A new red butterhead lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) with transverse broad elliptic, red leaves, ‘Sun Red Butter’, with late bolting and high yield, was developed from a cross between ‘Jajusangchu’ (red leaf color and half crisp) and ‘Dukseomjeokchukmyeon’ (high yield). The crossing and selection for advanced lines was previously carried out using the pedigree method during the period 2001-2009. The advanced lines were evaluated for yield and adaptability at several locations in Korea (Gangwon-do, Gyeonggi-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, Jeollabuk-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, and Jeju-do) in 2011. The type of matured stage is early and medium butterhead lettuce. The shelf life of ‘Sun Red Butter’ was four weeks longer than that of ‘Germania’ at 4°C. The anthocyanin content of ‘Sun Red Butter’ was lower than that of ‘Germania’ at 11.2 mg/100 g. The BSL (latucin+8-deoxylactucin+lactucopicrin) content of ‘Sun Red Butter’ was higher than that of ‘Germania’ at 32.8 μg/g, DW. The marketable yield of ‘Sun Red Butter’ was higher than that of ‘Germania’ by 67% (at 621.4 g per plant), and ‘Sun Red Butter’ showed a particularly improved yield under high-temperature cultivation in the field. Furthermore, ‘Sun Red Butter’ had better taste characteristics and was crisper and sweeter than ‘Germania’. Therefore, we recommend that the new cultivar ‘Sun Red Butter’ would be suitable for cultivation in spring and fall. Furthermore, this new cultivar could be harvested in a single harvest, as in a head lettuce, and could therefore be managed more efficiently and economically by farmers.

Introduction: The enlargement and deformation of the orbit give rise to a visible enophthalmos. As a consequence, a disturbance of eye motility together with double images is likely to occur. This study examined the degree of enophthalmos according to the extent of orbital wall fracture and volume of herniated orbital tissue in blowout fractures of the medial and inferior orbital wall. Materials and Methods: This study was performed on patients diagnosed with medial and inferior orbital wall fractures at the Department of Oral and maxillofacial surgery, Chonbuk National University Hospital from 2007 to 2009. The patients age, gender, etiology of fracture and degree of enophthalmos were investigated. The changes in the degree of enophthalomos, diplopia and ocular motility restriction after operation were examined. Results: The degree of enophthalomos increased with increasing extent of orbital wall fracture and volume of herniated orbital tissue. Conclusion: Whether to perform the operation is decided after measuring the extent of the orbital wall fracture and volume of herniated orbital tissue using computed tomography (CT), time for the decision of operation can be shortened. This can cause a decrease in the complications of orbital wall fractures.

Makgeolli, also known as Takju, is a non-filtered traditional Korean alcoholic beverage that contains various floating matter, including yeast cells, which contributes to its high physiological functionality. In the present study, we assessed the levels of β-glucan and glutathione in various yeast strains isolated from traditional Korean Nuruk and selected a β-glucan- and glutathionerich yeast strain to add value to Makgeolli by enhancing its physiological functionality through increased levels of these compounds. Yeast β-glucan levels ranged from 6.26% to 32.69% (dry basis) and were strongly species-dependent. Dried Saccharomyces cerevisiae isolated from Nuruk contained 25.53 μg/mg glutathione, 0.70 μg/mg oxidized glutathione, and 11.69 μg/ g and 47.85 μg/g spermidine and L-ornithine monohydrochloride, respectively. To produce functional Makgeolli, a β-glucan- and glutathione-rich yeast strain was selected in a screening analysis. Makgeolli fermented with the selected yeast strain contained higher β-glucan and glutathione levels than commercial Makgeolli. Using the selected yeast strain to produce Makgeolli with high β-glucan and glutathione content may enable the production of functional Makgeolli.

Stand structure and spatial associations of the dominant tree species in Quercus mongolica stands were investigated to understand interspecific relationships and the persistent dominance of Q. mongolica. We examined the species composition, DBH (diameter at breast height) distribution, and spatial distribution of trees (${\geq}\;2.5\;cm$ DBH) in two permanent $100\;m\;{\times}\;100\;m$ plots in Q. mongolica-dominant stands on the western part of Mt. Jiri. Ripley's K-function was used to characterize the spatial patterns and associations of dominant tree species. Q. mongolica showed a continuous and reverse-J shaped DBH distribution with clumped spatial distribution in both study sites. Q. mongolica and Abies koreana exhibited a negative association implying potential interspecific competition. The positive spatial association between Q. mongolica and Alnus hirsuta var. sibirica and Fraxinus sieboldiana were affected by site characteristics: limited habitat conditions with a large proportion of rock surface. Our results suggest that interactions among species were complex and ranged from positive to negative. Differences in stand and site characteristics and regeneration mechanisms among the species play an important role in regulating their spatial distribution patterns, while competition between individuals also contributes to spatial patterning of these communities. The high density and the early developmental stage of spatial distribution and structural characteristics of Q. mongolica and the relatively low importance values of other species in the stands imply that Q. mongolica will remain dominant in the study sites in the near future.

Background/Aims: Selecting patients with an urgent need for endoscopic hemostasis is difficult based only on simple parameters of presumed acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding. This study assessed easily applicable factors to predict cases in need of urgent endoscopic hemostasis due to acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Methods: The consecutively included patients were divided into the endoscopic hemostasis and nonendoscopic hemostasis groups. We reviewed the enrolled patients’ medical records and analyzed various variables and parameters for acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding outcomes such as demographic factors, comorbidities, symptoms, signs, laboratory findings, rebleeding rate, and mortality to evaluate simple predictive factors for endoscopic treatment. Results: A total of 613 patients were analyzed, including 329 patients in the endoscopic hemostasis and 284 patients in the non-endoscopic hemostasis groups. In the multivariate analysis, a bloody nasogastric lavage (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 6.786; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.990 to 11.543; p < 0.0001) and a hemoglobin level less than 8.6 g/dL (AOR, 1.768; 95% CI, 1.028 to 3.039; p = 0.039) were independent predictors for endoscopic hemostasis. Significant differences in the morbidity rates of endoscopic hemostasis were detected between the group with no predictive factors and the group with one or more predictive factors (OR, 2.677; 95% CI, 1.920 to 3.733; p < 0.0001). Conclusions: A bloody nasogastric lavage and hemoglobin < 8.6 g/dL were independent predictors of endoscopic hemostasis in patients with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

DEPs (diesel exhaust particles) like any other particles can be also inhaled into lung to participate in a damaging reaction to the organ. Possible damages might be apoptosis and inflammatory responses to the cells in respiratory track. The aim of this study was cytotoxicity evaluation of DEPs from five in-use diesel vehicles using a murine macrophage cell (RAW 254.7). We found that most DEPs have a considerable cytotoxicity compared to the control and SRM 2975. When measured by MIT assay and extents of apoptosis, DEPs of two high-mileage vehicles had higher toxicity than those of the other three low-mileage vehicles tested. Although mRNA expression level of TNF-α. somewhat explains the trend of cytotoxicity and apoptosis, that of IL-1β did not. Correlation studies among the extents of MIT assay, apoptosis, and TNF-α. expression showed that the extents between apoptosis and TNF-α expression was most highly correlated (r=0.96). These results suggest that cytotoxicity of various DEPs could be compared easily by measuring the extent of apoptosis or TNF-α expression by DEPs.
