Tropical red alga Compsopogon caeruleus: an indicator of thermally polluted waters of Europe in the context of temperature and oxygen requirements

        Andrzej S., Rybak,Andrzej M., Woyda-Ploszczyca The Korean Society of Phycology 2022 ALGAE Vol.37 No.4

The red alga Compsopogon caeruleus can generally be found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. In addition to its natural habitats, this species may be found in waters that receive abnormally hot water, e.g., from powerhouses. To date, the presence of C. caeruleus has not been observed in thermally polluted lacustrine ecosystems in Poland, which has a moderate climate. The thalli of this red alga were found growing on Vallisneria spiralis in Lichenskie Lake. Importantly, this paper presents a previously unknown relationship between the temperature (20, 25, 30, 35, and 40℃) and oxygen requirements of C. caeruleus (based on ex situ measurements of O2 consumption by thalli). Surprisingly, 35℃ can be the optimum temperature for C. caeruleus, and this temperature is higher than the values reported by some previous thermal analyses by approximately 10℃. Additionally, we reviewed and mapped the distribution of this nonnative and mesophilic red alga in natural / seminatural water ecosystems in Europe. Finally, we propose that the occurrence of C. caeruleus mature thalli can be a novel, simple and easy-to-recognize bioindicator of artificially and permanently heated waters in moderate climate zones by a regular discharge of postindustrial water.

Clinical Course and Results of Surgery for Chronic Subdural Hematomas in Patients on Drugs Affecting Hemostasis

Dziedzic, Tomasz Andrzej,Kunert, Przemyslaw,Marchel, Andrzej The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2017 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.60 No.2

Objective : An apparent increase of use of drugs affecting hemostasis in our neurosurgical department since the 1990s has encouraged us to investigate whether these drugs influence the clinical course and results of surgery for chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH). Methods : This retrospective analysis included 178 patients admitted for CSDH from 2007 to 2011 who were divided into two groups : on drugs affecting hemostasis (40; 22%) and no bleeding disorders (138; 78%). Medications in the first group included oral anticoagulants (33; 82.5%), antiplatelets (5; 12.5%) and low molecular weight heparins (2; 5%). Results : The patients on drugs affecting hemostasis were older ($74.3{\pm}7.4$ vs. $68.4{\pm}14.8$; p-value 0.01) and the group without bleeding disorders had more head trauma history (61% vs. 38%, p-value 0.01). The groups did not differ in bilateral hematoma rates (25% vs. 20%, p-value=NS). At diagnosis, mean hematoma thickness was lower in patients on drugs affecting hemostasis ($18.7{\pm}7.4mm$ vs. $21.9{\pm}7.9mm$, p-value<0.01). Average stay of hospital was 1 day longer in patients on drugs affecting hemostasis ($11.7{\pm}4.1$ vs.$10.9{\pm}5.3$, p-value=NS) and was related to the necessity of bleeding disorder reversal. Mean neurological status at presentation was similar between the groups (p-value=NS) as was the likelihood of hematoma recurrence (p-value=NS). Glasgow Outcome Scale results were comparable. Conclusion : Patients on drugs affecting hemostasis are less often aware of a head trauma history, possibly suggesting a higher CSDH risk after minor trauma in this group. In these patients, smaller hematomas are symptomatic, probably due to faster hematoma formation. Drugs affecting hemostasis do not affect treatment results.

      • The LasT TwenTy years of reLaTions beTween The repubLic of poLand and The democraTic peopLe’s repubLic of Korea - seLecTed aspecTs(1989~2009)

andrzej bober 국가안보전략연구원 2011 The Journal of East Asian Affairs Vol.25 No.2

The last Twenty Years of Relations between the Republic of Poland and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea - Selected Aspects The relations between Poland and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea have been considered “good” for years. Today, the Republic of Poland has diplomatic representation in Pyongyang as well as in Seoul, but this was not always the case. The author of this article tries to focus his attention only on a few of the many aspects of cooperation between Warsaw - Pyongyang on the basis of well known and being wide in access of press information, but also hold talks with Polish diplomats and experts on North Korea. Many Polish people, when asked whether Poland should maintain diplomatic relations with North Korea, resent the relations and call it scandalous to keep ties with the country which is commonly regarded as the oppressor of many thousands of its citizens. This article also tries to answer short this question about the reason of the Polish-North Korean relations

        WIM-Based Live Load for Bridges

Andrzej S. Nowak,Przemyslaw Rakoczy 대한토목학회 2013 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.17 No.3

Calibration of the AASHTO LRFD Code required the statistical parameters of load and resistance parameters. The basic load combination includes dead load, live load and dynamic load. In 1980’s, there was no reliable Weigh-in-Motion (WIM)data base and, therefore, the development of live load factors was based on a small scale truck survey. In the meantime, the WIM technology was improved and millions of vehicles were recorded in various geographical locations. The objective of this study is to review the available WIM data of about 35 million trucks and determine the statistical parameters of Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) and live load moment. Moments were calculated for simple spans using influence lines. The span length range is from 30 to 200 ft (9 to 60 m). The Cumulative Distribution Functions (CDF) were plotted on the normal probability paper for an easier interpretation. CDF’s of GVW and moments show a considerable variation depending on WIM station location. Maximum expected values of live load depends on the considered time period and, in general, for strength limit states the time periods can be 75 or 100 years, and for service limit states they are much shorter, few days or weeks. Therefore, the statistical parameters are determined for time periods from 1 day through 100 years and for traffic volumes with ADTT from 100through 10,000. For longer time periods, the results were obtained by extrapolation of the available WIM data. The statistical analysis of moments provides a basis for the development of national live load parameters and live load factors in the bridge design code.

Growth Hormone and Aging: Updated Review

Andrzej Bartke 대한남성과학회 2019 The World Journal of Men's Health Vol.37 No.1

Role of growth hormone (GH) in mammalian aging is actively explored in clinical, epidemiological, and experimental stud-ies. The age-related decline in GH levels is variously interpreted as a symptom of neuroendocrine aging, as one of causes of altered body composition and other unwelcome symptoms of aging, or as a mechanism of natural protection from cancer and other chronic diseases. Absence of GH signals due to mutations affecting anterior pituitary development, GH secretion, or GH receptors produces an impressive extension of longevity in laboratory mice. Extension of healthspan in these animals and analysis of survival curves suggest that in the absence of GH, aging is slowed down or delayed. The corresponding endo-crine syndromes in the human have no consistent impact on longevity, but are associated with remarkable protection from age-related disease. Moreover, survival to extremely old age has been associated with reduced somatotropic (GH and insu-lin-like growth factor-1) signaling in women and men. In both humans and mice, elevation of GH levels into the supranormal (pathological) range is associated with increased disease risks and reduced life expectancy likely representing acceleration of aging. The widely advertised potential of GH as an anti-aging agent attracted much interest. However, results obtained thus far have been disappointing with few documented benefits and many troublesome side effects. Possible utility of GH in the treatment of sarcopenia and frailty remains to be explored.
