The purpose of this thesis is to examine the social means of signifying and reproducing ‘Halmeoni’ and ‘old age’ based on the politics of calling, and to create a language that is free from the restriction of such appellation by eliminating the standardized way of calling women as ‘Halmeoni’. In the current society and mass media like TV drama or commercials and films, ‘Halmeoni’ is symbolized as an asexual person and reproduced as either a woman struggling with nurture of her grandchild or a poor old woman living alone. In this context, the appellation ‘Halmeoni’ is an extension of sexual violence that can hurt others’ feelings by its subtle nuance of looking down a person or being sarcastic of old age. The name ‘Halmeoni’ actually sounds familiar and benevolent but it also implies an asexual woman stuck with motherhood to take care of her grandchild. Since women called ‘Halmeoni’ have exhausted their reproductive ability through menopause, they are symbolized as ‘failure’ and ‘atrophy’ and their sexuality is not expected or even considered to be existent. Moreover, even though the asexual person ‘Halmeoni’ has finished her direct reproduction, she is expected to act as a person who fulfills her duties related to reproduction by looking after babies reproduced by other women. This is clearly shown on TV drama or commercials where an old woman is characterized as an ideal Halmeoni striving to take care of her grandchild or she is criticized for selfishly pursuing her own life and interests rather than her grandchild. Such phenomenon is closely related to woman’s social role of reproduction and nurture in the patriarchal social orders. As old women have already established their identity living as the wife and mother in a family based on the traditional gender role, they might face difficulties in accepting socially changed forms of family and changed roles of each member over time. Calling a woman ‘Halmeoni’ is based on a double discrimination of both ‘marginalization of the old’ and ‘female discrimination’. At the bottom of this issue exists another problem of intergenerational differentiation of naming. Thus, elimination of the appellation ‘Halmeoni’ must be accompanied with eradication of sexual objectification of women and breakdown of boundaries between female generations based on ‘physical body’. The problem of symbolizing old women as ‘Halmeoni’ certainly contains issues of gender, age and class relations, and the solution to these issues is a very communication between the two genders. Therefore, there is no doubt that space of communication with marginalized groups should be arranged, and that ways to blur the borders should be found.
