        Promoter Analysis of Bombyx mori Nucleopolyhedrovirus Ubiquitin Gene

        The aim of this study was to analyze the characteristics of Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) ubiquitin gene promoter and the effects of conserved motifs, such as TAAG, TATA, and CAAT, along with baculovirus enhancer homologous region 3 (hr3), on promoter activity. Ubiquitin gene of BmNPV was expressed during the late phase of virus infection. In the presence of viral factors, significant reduction of promoter activity was observed by deletion of -382 to -124 bp upstream of ATG. The fragment between -187 and -383 bp upstream of ATG, including distal TAAG, CAAT motif, and TATA box, could also drive expression of the reporter gene. The mutation of cis-elements TATA boxes and TAAG motifs significantly decreased the promoter’s activity, while CAAT mutations enhanced promoter activity by 2- or 3-fold, as compared with the native promoter. In the presence of BmNPV, hr3, both located downstream of the reporter gene of the same vector, and separate vector, could significantly enhance transcription activity of ubiquitin promoter as compared to the control. We concluded that BmNPV ubiquitin gene might be regulated by dual sets of promoter elements, where TAAG and TATA box may positively regulate the expression of ubiquitin, while CAAT motif functions as a negative regulator. Viral factor(s) play an important role in the co-activation of hr3 and promoter.

        Cloning, Expression, and Functional Characterization of the Dunaliella salina 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate Synthase Gene in Escherichia coli

        5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSP synthase, EC 2.5.1.19) is the sixth enzyme in the shikimate pathway which is essential for the synthesis of aromatic amino acids and many secondary metabolites. The enzyme is widely involved in glyphosate tolerant transgenic plants because it is the primary target of the nonselective herbicide glyphosate. In this study, the Dunaliella salina EPSP synthase gene was cloned by RT-PCR approach. It contains an open reading frame encoding a protein of 514 amino acids with a calculated molecular weight of 54.6 KDa. The derived amino acid sequence showed high homology with other EPSP synthases. The Dunaliella salina EPSP synthase gene was expressed in Escherichia coli and the recombinant EPSP synthase were identified by functional complementation assay.

        A novel bispidinone analog induces S-phase cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in HeLa human cervical carcinoma cells

        <P>2,4,6,8-(3)-Tetranitrophenyl-3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-9-one (B16), a bispidinone analog, was synthesized to investigate its effects on cell viability, the cell cycle, and apoptotic pathways in HeLa human cervical cancer cells. B16 decreased the percentage of viable cells in WST-8 assays, and morphological changes associated with apoptotic cell death were observed, including cell shrinkage and disruption. Annexin V-FITC/PI dual staining assays showed that B16 significantly increased the early apoptosis of HeLa cells after 24 h of treatment. Moreover, DNA content analysis and [3H]-thymidine incorporation assays showed that B16 induced S-phase cell cycle arrest and inhibited DNA replication after 24 h of treatment. Following treatment with 25 ?M of B16, an increase in reactive oxygen species and a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential were observed by flow cytometry. In addition, the expression levels of caspase cascade and Bcl-2 family proteins determined by western blotting suggested that the induction of apoptosis by B16 was associated with a caspase- and mitochondrial-dependent pathway in HeLa cells. In conclusion, B16 induced early apoptosis and S-phase cell cycle arrest in HeLa cells via a caspase- and mitochondrial?dependent pathway.</P>

        A Routing Metric to Improve Route Stability in Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks

        The hop count routing metric is widely used in routing protocols of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) due to its simplicity and effectiveness. With a lower hop count route, fewer transmissions are required to send a packet from the source to the destination. This can improve the throughput of a network because fewer transmissions results in less channel contention and interference. Despite this, the hop count routing metric may not be ideal for mobile scenarios where the topology of a network changes constantly and rapidly. In this paper, we propose to increase route stability in mobile WSNs by discovering paths that are more stable during route discoveries using routing metrics. Two routing metrics were proposed, the true beauty of these routing metrics lies in the fact that they can even be used even without specialized hardware such as GPS and other sensors. We implemented the proposed routing metrics in the AODV routing protocol and found that they are highly effective and outperform other stability-based routing metrics and the hop count routing metric.

        Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance of Heterojunction BiOI/BiOIO3 Nanocomposites Under Simulated Solar Light

        Novel heterostructure BiOI/BiOIO3 nanocomposites were successfully prepared through a facile deposition method at room temperature. BiOIO3 is a noncentrosymmetric compound that has an internal self-built electric field. BiOI was applied as a visible light absorber to sensitize semiconductors owing to its smallest bandgap. The coupling between BiOIO3 and BiOI can combine their advantages and improve photocatalytic properties. Compared with the single BiOI and BiOIO3, the heterostructure BiOI/BiOIO3 nanocomposites displayed a significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for the Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation. The enhanced photocatalytic performance is deduced closely related to the formation of BiOI/BiOIO3 heterojunction interface whose presence is regarded to be a favorable factor for the transfer and separation of the photogenerated electrons and holes.

        朝鮮使者眼中的淸代戱曲

        본고는 조선시기 『燕行錄』중의 희곡 관련 자료를 연구대상으로 하여, 이국자의 시각으로 본 청대 희곡의 연극 활동 상황을 고찰하여 본다. 본고는 우선 『燕行錄』중에 청대 희곡의 연출 환경에 대한 묘사를 검토 분석하고, 그 다음 희곡 연출 복식에 대한 조선 사신들의 관심에 대해 논술하고, 마지막으로 『燕行錄』에 기록된 희곡 극목에 근거하여 청대 민간 희곡과 궁정 희곡의 분야를 서술해보려고 한다. 이런 보기드문 희곡 자료에 대한 정리를 통해 청대 희곡 연구의 시야를 넓혀보려고 한다. The research object of this paper is the Chinese Opera materials that are contained in YanXingLu (Travelogues of Korean Envoys to China). The activities of the Chinese opera are depicted through the perspective of Li Dynasty`s scholars. Firstly, I will analyze the environment of the performance recorded by the Korean envoys. Secondly, I will explain the reason that Korean scholars pay attention to the costume of the Chinese Opera. Finally, I will illustrate the differences between the folk drama and the palace opera. We could expand our research sight on the Qing Dynasty Opera by analyzing these ancient art works.

        A Comparison of Transradial and Transfemoral Percutaneous Coronary Intervention in Chinese Women Based on a Propensity Score Analysis

        Background and Objectives: Over the past decades, transradial approach for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has been increasingly adopted in clinical practice. Women represent a large population who will possibly benefit from PCI, but they are often under-represented in clinical studies. Therefore, the role of TRI in women remains to be further defined. This study sought to compare safety and efficacy for transradial intervention (TRI) and transfemoral intervention (TFI) in women undergoing PCI in China. Methods: The study population consisted of 5,067 women undergoing PCI at Fuwai Hospital, Beijing, China between 2006 and 2011 (TRI: n=4,105, TFI: n=962). Incidence rates of clinical outcomes during hospitalization and at 1-year follow-up were compared between TRI and TFI. In order to minimize potential biases, a 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) was performed. A total of 899 pairs were matched. Results: Baseline and procedural characteristics were well-balanced between TRI and TFI groups after controlling for confounders using PSM. TRI was associated with reduced major post-PCI bleeding (odds ratio [OR], 0.64; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.54–0.76; p<0.001) and access site complications (OR, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.61–0.74; p<0.001) after PSM. There was no statistical differences in the incidence rates of major adverse cardiac events (a composite of cardiac death, myocardial infarction, and target vessel revascularization) both during hospitalization and at 1-year follow-up (p>0.05). Conclusions: In this propensity score-based analysis of TRI versus TFI in Chinese women, TRI showed advantages of safety and feasibility over TFI. A wider adoption of TRI in women has the potential to improve outcomes in treatment of coronary artery diseases.

        일반논문 : 조선 사신들의 관점에서 본 심양과 그 문화적 특징

        산해관의 북쪽에 위치한 심양은 성경 혹은 봉천으로도 불리며, 중국의 유명한 역사적 도시로 일컬어진다. 청 정부가 조선과 외교관계를 맺은 후 심양은 조선 사신들이 북경으로 향하는 육로였다. 또한 심양은 몇 사신들에게는 그 자체로 목적지가 되기도 하였다. 여행 일지에서 사신들은 심양을 다양한 모습으로 그리고 있다. 한예로 사신들은 산문시를 통하여 심양의 현실과 역사를 객관적으로 반영하였다. 또한 시를 써서 복잡한 심정을 표출하기도 하였다. 이 기록들은 귀중한 가치를 지니고 있는데 그 이유는 중국의 역사 기록에서 찾을 수 없는 역사와 현실을 반영하고 있기때문이다. 또한 조선 사신들의 내부 세계를 표출하기도 한다. 본고는 조선 사신들이 심양을 방문하여 기록한 여행일지의 분석을 통하여 심양에 대해 조선 사신들이 가지고 있던 상을 조사하고자 한다. 이 기록들은 임기정씨가 편집한 ≪연행록전집≫과 그 외 필자가 중국, 한국 그리고 일본에서 수집한 여든권을 포함한다. 본고의 결론은 다음과 같다: 17세기 초반과 중반의 조선 사신들은 청 정부에 대한 증오와 혐오로 인하여 중국을 방문한 심양을 전반적으로 경멸하여 호 사람들로 가득한 더러운 곳으로 여겼다. 시간이 흘러 역사적 아픔이 감소하면서 17세기 후반에서 18세기 초반의 조선 사신들은 심양에 관심을 가지기 시작했다. 사신들은 도시에서 보고 느낀 바를 대량으로 기록하여 두었다. 심양에 대한 이들은 태도는 점차 변화하였다: 1.심양은 무구한 역사를 가지고 있었다. 2.심양은 조선 사심들이 슬픔과 굴욕감을 느낀 장소였다. 3.심양은 번영하고 기획된 도시였다. 4.심양은 부처가 숭배되는 장소였다. 심양에 대한 조선 사신들의 태도가 바뀐 것은 양국 관계의 흐름을 명확히 대변하고 있다. 특히 청 정부에 대한 조선의 태도가 변하였다: 온전히 적대적인 관계로 시작하여 청 왕조의 안정적인 발전에 관심을 두고자 하지 않았고 마지막으로 양국의 학자들을 받아들이고 교류하기에 이르렀다. 따라서 심양을 향한 조선 사신들의 심적 변화는 양국 관계를 이해하는데 중요한 역할을 수행한다. 역사적 도시인 심양은 한중 관계를 연구하는 핵심적인 참조 대상인 것이다. Lying in the north of Sanhaegwan, Sim yang - also called Seong Gyeong or Bongcheon - is a famous historical city in China. After the Qing government established diplomatic relations with Joseon, Sim yang was on the Joseon envoys` land route to Peking. Also, Sim yang city was itself the final destination of many of the envoys. In the records of their journeys, the envoys described Sim yang in various ways. For example, they used prose to objectively reflect the reality and history of Sim yang; they also used poetry in order to focus on complex feelings. These records have great value because they reflect a history and reality that cannot be found in Chinese historical files. Also, they reveal the inner world of the Joseon envoys themselves. This article attempts to investigate the image that the Joseon envoys had of Sim yang, through a careful analysis of the descriptions the envoys made of Sim yang city in the records of their journeys. These records include Yeon Haeng Rok Jeon Jip edited by Mr Im gijung, and eighty other travel diaries which were collected in China, Korea and Japan by the author. The conclusion of this article is: During the early and middle 17th century, out of the hatred and detestation toward the Qing Dynasty, Joseon envoys who travelled to China generally felt contemptuous of Sim yang, regarding it as a dirty place occupied by Ho peoples. As the historic pains faded away with the elapse of time, Joseon envoys in late 17th century and early 18th century began to pay attention to the City. They recorded a large amount of what they had seen and felt in the City. Their attitude towards Sim yang changed gradually: 1.Sim yang had an extensive history. 2. Sim yang was a place where the Joseon envoys felt sad and humiliated. 3. Sim yang was a prosperous, well-designed city. 4. Sim yang was a place where Buddha was worshipped. The shift of Joseon envoys` attitude toward Sim yang also clearly revealed the general trend of the two countries` relationship. Especially, Joseon envoys` attitude towards the Qing government was changed: from complete hostility at the beginning, to unwillingness to see the stable development of the Qing Dynasty, and finally to the mutual acceptance of and communication between the two countries` scholars. Therefore, the changing attitude of Joseon envoys toward Sim yang was an important token of the two countries` relationship. Sim yang, this historical city, has crucial reference value in the research of Sino-Korean relations.

        Five new anthraquinones from the seed of Cassia obtusifolia

        A phytochemical investigation on the seeds ofCassia obtusifolia led to the isolation of five new anthraquinones,including one aglycon and four glycosides. Thestructures were elucidated by analysis of extensive spectroscopicdata and the results of acid hydrolysis. All theseisolates were evaluated for their inhibitory effects againsta-glucosidase, and 1 showed potent activity with IC50value of 185 ± 15 lM.
