Abundance and host-seeking activity of the biting midge, Forcipomyia taiwana (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae)

        Chang-Liang Shih,Quei-Min Liao,Ya-Yuan Wang,Wu-Chun Tu 한국응용곤충학회 2019 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.22 No.4

The abundance and host-seeking activity of the biting midge, Forcipomyia taiwana (Shiraki), were measured in Central Taiwan at 418 locations with low, medium, and high densities using a human-bait method. Abundance estimates at 10 min after sampling commenced were comparable to longer sampling periods of 20 min, allowing a shorter 10 min sampling period to be used throughout. Host-seeking F. taiwana females were only active during daylight and biting activity did not occur after sunset. The diurnal activity of host-seeking females changed seasonally, beginning at around 07:00–08:00 during the spring equinox, summer solstice, and autumnal equinox, whereas activity began an hour later in winter. Most females were collected during 10:00–16:00, with a peak abundance during 13:00–15:00. Blood-sucking activity of female F. taiwana were positively correlated with ambient temperature with a minimum threshold of 18 °C. When different years, seasons, trapping times, environmental factors, and female adults trapped were analyzed using multiple regression model, the results showed that all these factors contributed to the regression model and the determination coefficient (R 2 ) of this multiple regression model was 0.81.

Parkinson’s Disease with Fatigue: Clinical Characteristics and Potential Mechanisms Relevant to α-Synuclein Oligomer

        Li-Jun Zuo,Shu-Yang Yu,Fang Wang,Yanghui Xia,Ying-Shan Piao,Yang Du,Teng-Hong Lian,Rui-Dan Wang,Qiu-Jin Yu,Ya-Jie Wang,Xiao-Min Wang,Piu Chan,Sheng-Di Chen,Yongjun Wang,Wei Zhang 대한신경과학회 2016 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.12 No.2

Background and Purpose The aim of this study was to identify the clinical characteristics and potential mechanisms relevant to pathological proteins in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients who experience fatigue. Methods PD patients (n=102) were evaluated using a fatigue severity scale and scales for motor and nonmotor symptoms. The levels of three pathological proteins—α-synuclein oligomer, β-amyloid (Aβ)1-42, and tau—were measured in 102 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from these PD patients. Linear regression analyses were performed between fatigue score and the CSF levels of the above-listed pathological proteins in PD patients. Results The frequency of fatigue in the PD patients was 62.75%. The fatigue group had worse motor symptoms and anxiety, depression, and autonomic dysfunction. The CSF level of α-synuclein oligomer was higher and that of Aβ1-42 was lower in the fatigue group than in the non-fatigue group. In multiple linear regression analyses, fatigue severity was significantly and positively correlated with the α-synuclein oligomer level in the CSF of PD patients, after adjusting for confounders. Conclusions PD patients experience a high frequency of fatigue. PD patients with fatigue have worse motor and part nonmotor symptoms. Fatigue in PD patients is associated with an increased α-synuclein oligomer level in the CSF

      • Development and Validation of Nomograms to Provide Individualized Predictions of Sur-vival Benefits from Surgery in Patients with Intermediate/Advanced Hepatocel-lular Carcinoma

        ( Wen-tao Yan ),( Jia-he Wang ),( Ming-da Wang ),( Zheng Wang ),( Bing Quan ),( Ya-hao Zhou ),( Wei-min Gu ),( Hong Wang ),( Ting-hao Chen ),( Tian Yang ) 대한간학회 2018 춘·추계 학술대회 (KASL) Vol.2018 No.1

Aims: According to the BCLC treatment guidelines, surgery does not be recommended for intermediate/advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In real world, however, liver resections are often performed in patients with intermediate/ advanced but resectable HCC, especially in the East. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated multicentric data of 1,325 patients newly diagnosed with intermediate/advanced HCC who underwent curative resection. We randomly divided the subjects into development (n = 875) and validation (n = 450) samples. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards models were developed and separately validated on the basis of patients’ clinicopathological variables assessed for associations with 1-year recurrence and 3-year mortality. The discriminatory accuracy of these models was compared with conventional tools by analyzing receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: He statistical nomograms built based on performance status, Child-Pugh grade, portal hypertension, preoperative alpha-fetoprotein level, tumor rupture, largest tumor diameter, tumor number, macrovascular and microvascular invasion, and satellites had good calibration and discriminatory abilities, with c-indices of 0.70 (1-year recurrence) and 0.68 (3-year survival), respectively. These models showed satisfactory goodness-of-fit and discrimination abilities in the validation cohort (c-index, 0.68 for 1-year recurrence and 0.69 for 3-year survival). The areas under the ROC curve using these nomograms exceeded those of traditional staging systems, indicating superior discriminatory capability (c-indices, 0.60-0.63 and 0.56-0.62, respectively). Conclusions: Our proposed online nomograms, which present graphically postoperative prognostic models for recurrence and survival in patients with intermediate/advanced but resectable HCC, offer valuable guidance to surgeons and hepatologists for individually predicting survival benefits from surgery and planning recurrence surveillance and adjuvant therapy.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>La2Ni0.8Cu0.2O4+δ electrodes with different thicknesses were prepared on Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9 electrolyte using screen printing technique. The electrocatalytic activity of La2Ni0.8Cu0.2O4+δ electrodes towards oxygen reduction reaction was investigated in comparison with La2NiO4+δ electrode. To understand the electrocatalytic activity of the two electrodes, chemical states of constituent elements on the surface of La2NiO4+δ and La2Ni0.8Cu0.2O4+δ were analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy technique. La2Ni0.8Cu0.2O4+δ electrodes sintered at 920°C exhibited improved electrocatalytic activity relative to literature results of the electrodes sintered at higher temperatures (e.g. 1200°C). The Cu doping in La2NiO4+δ was validated to be effective in enhancing electrocatalytic activity. The electrocatalytic activity of La2Ni0.8Cu0.2O4+δ electrodes was found to be dependent on their thickness. Optimal electrocatalytic activity was achieved for the electrode with a thickness of 10μm, showing a polarization resistance of 0.13Ω cm2 at 800°C. The effects of Cu doping and electrode thickness were diagnosed with respect to contributions of involved electrode reaction steps. The results of this work underscore that the electrocatalytic activity of La2Ni0.8Cu0.2O4+δ electrodes is dictated by dissociative adsorption process of molecular oxygen on the surface.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> LNC electrodes achieved improved electrocatalytic activity than literature results. </LI> <LI> The electrocatalytic activity of LNC electrodes is higher than LN electrode. </LI> <LI> The electrocatalytic activity of LNC electrodes is dependent on thickness. </LI> <LI> The optimal electrode polarization resistance of LNC is 0.13Ω cm2 at 800°C. </LI> <LI> The effects of Cu doping and electrode thickness have been explained. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Angiotensin I Converting Enzyme (ACE) Inhibitory Activity and Antihypertensive Effects of Grass Carp Peptides

        Wang Shen,Lin Li-mei,Wu Yong-ning,Fang Min,Yu Ya-qin,Zhou Jia,Gong Zhi-yong 한국식품과학회 2014 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.23 No.5

In vitro and in vivo antihypertensive effects ofgrass carp peptides (GCP) were investigated. The aminoacid composition and the angiotensinconverting enzymeinhibitory activity were evaluated using HPLC. GCP wasadministrated to spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs)and Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) by single and long-termadministration before blood pressure measurements. Plasma levels of angiotensin II (Ang II), rennin (RA), nitricoxide (NO), and plasma angiotensin I converting enzyme(ACE) activity were measured. The GCP molecular weightwas between 725 and 1,228 Da with high levels of Leu,Asp, Phe, Gly, and Pro. The in vitro IC50 value was 0.23mg/mL. GCP lowered SHR blood pressure dose and timedependently. Little change occurred in WKY. The plasmalevel of Ang II and the ACE activity decreased. SHR RAand NO concentrations in plasma increased. Theantihypertensive effect of GCP was associated with NOregulation and the rennin-angiotensin system.

Inhibitory effects of piceatannol on human cytomegalovirus (hCMV) in vitro

        Wang San-Ying,Zhang Jing,Xu Xiao-Gang,Su Hui-Li,Xing Wen-Min,Zhang Zhong-Shan,Jin Wei-Hua,Dai Ji-Huan,Wang Ya-Zhen,He Xin-Yue,Sun Chuan,Yan Jing,Mao Gen-Xiang 한국미생물학회 2020 The journal of microbiology Vol.58 No.8

Human cytomegalovirus (hCMV) is a ubiquitous herpesvirus, which results in the establishment of a latent infection that persists throughout the life of the host and can be reactivated when the immunity is low. Currently, there is no vaccine for hCMV infection, and the licensed antiviral drugs mainly target the viral enzymes and have obvious adverse reactions. Thus, it is important to search for compounds with antihCMV properties. The present study aimed to investigate the suppressive effects of piceatannol on hCMV Towne strain infection and the putative underlying mechanisms using human diploid fibroblast WI-38 cells. Piceatannol supplementation prevented the lytic changes induced by hCMV infection in WI-38 cells. Furthermore, piceatannol suppressed the expression of hCMV immediate-early (IE) and early (E) proteins as well as the replication of hCMV DNA in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, hCMV-induced cellular senescence was suppressed by piceatannol, as shown by a decline in the senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA-β-Gal) activity and decreased production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). p16INK4a, a major senescence-associated molecule, was dramatically elevated by current hCMV infection that was attenuated by pre-incubation with piceatannol in a dose-dependent manner. These results demonstrated that piceatannol suppressed the hCMV infection via inhibition of the activation of p16INK4a and cellular senescence induced by hCMV. Together, these findings indicate piceatannol as a novel and potent anti-hCMV agent with the potential to be developed as an effective treatment for chronic hCMV infection.

Survey on electrochemical properties of La2−xSrxNiO4±δ (x = 0.2 and 0.8, δ > 0) cathodes related with structural stability under cathodic polarization conditions

        Wang, Ya-Ping,Xu, Qing,Huang, Duan-Ping,Zhao, Kai,Chen, Min,Kim, Bok-Hee Elsevier 2017 International journal of hydrogen energy Vol.42 No.9

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In view of utilization as cathodes for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), the La2−xSrxNiO4±δ (x = 0.2 and 0.8, δ > 0) series of compounds were evaluated with respect to their electrical conducting, thermomechanical and electrochemical properties. On the one hand, La1.2Sr0.8NiO4−δ exhibits a higher electrical conductivity (>180 S cm−1 in the temperature range 600–800 °C) and a lower electrode polarization under open-circuit voltage conditions (∼0.12 Ω cm2 at 800 °C) than La1.8Sr0.2NiO4+δ, together with a suitable thermal expansion coefficient (13.8 × 10−6 K−1 averaged between 50 and 1000 °C). On the other hand, the structure and electrochemical properties of La1.2Sr0.8NiO4−δ electrode were obviously changed after being subjected to cathodic polarization. The cathodically polarized La1.2Sr0.8NiO4−δ electrode showed an aggregation of strontium oxide onto the surface, concomitant with a degradation of electrochemical properties. By contrast, the structure and electrochemical properties of La1.8Sr0.2NiO4+δ electrode before and after cathodic polarization were basically unvaried. The disparate changes in structure and electrochemical properties of the two electrodes were interpreted in terms of their differing peculiarities in oxygen nonstoichiometry. The results of this work highlight the importance of strontium content and thereby oxygen nonstoichiometry of La1−xSrxNiO4±δ electrodes to their structural stability under cathodic polarization conditions, which is a critical point to be used as cathodes in SOFCs.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> LSN2 and LSN8 were evaluated in view of cathode utilization for IT-SOFCs. </LI> <LI> LSN8 exhibits higher electrical conductivity and catalytic activity than LSN2. </LI> <LI> Cathodically polarized LSN8 electrode undergoes structure and property changes. </LI> <LI> The structure and properties of polarized LSN2 electrode remains unchanged. </LI> <LI> The disparate behaviors of the two electrodes were interpreted. </LI> </UL> </P>
