CoFe2O4(CoFO)/Pt/Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 (PZT) multilayer films were grown on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Sisubstrates. A thin Pt layer was inserted between the ferrimagnetic and the ferroelectric layersin order to suppress diffusion at high temperatures and thereby to prevent possible interfacialreactions. The effect of annealing on the film’s microstructure and multiferroic properties was theninvestigated using thin film stacks heat-treated at temperatures ranging from 550 to 650 C. Themagnetoelectric coefficients were calculated from the magnetoelectric voltages measured using amagnetoelectric measurement system. The effect of annealing temperature on the magnetoelectriccoupling in the CoFO/Pt/PZT multilayer thin film is discussed in detail.

Primary venous thrombosis caused by deficiency or qualitative abnormality of antithrombin Ⅲ, protein C and protein S is usually inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Usually, deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary thromboembolism is developed by such abnormalities, however, mesenteric vein thrombosis is rarely reported. A 27-year-old man with previous history of deep vein thrombosis underwent segmental resection of jejunum due to mesenteric vein thrombosis complicated by necrosis of jejunum. Postoperative investigation disclosed combined deficiency of antithrombin Ⅲ and protein C. His son also showed deficiency of antithrombin Ⅲ. Postoperatively, he is on life-long warfarin therapy without experiencing recurrence of venous thrombosis.

Magnetic/ferroelectric multilayer thin films using PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 (PZT) and two different magneticmaterials, i.e., Terfenol-D and CuFe2O4 (CuFO) layers, were fabricated, and their magnetoelectric(ME) coupling behavior was investigated. The PZT layer was first coated ontoPt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate by sol-gel spin coating method. Pt layer, which served as an electrode anda diffusion barrier, was grown on the PZT layer by using the ion-beam sputtering method. The MEvoltage coefficients were calculated from the ME voltage data measured utilizing a magnetoelectrictest system. The Terfenol-D/Pt/PZT films were found to show a higher in-plane ME voltage coefficientthan that the CuFO/Pt/PZT films due primarily to the higher magnetostriction coefficientof Terfenol-D.

Cytokine-induced apoptosis inhibitor 1 (CIAPIN1), known as an anti-apoptotic and signal-transduction protein, plays a pivotal role in a variety of biological processes. However, the role of CIAPIN1 in inflammation is unclear. We investigated the protective effects of CIAPIN1 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-exposed Raw 264.7 cells and against inflammatory damage induced by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) in a mouse model using cell-permeable Tat-CIAPIN1. Transduced Tat-CIAPIN1 significantly reduced ROS production and DNA fragmentation in LPS-exposed Raw 264.7 cells. Also, Tat- CIAPIN1 inhibited MAPKs and NF-κB activation, reduced the expression of Bax, and cleaved caspase-3, COX-2, iNOS, IL-6, and TNF-α in LPS-exposed cells. In a TPA-induced animal model, transduced Tat-CIAPIN1 drastically decreased inflammation damage and inhibited COX-2, iNOS, IL-6, and TNF-α expression. Therefore, these findings suggest that Tat-CIAPIN1 might lead to a new strategy for the treatment of inflammatory skin disorders. [BMB Reports 2019; 52(12): 695-699]

Extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) is usually indolent. Although it was reported recently that about 20-30% cases of MALT lymphoma presented with a disseminated disease at diagnosis, it was described as a disease localized at diagnosis and remaining stable for a prolonged period. However, only a few cases of MALT lymphoma involved the lung and gastrointestinal tract all at once. We report a case of a 73-year-old man with disseminated MALT lymphoma. He presented with non-productive cough, initial chest radiograph showed a nodule in the right lower lobe. The diagnosis of stage IV MALT lymphoma was made by CT scan, video-assisted thoracoscopic excisional biopy, gastrofiberscopic biopsy and bone marrow biopsy. The lymphoma involved the lung, stomach and bone marrow at the time of diagnosis. Because he refused chemotherapy, he discharged after Helicobacter pylori eradication without chemotherapy. Regular follow-up examination did not show any evidence of disease progression over 22 months. (Tuberc Respir Dis 2006; 61: 171-177)

Purpose: High-dose radiotherapy (RT) for localized prostate cancer requires careful consideration of target position changes and adjacent organs-at-risk (OARs), such as the rectum and bladder. Therefore, daily monitoring of target position and OAR changes is crucial in minimizing interfractional dosimetric uncertainties. For efficient monitoring of the internal condition of patients, we assessed the feasibility of an auto-segmentation of OARs on the daily acquired images, such as megavoltage computed tomography (MVCT), via a commercial artificial intelligence (AI)-based solution in this study. Materials and Methods: We collected MVCT images weekly during the entire course of RT for 100 prostate cancer patients treated with the helical TomoTherapy system. Based on the manually contoured body outline, the bladder including prostate area, and rectal balloon regions for the 100 MVCT images, we trained the commercially available fully convolutional (FC)-DenseNet model and tested its auto-contouring performance. Results: Based on the optimally determined hyperparameters, the FC-DenseNet model successfully auto-contoured all regions of interest showing high dice similarity coefficient (DSC) over 0.8 and a small mean surface distance (MSD) within 1.43 mm in reference to the manually contoured data. With this well-trained AI model, we have efficiently monitored the patient’s internal condition through six MVCT scans, analyzing DSC, MSD, centroid, and volume differences. Conclusion: We have verified the feasibility of utilizing a commercial AI-based model for auto-segmentation with low-quality daily MVCT images. In the future, we will establish a fast and accurate auto-segmentation and internal organ monitoring system for efficiently determining the time for adaptive replanning.
