α-Viniferin (AVF), a trimer of resveratrol, is known to have an anti-inflammatory effect via inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). It has been reported that up-regulated COX-2 and iNOS are expressed in colon cancer tissues of humans and rodents as well as pre-neoplastic aberrant crypt foci (ACF) of rodents. In this study, chemopreventive effects of AVF were assessed in Caco-2 cells as well as azoxymethane (AOM)-induced colorectal tumorigenesis in mice. Anti-tumor effect of AVF with regards to apoptotic induction was assessed by TUNEL and caspase-3 expression in human colon cancer Caco-2 cells. For development of ACF, AOM was administered with to mice intraperitoneally at a dose of 10 mg/kg once a week for 3 weeks. To induce colitis-related colon cancer, mice were administered a single dose of AOM (10 mg/kg) and 2% dextran sodium sulfate in drinking water. Mice treated with 0.05 and/or 0.1 mg of AVF by gavage showed significantly reduced development of ACF and colorectal tumors. Immunofluorescence detection in Caco-2 cells showed reduced COX-2 and iNOS expression, whereas cleavage of caspase-3 and apoptotic cell numbers increased upon AVF treatment. Immunostaining showed reduced expression levels of COX-2 and iNOS expression along with increased cleaved caspase-3 expression increased upon AVF treatment. These results suggest that AVF has chemopreventive effects on colorectal cancer via anti-inflammatory potential and pro-apoptotic activity.

Purpose: To evaluate clinical results after anterior plate fixation for humeral shaft fractures. Materials and Methods: We evaluated 20 patients with a humeral shaft fracture. Anterior plate fixation with anterolateral approach to the humeral shaft was performed in all cases. Time to fracture healing, presence of complications such as radial nerve injury, and range of motion of the affected shoulder and elbow joint were assessed. Results: All fractures were united and the mean healing time was 16 weeks (range, 12 week to 1 year). There were one nonunion and one postoperative radial nerve palsy. The nonuion was treated with a longer plate and bone grafting, resulting in union. The radial nerve palsy recovered at 4 months after operation. Two preoperative radial nerve injury recovered spontaneously at 6 to 8 months. The mean flexion of elbow was 125˚and mean extension was 0˚. The mean flexion of shoulder was 170˚and mean extension was 170˚. Conclusion: Internal fixation of humeral fractures using anterior plating technique is recommended as a reliable method to regain satisfactory range of motion of the elbow and shoulder. 목적: 상완골 간부 골절에서 전방 금속판 고정술을 시행한 후 치료 결과를 분석하였다. 대상 및 방법: 상완골 간부 골절 환자 20예에서 전외측 접근법을 이용하여 전방 금속판 고정술을 시행하였다. 골유합 여부와 걸린 시간, 요골신경 손상 등의 합병증 유무와 견, 주관절의 운동 범위를 분석하였다. 결과: 전 예에서 골유합을 얻었으며 유합에 걸린 시간은 평균 16주(범위, 12주-1년)였다. 합병증은 불유합 1예와 술 후 요골 신경 마비 1예가 있었다. 전자는 더 긴 금속판과 골 이식으로 유합을 얻었으며 후자는 술 후 4개월에 회복 소견을 보였다. 술 전 요골 신경 손상을 보인 2예는 6-8개월에 자발적 회복을 보였다. 견관절 평균 운동 범위는 굴곡 170˚, 외전 170˚, 내회전 90˚, 외회전 80˚였다. 주관절은 굴곡 125˚, 신전 0˚였다. 결론: 금속판 고정술을 이용한 상완골 간부 골절의 치료는 만족할 만한 견, 주관절의 운동 범위를 회복할 수 있는 좋은 치료 방법으로 추천된다.
