      • Females and Barriers to Work-Family Balance: A Case Study of Casino Dealers

        ( Grace,Suk Ha Chan ),( Perry,Yun Kit Ip ),( Fei Fei Lin ),( Xi Chen ) 한국문화관광학회 2018 문화관광연구 Vol.20 No.1

A positive work-family balance (WFB) can enhance service quality and facilitate job satisfaction among staff members, thereby reducing absenteeism and turnover rate. Female participation in hospitality is one of the significant changes in the last century. Significant progress has been achieved by women with their increase movements in their occupations. The proportion of female dealers in Macau has increased. If females spend additional time in their job, they will often spend less time for their family and social life. This condition is often considered ‘win-lose’ outcomes and hardly achieves WFB. This study investigates the features of quality WFB of female dealers in a casino hotel in Macau. Long work hours, shift duties, demanding customers and a stressful environment are taken-for-granted in the casino business and could lead to an unbalanced WFB. This qualitative study involves face-to-face interviews with 25 casino hotel female dealers from five major large casino hotels in Macau. Content analysis is used to elaborate the female employees’ perception of WFB and identify the challenges and barriers in achieving WFB. Findings show that human resources should provide additional support to eliminate the concern of females in balancing their family and job security. Recommendations will be formulated in the study.

Morphometric evaluation of great vein of Galen and its clinical implications

        Grace Suganya. S(Grace Suganya. S ),Ariharan. K(Ariharan. K ),Raveendranath Veeramani(Raveendranath Veeramani ),Dinesh Kumar. V(Dinesh Kumar. V ),Nagarajan Krishnan(Nagarajan Krishnan ) 대한해부학회 2023 Anatomy & Cell Biology Vol.56 No.1

The Galenic venous system plays a vital role in the drainage of blood from deeper parts of the brain. This venous system is contributed by many major veins. These veins are located closer to the pineal gland making the surgical approach in this region difficult. Any accidental injury or occlusion of the vein of Galen could lead to devasting results. Thus, studying the dimensions of the vein of Galen is more important. Hence, we aimed to evaluate the morphometry and trajectory to the vein of Galen. About 100 computed tomographic venography records were evaluated and the length, diameter of vein of Galen, angle between straight sinus and vein of Galen and distance from internal occipital protuberance and roof of fourth ventricle to vein of Galen were studied. The mean length and diameter of vein of Galen were 9.8±2.7 and 4.08±1.04 respectively. The mean angle between straight sinus and vein of Galen was 64.2°. The mean distance between external occipital protuberance and roof of fourth ventricle to vein of Galen were 52±6.9 and 33.3±4.5 respectively. No significant morphometric differences were observed between the age groups as well as between the sexs. The results obtained from this study may be helpful for the neurosurgeons in better understanding of the anatomy of the Galenic venous system and to adopt a safe surgical approach to improve the efficacy of the surgeries of the pineal gland and also in the region of vein of Galen.

Oral Loading of Phenobarbital to Achieve Therapeutic Effects in Pediatric Patients with Acute Repetitive Seizures

        Jemima Grace D. Fronda(Jemima Grace D. Fronda ),Mel Michel G. Villaluz(Mel Michel G. Villaluz ),Cristina M. Cruz-Urbi(Cristina M. Cruz-Urbi ) 대한소아신경학회 2022 대한소아신경학회지 Vol.31 No.1

Purpose: Intravenous phenobarbital has not been available at our institution since 2019. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of oral phenobarbital loading at a dose of 15 to 20 mg/kg to achieve therapeutic serum levels and clinical seizure control in pediatric patients with acute repetitive seizures. Methods: This is a retrospective single-center review of the medical records of pediatric patients admitted for acute repetitive seizures (from January 2019 to June 2022) at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center who were given an oral phenobarbital loading dose of 15 to 20 mg/kg with serum level measurements taken within 48 hours after oral loading. Results: Eleven patients were given a single oral phenobarbital loading dose of 15 to 20 mg/kg, while 14 were given two doses of 10 mg/kg 12 hours apart. All 25 patients achieved therapeutic serum levels within 48 hours post-loading. Higher serum levels were seen at 48 hours (median, 19.8 μg/mL at 24 hours vs. 24.4 μg/mL at 48 hours). This difference was statistically significant at 5% (P=0.023), and the majority achieved adequate seizure control without requiring additional anti-seizure medications (76%). Transient drowsiness was the most commonly documented adverse effect. Conclusion: Oral loading of phenobarbital at a dose of 15 to 20 mg/kg given as a single dose or in two divided doses is an effective and safe alternative to achieve therapeutic serum levels and adequate clinical seizure control at 24 hours post-loading. This may be a promising and useful intervention at centers without available intravenous phenobarbital.

Toward a Ditransitive Prototype:The Gradience of English Ditransitives

        Grace Ge-Soon Moon 한국영어학학회 2014 영어학연구 Vol.20 No.3

Moon, Grace Ge-Soon. 2014. Toward a Ditransitive Prototype: The Gradienceof English Ditransitives. English Language and Linguistics 20.3, 115-134. Ditransitive constructions in English display a wide variation in acceptability judgments. Thepresent paper attempts to account for this variation within the framework of prototype theory. Specifically, it proposes a ditransitive prototype based on both the semantic features identified in previous research as relevant to prototypicaltransitivity and the properties that characterize the canonical ditransitive verb give.Arguing that the acceptability of ditransitive constructions is a reflex of theirpoximity to the proposed ditransitive prototype, the paper demonstrates that the"ditransitivity" of a given clause is determined by an interplay between the objectiveproperties of the clause itself and the speaker's subjective construal of the event described in the clause.

Spatial and Temporal Trends in High Resolution Gridded Temperature Data over India

        Grace Nengzouzam,Sanayanbi Hodam,Arnab Bandyopadhyay,Aditi Bhadra 한국기상학회 2019 Asia-Pacific Journal of Atmospheric Sciences Vol.55 No.4

The changing temperature, directly and indirectly, has significant effect on the agricultural production and economy of the country which necessitates detailed study of the spatial and temporal variability of temperature. This paper focuses on the spatio-temporal trend analysis of minimum and maximum temperature over India. Daily gridded temperature data with spatial resolution of 1° × 1° for the period of 1969–2005 were analysed using Mann-Kendall (MK) non-parametric test at 3 levels of significances, namely, 1%, 5%, and 10%. The diurnal temperature range was also analysed. Results showed that maximum temperature experienced significant decreasing trends in the entire Indo-Gangetic plains extending up to the NE region while the Southern region experienced warming. For minimum temperature, all regions except the Central region reported increasing trends indicating warming. As a result, diurnal temperature range showed decreasing trends in many places in the upper half of the country while the lower half is dominated by increasing trends. On a regional scale, the Southern region, in particular, showed increasing trends in all three parameters. On seasonal scale, pre-monsoon and monsoon months remained mostly trendless for all three parameters. Maximum significant decreasing trends were observed during January–May while maximum increasing trends were reported during June–December. Also, a higher Sen slope value of the yearly maximum increase in the minimum temperature indicated steeper increase in minimum temperature over maximum temperature.

Does Today’s Parental Intimacy Predict Tomorrow’s Peer Interaction in Daily Lives of Korean Adolescents?: A Mediating Role of Daily Self-Evaluation

Grace Chung,YOO JOAN PAEK,이상균 대한가정학회 2015 International Journal of Human Ecology Vol.16 No.1

The primary purpose of this study was to examine to what extent adolescents’ daily self-evaluation mediates the effect of experiencing intimacy in parent-adolescent interactions on positive peer interactions the next day, even after controlling for gender and grade level. We employed a daily diary method for seven days in a sample of 452 Korean adolescents, collecting checklist data at the end of each day. Data were analyzed by using hierarchical linear modeling. According to moderated multilevel mediation analyses, the variance of self-evaluation explained 83% of the variance in the lagged effect of parental intimacy on the next day peer interaction even after the upper-level effects of gender and grade level were accounted for. Forth graders were more likely than 7th graders to have a more positive view of themselves when they experienced parental intimacy the previous day. Girls were less likely to experience positive peer interactions when they perceived less intimacy with their parents the day before. Results suggested that it would be most effective for peer relationship programs to teach parents and adolescents how to experience intimacy in their daily interactions, particularly in ways that help adolescents to think more positively about themselves. It would be helpful for parents to learn about various ways to compliment and encourage the adolescent child in everyday conversations. Lastly, findings in grade level differences also suggest that these programs might be especially effective for 4th graders more than 7th graders.

The Wicked Which Hunt: The Decline of Which-Relatives in 20th Century American English

        Grace Ge-Soon Moon 한국영어학학회 2012 영어학연구 Vol.18 No.3

Unlike non-restrictive relative clauses, which have long given sole sovereignty to wh-forms, restrictive relative clauses are open to variation between wh-forms, that, and zero. In Present-Day American English, however, restrictive relatives clauses with which have shown a steep decline in usage. The present study aims to shed light on this downward trend of which-relatives by conducting a corpus-based quantitative and qualitative analysis. In an attempt to place the change in the overall evolutionary development of 20th century American English, it is argued with Leech et al. (2009) that which, being the more formal and less colloquial variant, has given way to that (and presumably zero) under the pressures of a larger, prevalent trend of colloquialization. It is further postulated that colloquialization in this case is reinforced by forces of prescriptivism. Though several potential parameters for the distribution of which-relatives are proposed on the basis of the notion of syntactic complexity, the results obtained from the statistical analysis do not offer conclusive evidence of the correlation between the use of which and syntactic complexity. This points to a need for further examination of the phenomenon at hand, perhaps this time from the view of discourse and/or stylistics.
