Vol.21 No.3

This paper focuses on the geographical characteristics and the spatial distributions and patterns of the road names in the new address system for which all the 183 road names of Cheongju City has been used. All 183 road names in Cheongju City and their textural information are analyzed and classified into four main categories and six divisions as sub-category. Each type is mapped and its spatial patterns are discussed in order to identify the interaction between the road name and the geographical characteristics of each type. From the discussion stated in the paper, it can be inferred that the road name is not only a representative place name in an area, but also presents an important geographical feature reflecting the toponymy of the cultural and historical backgrounds of an area. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize that for road naming, various aspects such as geographical backgrounds and characteristics should be considered. These are directly related to the publicity and utilization of the road names to the public who is still unfamiliar with the new address system to be used. Finally, various geographical topics and approaches such as toponymy and spatial analysis are proposed for further geographical research, which will contribute to the extent of geographical research scopes.

Vol.18 No.3

This paper gives an overview of the history of a round stool from the Three Kingdom period to the Chosun period. In the Three Kingdom period, a waist drum stool contracted in the middle, influenced by the seating furniture for the Pensive Bodhisattva of the Northern Wei and the Northern Qi appears as the seating furniture for the Pensive Bodhisattva in the 6th century. The round stool used during the Koryo period appears the most in the Buddhist paintings and also appears in the general paintings, the patterns of craftwork. Influenced by the Ming style furniture, the round stool of the Chosun period was used by placing it in a study or a garden, and a lacquered round stool made of wood can be seen in the general paintings. The round stool of the Koryo period is supposed to be used for the meditation of Buddhist monks or ascetics at a Buddhist temple, like that of Chinese ancient and medieval times, and the round stool of the Koryo and Chosun periods symbolizes the authority of the person who sits on it, mainly used by the ruling class.

Vol.24 No.2

In this paper, the origin, development and features of a Korean folding stool are studied. A folding stool is a piece of collapsible seating furniture with its legs crossed in the form of the letter “X” and no back attached. In China, the folding stool was introduced from the West around the second century A.D. The folding stool of Korea was influenced by that of China. It is known from the records that the king used the folding stool from the Three Kingdom period. During the Koryo period, Chosun period and the modern period, the folding stool was used to show the authority of the king and nobleman. The folding stool was also used at outside places such as a hunting ground, a ceremonial walk, a battlefield, a garden etc. due to its portableness. Buddha worship policy of Koryo period supported the usage of the folding stool for shanding (禪定) by ascetics of Buddhist temple, or aristocrats. In a contemporary period, the folding stool is continuously produced and used as one kind of a folding chair due to its functionality, movability, storability and efficient space utilization. This research will serve as a momentum to investigate the origin and development of the East Asian seating furniture culture, and contribute to the further study and manufacturing of Korean seating furniture.
