Vehicle vibrations cause the physical and mental fatigue, thereby degrading the riding comfort. The vehicle accelerator pedal constantly generates vibrations while driving and is in direct contact with the driver. However, relevant studies on the vibration effects of the accelerator pedal have not been sufficiently conducted. This paper presents a method to evaluate the level of vibrotactile sensation perceived by drivers due to the vehicle accelerator pedal vibration and be able to predict riding comfort. Equivalent comfort contours for foot-transmitted vibrations are derived based on the sensitivity of the foot sole measured through vibrotactile sensation tests. With the equivalent comfort contours, weighting filters for three types of vehicles—conventional gasoline, hybrid, and electric—are generated. Then, weighted vibrations representing the vibrotactile sensation level perceived by drivers from the vehicle accelerator pedal are produced by applying the weighting filters to measured vibration data from the accelerator pedal of each vehicle type.

Laser weapons are being developed competitively in the defense industry because they are relatively easy to use and can exert powerful energy with high cost-efficiency. FSM(Fast Steering Mirror) is a very significant component for precisely tracking target objects and aligning beam. In this study, a new type of FSM with voice coil actuators was developed. In consideration of the amount of electromagnetic force allowed by voice coil actuators, the reliability of the structural design for implementing the desired performances such as driving range, bandwidth, and angular acceleration was verified. ANSYS Electronics, a software for electromagnetic analysis, and ANSYS Mechanical for structural analysis were used in order to evaluate the reliability of FSM. Moreover, the structural robustness was verified by having a sufficient safety factor through stress analysis.

A laser weapon is a directed-energy weapon system that uses a high-energy laser to target and destroy the enemy. To precisely control laser to the target, the FSM (fast steering mirror) is an essential component in the precise control strategy. FSMs are optical devices that accurately aim a laser beam using the mirror's reflective surface and typically require large deflection and wide bandwidth. However, since a piezo-based actuator is utilized to drive the FSM, the dynamic characteristics of the actuators affect the overall system. In this study, static and dynamic performances were predicted by establishing a piezoelectric coupling analysis model of an FSM that amplified the piezo actuator. The performances in static and dynamic operation were subsequently calculated.

Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is one of the most common nosocomial infections. Dysbiosis of the gut microbiota due to consumption of antibiotics is a major contributor to CDI. Recently, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has been applied to treat CDI. However, FMT has important limitations including uncontrolled exposure to pathogens and standardization issues. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate alternative treatment methods, such as bacteriotherapy, as well as the mechanism through which beneficial bacteria inhibit the growth of C. difficile. Here, we report bile acid-mediated inhibition of C. difficile by Bacteroides strains which can produce bile salt hydrolase (BSH). Bacteroides strains are not commonly used to treat CDI; however, as they comprise a large proportion of the intestinal microbiota, they can contribute to bile acid-mediated inhibition of C. difficile. The inhibitory effect on C. difficile growth increased with increasing bile acid concentration in the presence of Bacteroides ovatus SNUG 40239. Furthermore, this inhibitory effect on C. difficile growth was significantly attenuated when bile acid availability was reduced by cholestyramine, a bile acid sequestrant. The findings of this study are important due to the discovery of a new bacterial strain that in the presence of available bile acids inhibits growth of C. difficile. These results will facilitate development of novel bacteriotherapy strategies to control CDI.
