comics (manga) as a globally successful print-medium which cannot easily be mixed up methodologically with animation movies or anime TV series. Although its popularity stem, mainly from efficient narration and impressive characters, manga has been conceptualized and legitimized preferably within the framework of visual fine art. However, comics experts today rarely appreciate manga as fine art-abroad, due to the dominance of commercial comics for teenagers; in Japan, due to a distrust in the authority of fine art. Taking this as its starting point, the essay explores discourses the researcher is confronted with when it comes to the interrelation of manga and fine art in contemporary Japan. First, it illuminates the claiming of manga's cultural value in the name of old Japanese art. References like those to the medieval Scrolls if Frolicking Animals have mostly been serving to confirm a Japanese particularity uninterrupted by modernization. But whereas premodern art has previously been utilized by promoters of manga for elevating their medium, now, it is the other way round and manga is utilized more often by outsiders of the manga world in order to popularize fine art. Unfortunately, those often disregard the fact, that not only manga, but comics in general are characterized by aesthetic as well as cultural hybridity, a fundamentally parasitic form of expression which escapes modernists notions of art. Second, in contradistinction to the Japanese educational system and mass-media which tend to emphasize a purely formal continuity between old Japanese pictorial art and contemporary comics, manga historians have pointed out that the genre of manga rested rather upon a striking break with the past and distinguished itself around 1900 fundamentally from the entertaining illustrated literature of the previous period In regard to the import of the panel as a stylistic means which makes time and space definite as certain moments and certain places, the emergence of modem mass media in the form of newspapers and magazines, and the particularity of Japan's modernization as Westernization, experts have increasingly understood manga as a fundamentally modem phenomenon-just as modem as the concept and institution of fine art (bijutsu). Third, artist Murakami Takashi, whose works are often labelled "manga style", serves as an example for how elements of manga enter contemporary art and which aspects of Japanese comics are favorized. This examination leads to the conclusion, that once again the intricate medium of comics is limited to purely pictorial art, although in this case in order to support Neo-japonist commercial purposes. The essay closes with the observation, that there has been some research about the influence of comics on art, but almost none concerning the opposite direction, and it calls for a respective balancing in order to undermine nationalism which has been favorably resting on visual fine art, and on the oilier hand, in order to heighten a general awareness for ambiguities by means of the hybrid manga medium.
