Purpose: This study aimed to conduct a systematic literature review and meta-analysis of the exercise intervention effects for the prevention of musculoskeletal injuries in military personnel. Methods: Among studies that included military personnel as participants, we identified randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and cluster-RCT studies that used exercise interventions as a method for injury prevention. Exercise encompassed all types of physical activity, and the effect size was determined by the ratio of injuries between groups. Literature searches were conducted with search terms modified to ensure common inclusion of keywords such as “Soldier,” “Injury prevention,” and “Exercise.” For the analysis of potential factors, variables selected for group differentiation included gender, risk of bias, exercise volume, injury location, exercise type, and study design. Results: Among a total of 8,598 search results, 10 papers were finally confirmed. The meta-analysis of all 10 papers showed that there was no statistically significant injury prevention effect, and significant heterogeneity was observed among the studies (incidence rate ratio, 0.82; 95% confidence interval, 0.62-1.09, I2=83%). Subgroup analysis revealed a significant 44% reduction in injuries in studies where exercise volume for injury prevention was relatively high. However, no significant injury prevention effects were observed in other potential factors between groups. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the effectiveness of injury prevention exercises in military settings was not statistically significant. However, through the analysis of potential factors, it was confirmed that increasing the time spent on injury prevention exercises may have a preventive effect on injuries.

Non-pneumatic tires(NPTs) can be manufactured with a viscoelastic material characterized by low energy loss due to the relatively high freedom of selection of materials using a simple manufacturing method. For this reason, NPTs have low rolling resistance compared with pneumatic tires in the material aspects. NPTs, which consist of flexible spokes, are still at an early stage of research and development, and it is necessary to study NPTs to improve the rolling resistance structurally. In this paper, the optimization of spokes with honeycomb cellular structures is performed to minimize rolling resistance by using the design of experiment(DOE) and finite element method. The DOE is conducted with a steady state rolling(SSR) analysis to determine the effects of four design variables on the rolling resistance: the cellular thickness(t1, t2, t3) and the radius of curvature of cellular(R). Optimum design variables are determined from the analysis of means(ANOM). Sensitivity information of design variables is evaluated via the analysis of variance(ANOVA).

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify the stepping cadence patterns in Korean adults by using objectively measured accelerometer data to analyze the time spent in each cadence category by sex and age. METHODS: During the 2014-2015 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1,703 males and females aged 19-64 years provided at least 1 valid day of data (wearing an accelerometer ≥10 hr/d). The mean cumulative time and percentage per day in 8 cadence categories (0, 1-19, 20-29, 30-59, 60-79, 80-99, 100-119, and ≥120 steps/min) by sex and age group were calculated. RESULTS: Cumulative time and percentage per day decreased across the incremental cadence categories. Participants spent 360.08±2.56 min/d in the non-movement cadence category and 361.50±2.28 min/d in the incidental movement cadence category. However, they spent only about 18.1 min/d (2.1%) at ≥100 steps/min. Males spent significantly more time in the cadence categories of sporadic movement, purposeful steps, slow walking, and medium walking, but the other categories, except for brisk walking, had higher values in females (p<0.001). The older age group spent less time in non-movement cadence categories, and the youngest and oldest groups spent more time at a higher cadence (≥100 steps/min) than the other age groups. Similar patterns were found in a subgroup analysis by sex. CONCLUSIONS: Korean adults spent most of their time at a low cadence and only a few minutes at a high cadence (≥100 steps/min); this trend was consistent across sex and age groups.

Purpose: This study was performed to investigate the association between step volume and intensity with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) in Korean adults. Methods: The study analyzed 2,038 adults from the 2014 to 2017 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, defining MS based on waist circumference, blood pressure, triglycerides, glucose, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterols. Step volume and intensity were calculated using average number of steps per day and peak 30-minute cadence, respectively. Logistic regression analysis was used to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of MS by tertiles of step volume and intensity. A joint analysis was conducted to examine the combined association between step volume and intensity with the prevalence of MS. We divided the participants into nine groups according to their step volume (tertiles) and intensity (tertiles). Results: There were 478 MS cases. Compared to the lowest tertile of volume, the ORs of MS were 1.06 (95% CI, 0.79–1.42) and 0.64 (95% CI, 0.47–0.88) in the middle and highest tertile of volume. Compared to the lowest tertile of intensity, the ORs were 1.02 (95% CI, 0.76–1.36) and 0.74 (95% CI, 0.55–1.01) in the middle and highest tertile of intensity. In the joint analysis, compared to the group with both lowest volume and intensity, the ORs were significantly lower in all groups with the highest volume, except the group with the lowest intensity. Conclusion: Although only greater step volume, not intensity, was independently related to MS, both step volume and intensity appear to be important for preventing MS.

In this study, ethanol organosolv lignin (EOL) yield and structural characteristics of EOL depending on the production condition were evaluated to understand the lignin fractionation behavior and to determine the optimal condition for the production of phenolic compounds. EOL yield was enlarged until combined severity factor (CSF) reached 1.2, while molecular weight and nitrobenzene oxidation (NBO) yield of EOL were declined more than a half compare to those from CSF 0 to 0.6. Both EOL and NBO yields were predictable as a function of CSF with very high coefficient of determination. Concentration of phenolic compounds released from pyrolysis GC/MS was relatively stable until reaching CSF 1.5. However, it was significantly affected by not only CSF but also the concentration of acid used for the fractionation of EOL. Therefore, in order to produce phenolic compounds from EOL, production condition should be controlled between CSF 1.2 and 1.5 with low acid concentration.
