Glehnia littoralis (GL) is widely used as an oriental medicine for cough, fever, stroke and other disease conditions. However, the anti-cancer properties of GL on MCF-7 human breast cancer cells have not been investigated. In order to elucidate anti-cancer properties and underlying cell death mechanisms, MCF-7cells ($5{\times}10^4/well$) were treated with Glehnia littoralis root extract at 0-400 ug/ml. A hot water extract of GL root inhibited the proliferation of MCF-7 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Analysis of the cell cycle after treatment of MCF-7 cells with increasing concentrations of GL root extract for 24 hours showed significant cell cycle arrest in the G1 phase. RT-PCR and Western blot analysis both revealed that GL root extract significantly increased the expression of p21 and p27 with an accompanying decrease in both CDK4 and cyclin D1. Our reuslts indicated that GL root extract arrested the proliferation of MCF-7 cells in G1 phase through inhibition of CDK4 and cyclin D1 via increased induction of p21 and p27. In summary, the current study showed that GL could serve as a potential source of chemotherapeutic or chemopreventative agents against human breast cancer.

This paper presents a novel continuous predefined-time convergent control algorithm for higher-order systems with incompletely and completely measured states subjected to deterministic disturbances and stochastic noises. The algorithm enables a control designer to assign the convergence time as a control law parameter of in advance, regardless of initial conditions. The designed control law employs time-varying linear control input terms substituting for previously used exponential ones. The control algorithm efficiency is demonstrated by numerical simulations for a four-dimensional (4D) permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) system with incompletely and completely measured states affected by both deterministic disturbances satisfying Lipschitz conditions and stochastic white Gaussian noises. The numerical simulations confirm the algorithm efficiency in each considered case. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first attempt to design a predefined-time convergent continuous control law for higher-order systems with incompletely measurable states subjected to both deterministic disturbances satisfying Lipschitz conditions and stochastic white Gaussian noises, using a linear time-varying control input.
Effects of essential oils on biological attributes of Trichogramma galloi adults
Alcántara-de la Cruz Ricardo,Parreira Douglas Silva,Dimaté Francisco Andreas Rodríguez,Batista Lorena Duarte,Ribeiro Rafael Coelho,Zanuncio José Cola 한국응용곤충학회 2021 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.24 No.2
Bioactivity of nine essential oils (EOs) was studied on Anagasta kuehniella eggs in relation to the longevity of females, parasitism and emergence rates and sex ratio in the generations parental, F 1 and F 2 of Trichogramma galloi in comparison to a trade formulation of Azadirachta indica. There was no F 1 and F 2 progeny with Zingiber officinale being the most harmful. The greatest reductions in the parasitism rates (57, 43 and 28%) in the parental generation was caused by Allium sativum, Carapa guianensis and A. indica, respectively. In addition, A. sativum reduced the longevity (4.7 days) in the parental generation and emergence (33%) of F 1 . Tested EOs did not affect the sex ratio in the generations F 1 and F 2 and emergence in the F 2 . Allium sativum and Z. officinale were nonselective to T. galloi; while A. indica, C. guianensis and P. nigrum oils may compromise the progeny; therefore, their use must be avoided. Citrus sinensis, Mentha piperita, Origanum vulgare, Syzygium aromaticum and Thymus vulgare were selective to T. galloi, and these EOs are promising for IPM programs.

One specimen of Pteraclis aesticola was collected off San José del Cabo, Baja California Sur, México (22°54'N, 109°45'W), in March 2007. Present record is the first reported occurrence of the species in the Tropical Eastern Pacific biogeographic region (Gulf of California to southern Ecuadorian waters). Its large fan-like anal and dorsal fins and its counts of fin rays and vertebrae can distinguish the Pacific fanfish from the other species in the genus. This fish may have not yet been recorded in the region because its presence has been overlooked in the past because of rarity and lack of commercial value. Fresh and preserved (type material) specimens of the black ghost chimaera Hydrolagus melanophasma were compared for morphometric characteristics. A molecular comparison was also performed on two mitochondrial gene sequences (12S rRNA and 16S rRNA gene sequences). While significant differences in measurements were found, the differences were not attributable to sexual dimorphism or the quality of the specimens, but to the sample size and the type of statistical tests. The result of the genetic characterization showed that 12S rRNA and 16S rRNA genes represented robust molecular markers that characterized the species.

Newspaper articles are text data that record major issues or events that occur in the society we live in. Analyzing newspaper article text can derive interesting patterns of social phenomena. In this paper, topic modeling analysis was conducted by dividing the text of COVID-19-related newspaper articles by article writing period and newspaper type, and its meaning and implications were derived from a social and technical perspective. Texts of COVID-19-related articles were collected from Bigkinds, which provides news articles from various newspapers published in Korea, basic text analysis and major topics were extracted to examine major issues and countermeasures of COVID-19. The extracted topics were divided into the article writing period (2021 and 2022) and the newspaper type (national and local newspapers), and some implications were derived accordingly. First, the main topics of COVID-19-related news articles were 'political support', 'social response', 'corona quarantine', and 'overseas situation'. Second, the 'policy support' topic was widely covered in national newspapers in 2022 due to the influence of the 2022 presidential election. Third, it can be seen that local governments are more interested in support and consideration for the socially disadvantaged than the central government, and that they were also more active ahead of the presidential election. Fourth, the 'COVID-19 Quarantine' topic was more covered in local newspapers than in national newspapers. Fifth, from a technical point of view, it was expected that performing T-verification as a method of measuring the accuracy of the extracted topics could be a good technical method for optimizing topic modeling.

Bismuth tungstate Bi2W2O9 has been synthesized using diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (H5DTPA), an organic chelating agent of metals in an aqueous solution. The formation of the oxide was followed through characterization techniques such as XRD, TGA/DTA, and SEM. The optimum temperature to decompose the organic matrix and to form Bi2W2O9 was determined to be around 720 oC. Below this temperature, Bi2W2O9 was formed with a high content of Bi2WO6. At 720 oC particles of the Bi2W2O9 with a surface area four times higher than that obtained by a solid-state reaction were obtained. The oxide was tested as a photocatalyst on the degradation of aqueous solutions of rhodamine B under VIS radiation. The photodegradation of the dye followed a kinetic first order with an apparent constant, k = 2.8 × 10−3 minute−1and t1/2= 247 minutes for an aqueous solution of 5 mg l−1 of rhodamine B. Novel Low-Power High-dB Range CMOS Pseudo-Exponential Cells
Carlos Aristoteles De La Cruz Blas,Antonio Lopez-Martin 한국전자통신연구원 2006 ETRI Journal Vol.28 No.6
In this paper, novel CMOS pseudo-exponential circuits operating in a class-AB mode are presented. The pseudoexponential approximation employed is based on second order equations. Such terms are derived in a straightforward way from the inherent nonlinear currents of class-AB transconductors. The cells are appropriate to be integrated in portable equipment due to their compactness and very low power consumption. Measurement results from a fabricated prototype in a 0.5 μm technology reveal a range of 45 dB with errors lower than ±0.5 dB, a power consumption of 100 μW, and an area of 0.01 mm2.
