서동호,조의상,황치영,윤덕준,천정혜,장유진,남영도,박수림,임승일,김재환,서명지 한국미생물·생명공학회 2019 한국미생물·생명공학회지 Vol.47 No.1
We have isolated and identified 72 bacterial strains from four bentonite samples collected at the mining areas located in Gyeongsangbuk-do, Republic of Korea, and measured their hydrolytic enzyme (α-amylase, protease, and cellulase) activities to identify the isolates with industrial-use potential. Most of the isolates belonged to the Bacillaceae, with minor portions being from the Paenibacillaceae, Micrococcaceae, and Bacillales Family XII at the family level. Of the strains isolated, 33 had extracellular α-amylase activity, 30 strains produced cellulase, and 35 strains produced protease. Strain MBLB1268, having the highest α- amylase activity, was identified as Bacillus siamensis (0.38 ± 0.06 U/ml). Bacillus tequilensis MBLB1223, isolated from Byi33-b, showed the highest cellulase activity (0.26 ± 0.04 U/ml), whereas Bacillus wiedmannii MBLB1197, isolated from Zdb130-b, exhibited the highest protease activity (54.99 ± 0.78 U/ml). These findings show that diverse bacteria of the Bacillaceae family adhere to and exist in bentonite and are potential sources of industrially useful hydrolytic enzymes.

Millimeter waves are electromagnetic waves with frequencies of 30–300 GHz (wavelength 1–10 mm), and millimeter wave stimulation affects microorganism growth. The present study stimulated Bacillus subtilis with 60 and 70 GHz millimeter waves during cheonggukjang fermentation and characterized the effects on cheonggukjang quality. Cheonggukjang treated with millimeter wave irradiation showed no significant difference in total bacterial count but generated only 5.52-5.92% viscous substance. Irradiation with 60 GHz millimeter waves yielded bright and intense color values relative to 70 GHz millimeter waves. Examination of the amylase activity and reducing sugar content of finished cheonggukjang revealed that irradiation at 70 GHz inhibited amylase activity in cheonggukjang. Furthermore, irradiation at 70 GHz increased protease activity, whereas irradiation at 60 GHz inhibited the activity. Moreover, the amino acid content changed with millimeter wave irradiation.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the occurrencerate of diffusion positive lesions (DPLs), and to assess the peri-proceduralrisk factors for the occurrence of DPLs in patients who underwent coilembolization of cerebral aneurysms. Materials and Methods : A total of 304 saccular aneurysms were embolizedduring a seven-year period from Jan 2007 to Dec 2013. Of these, postoperative diffusion-weighted images were obtained in 186 procedures. There were 100 ruptured aneurysm and 86 unruptured aneurysms. Thecoiling procedures were as follows: simple coiling in 96, balloon assistedcoiling (BAC) in 39, and stent assisted coiling (SAC) in 51 aneurysms. Clinical, angiographic and procedural factors were analyzed in relation tothe occurrence of DPLs. Results : Overall, DPLs were observed in 50.5%. In unruptured aneurysms,DPLs occurred in 23.5% of BAC, 41.9% of SAC and 57.7% of simple coiling(p = 0.08). Among ruptured aneurysms, DPLs occurred in 63.6% of BAC,62.5% of SAC and 54.3% of simple coiling (p = 0.71). DPLs had a tendencyto increase in ruptured aneurysms compared with unruptured aneurysms(57% vs. 43%, p = 0.077). Logistic regression analysis revealed that age > 55years was the only independent risk factor for the occurrence of DPLs. Conclusion : DPLs occured more frequently in ruptured aneurysm and atan older age. Although most DPLs are asymptomatic, careful manipulationof cerebral or extracerebral arteries using various endovascular devices isimportant to reducing the occurrence of DPLs. BAC appeared to reduceoccurrence of TE events in patient with unruptured aneurysm.

Many studies have been conducted to promote germination in brown rice in order to improve its nutritional value in terms of enzymes, protein quality, and micronutrient content. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of millimeter wave on germination. Millimeter wave is a form of electromagnetic radiation with frequency between 30 and 300 GHz, and is also called ‘biomicrowave’. Millimeter wave significantly stimulated germination. Total polyphenol content and DPPH radical scavenging activity also increased, especially at high frequency and prolonged dose. However, γ-aminobutyric acid content was diminished.
Versatile biotechnological applications of amylosucrase, a novel glucosyltransferase
서동호,유상호,최승준,김영록,박천석 한국식품과학회 2020 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.29 No.1
Amylosucrase (AS; EC 2.4.1.4) is an enzyme that has great potential in the biotechnology and food industries, due to its multifunctional enzyme activities. It can synthesize a-1,4-glucans, like amylose, from sucrose as a sole substrate, but importantly, it can also utilize various other molecules as acceptors. In addition, AS produces sucrose isomers such as turanose and trehalulose. It also efficiently synthesizes modified starch with increased ratios of slow digestive starch and resistant starch, and glucosylated functional compounds with increased water solubility and stability. Furthermore, AS produces turnaose more efficiently than other carbohydrate-active enzymes. Amylose synthesized by AS forms microparticles and these can be utilized as biocompatible materials with various bio-applications, including drug delivery, chromatography, and bioanalytical sciences. This review not only compares the gene and enzyme characteristics of microbial AS, studied to date, but also focuses on the applications of AS in the biotechnology and food industries.

Millimeter waves are electric waves between 30 and 300 GHz. They are known to affect microbial growth. Here, the effects of millimeter waves on the microbiological and physicochemical properties of Makgeolli irradiated during fermentation were investigated. Millimeter waves at 60 and 70 GHz were used, and the fermentation was carried out at 30oC. The numbers of both lactic acid bacteria and yeasts have changed with similar pattern each then during the fermentation, but the effect of milimeter wave treatment was not critical as growth patterns were independent of both irradiation period and wave frequency. Furthermore, pH and total acidity did not change during fermentation. Although irradiation drastically increased sugar production during the initial stage of fermentation, the change was not frequency dependent. At the end of fermentation, the alcohol content in irradiated Makgeolli was definitely higher than that in un-irradiated Makgeolli, and the difference was frequency dependent.

In this paper, a simultaneous wireless power and data receiving system is designed based on the SWIPT. The SWIPT is a multi-functional system for low-power sensor nodes including a communication receiver and a rectifying system. While the receiver system consists of a BPF, LNAs, and a detector, the rectifying system consists of a rectifier circuit, schottky diode, an impedance matching circuit, and a LPF. From the experimental results of implemented devices, each system operates for data detection and DC supply with 40kbps OOK-modulated data recovery and 28% rectifying efficiency.
Ligamentum Flavum Cyst of Lumbar Spine: A Case Report and Literature Review
서동호,박혜란,오재상,도재원 대한척추신경외과학회 2014 Neurospine Vol.11 No.1
Ligamentum flavum cysts have rarely been reported and known to be the uncommon cause of spinal compression and radiculopathy. A 63-year-old man presented right sciatica lasting for 1 month. Lumbar computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an extradural cystic mass adjacent to the L5-S1 facet joints. Partial hemilaminectomy and flavectomy at the L5-S1 space were performed, and then the cystic mass was excised. Histopathology confirmed a connective tissue cyst, which is consistent with the ligamentum flavum. Microscopic examination of the cyst wall revealed that it is closely packed collagen fibril. The symptom of patient was improved after surgery. Because of rarity of ligamentum flavum cysts and nonspecific clinical and radiologic findings, the preoperative diagnosis is not easy. The histologic featuresof ligamentum flavum cysts are distinct from other cystic lesion of lumbar spine. This study presents a case and literature review of ligamentum flavum cyst. We summarize the pathophysiology, occurrence, differential diagnosis of rare ligamentum flavum cyst, especially on lumbar spine.
