Background: Mahuang (Ephedra sinica STAPF) is well known as an herbal medicine and has been widely used to reduce body weight and increase athletic ability. However, as a result of reporting many cases of adverse effects on the cardiovascular system, use of dietary supplements containing ephedra was prohibited by the FDA. Objectives : The object of this study was to find the effectiveness of ephedra on weight loss without severe adverse effect. Methods : 16 healthy volunteers consisting of an ephedra group (N=8) and a placebo group (N=8) were investigated. Study form was a randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical trial. The ephedra group took 12g of ephedra while the placebo group took 12g of glutinous rice powder. Both groups were measured with BCA (body composition analysis) on weight loss and with HRV (heart rate variability) on its adverse effect before and after medication. Results : The following results were obtained after taking 12g of ephedra for 14 days. In the ephedra group, body weight reduced significantly. In the placebo group, there were no significant differences of body weight between before and after placebo treatment. There was a slight increase of heart beat rate and deactivation of cardiac activity. Parasympathetic nerves were deactivated, but balances of autonomic nervous system were well maintained. Conclusions : The results suggest that ephedra in healthy adults tends to reduce body weight and deactivation of autonomic nervous system and cardiac activity.

This study aimed to point out interactions between grapefruit and antihypertensive agents by reviewing published journal articles. Eight electronic databases were searched to identify literatures. Clinical and experimental studies on grapefruit interaction with antihypertensive drugs were selected by two independent researchers. Data were extracted by synergism/inhibition, relevant substances and mechanisms, and adverse events. Furanocoumarins, cytochrome P450 inhibition were analyzed to check out grapefruit-drug interactions. Fifty nine studies on interactions between grapefruit and 16 drugs were analyzed. Evident interactions were reported among grapefruit and most calcium channel blockers or beta blockers. Reversible inhibition of bergamottin and 6',7'-dihydroxybergamottin on cytochrome P450, P-glycoprotein, organic anion transporting polypeptide were mechanisms of interactions. Age-specific and genetic differences of clinical outcomes and adverse events were observed. Grapefruit interacts with antihypertensive agents and its results could induce negative clinical outcome. Furanocoumarins regulate drug absorption pathway that result citrus-drug interactions. Medical professionals should give information about food-drug interactions to their patients and caregivers.

This study aimed to provide current information on combined use of chinese patent medicines (CPM) and antihypertensive agents. Clinical articles were searched with China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Primary keywords were 81 antihypertensive agents permitted in Korea. Secondary keywords were 59 chinese patent medicines which have effect on lowering blood pressure. Search queries made of combined keywords were processed. Searched articles were analyzed as study designs, diagnostic standards, blood pressure measurements, adverse events and interactions. Sixty-one articles of randomized trials (n=43), non-randomized trials (n=3) and case studies (n=15) were selected. Total 42 pairs among 15 antihypertensive agents and 17 chinese patent medicines were analyzed. Seven global or domestic guidelines were adopted to diagnose hypertension and 9 tools were used to assess effectiveness. Severe adverse events were reported from hydrochlorothiazide with zhenju jiangya-pian (珍菊降压片) or jiangya bifeng-pian (降压避風片), captopril with songling xuemaikang-jiaonang (松齡血脈康膠囊) and nifedipine with fubang danshen-diwan (复方丹参滴丸). Combined use of antihypertensive drugs and chinese patent medicines can cause various clinical conditions. Healthcare professionals also patients and caregivers should be informed of herb-drug interaction risk and safety.

This paper describes research results for the measurement and analysis method of magnetic signatures generated from the ship's magnetic mock-up model. In this paper, we present the theoretical and experimental techniques for the separation of the permanent and the induced magnetic field from the measured magnetic signature of the mock-up model. Also, we describe the prediction method of the induced magnetic field generated from mock-up model using the Magnet s/w, one of the FEM analysis tools for the electro-magnetic field and the magnetic dipole modelling method based on the least square techniques. The proposed modelling and analysis methods can be used for the prediction and the analysis of the static magnetic field generated from the real naval ship as well as the mock-up model.

Background : Low level laser therapy may be an effective method to protect tissue damage in acute stroke. Recently, series of clinical studies on the basis of animal experiments report efficacy and safety of laser therapy at early stages of acute stroke. Laser promotes mitochondrial ATP synthesis to reduce cell death by ischemic infarction. Objectives : To report possibility of non-invasive laser therapy for acute stroke by reviewing literature about its effectiveness, safety and mechanism. Methods : We searched papers using PubMed and 'Web of Knowledge' of Thomson ISI, using the keywords "Laser Therapy, Low-Level" and "Stroke". Limitations were last 10 years of publications and only in English. Search range includes RCTs, clinical reports, reviews and animal experiments. Papers not matched with inclusion criteria were excluded. Results : A total 223 studies were found, 203 excluded during title and extract screening. After scanning 20 papers the final 2 serial RCTs were selected and analyzed. They reported that transcranial laser therapy led in neuroprotective effect for acute stroke patents. Clinical evaluation factors showed favorable trend and initial safety. Conclusions : Non-invasive laser secured safety of clinical application. It may be a favorable choice for the acute stage of stroke.
