    The purpose of this study was to examine the structural relationship of family cultural and social capital, which were two major elements of family background, to students' English academic achievement and its changes based on the data of the Korea Education Longitudinal Study conducted by the Korea Educational Development Institute. It's specifically meant to investigate the micro and complex processes of how the cultural and social capital of families would mediate the influence of socioeconomic standing such as the occupation, academic credential and income of parents and how the two factors would affect initial English academic achievement and its changes through the sociopsychological variables of students such as English learning attitude and achievement aspiration.
    To be specific, in which way the socioeconomic standing of parents and their cultural capital and social capital impacted on the English academic achievement of the students was analyzed. To find out the structural process of the influence of the family background factors on the English academic achievement of the students, how the external and environmental family elements involving the socioeconomic status of parents, family cultural capital and family social capital affected their English academic achievement through the medium of their own socio- psychological factors including English self-efficacy, intrinsic motivation and achievement aspiration was analyzed. After a pervasive trend in the improvement of their English academic achievement was checked, how their family background impacted on their changes in English academic achievement through the medium of the sociopsychological variables was analyzed as well. Finally, whether their family background and socio- psychological variables had a different impact on their English academic achievement and changes in it according to gender was compared.
    After relevant theories were analyzed to select potential variables, the variables that corresponded to the selected potential variables were selected from the data of the Korea Education Longitudinal Study, and then a latent growth model of English academic achievement was devised. After the finalized research model was analyzed, a multigroup analysis was carried out to see whether there were any gender gaps among the participant students in initial English academic achievement and changes in it and whether their family background had a different impact on their initial English academic achievement and its changes according to gender.
    As a result of analyzing the latent growth model of English academic achievement, the following findings were given:
    First, the socioeconomic status of the parents exerted a firsthand influence on their family social capital, family cultural capital, and the English learning attitude, achievement aspiration and initial English academic achievement of the students, and that also had a secondhand impact on their English learning attitude, achievement aspiration, initial English academic achievement and changes in it. At the same time, the socioeconomic standing of the parents affected their progress in English academic achievement in a secondhand manner. The socioeconomic standing of the parents exercised a greater secondhand influence through the medium of family cultural capital, family social capital and the sociopsychological variables of the students in comparison with its firsthand impact. In other words, it could be said that the socioeconomic status of the parents itself affected the English academic achievement of the students, and that it was more influential by being incorporated into family cultural capital, family social capital and the sociopsychological variables of the students. It indicates that the socioeconomic status of parents, which is the source of family capital, is transformed into family cultural capital and family social capital, which serves, in turn, to lay the foundation for the sociopsychological characteristics of students like attitude or achievement aspiration.
    Second, family cultural capital was assessed by taking the possession of cultural property and quantity of reading into account. As a result, family cultural capital was found to have a firsthand influence on the initial English academic achievement of the students and to affect them in a secondhand manner by stirring up their positive self-awareness of English learning capabilities, their interest in English learning and sense of academic and vocational purposes. In addition, that had a significant secondhand effect on their changes in English academic achievement through the medium of their sociopsychological variables.
    Third, family social capital was evaluated by taking into consideration parental expectation, parental learning support and parental networks. And that was found not to have any significant firsthand impact on their initial English academic achievement and changes in it, but that had a lasting significant effect on their initial English academic achievement and progress in that aspect through the medium of their English learning attitude and achievement aspiration. In other words, parental expectation, parental learning assistance and parental networks didn't serve to determine the English academic achievement of the students. Instead, the variables affected their motivation, academic self-efficacy and achievement aspiration and then impacted on their academic achievement through those factors.
    Fourth, the English learning attitude and achievement aspiration of the students exercised a significant positive influence on their English academic achievement. A stronger achievement aspiration and higher English academic achievement were found in those whose English self-efficacy was better and whose intrinsic English-learning motivation was stronger, and those students showed better improvement in English academic achievement. A stronger achievement aspiration involving vocational and educational aspiration led to better English academic achievement and then to greater progress in that aspect.
    Fifth, the sociopsychological variables of the students mediated the influence of the family background on English academic achievement. Namely, their English learning attitude and achievement aspiration mediated the impact of the socioeconomic standing of the parents, family cultural capital and family social capital on English academic achievement, and there was a similar tendency in terms of changes in English academic achievement as well.
    Sixth, there were no gaps between the boys and girls in the structural relationship between the family background and English academic achievement. In other words, no gender gaps were found between the boys and girls in the process that the socioeconomic status of their parents, family cultural capital and family social capital determined their English academic achievement. Furthermore, there were no gender gaps between the boys and girls in the influence of the family background on English academic achievement through the sociopsychological variables.
    Finally, the ascriptive factors such as the socioeconomic status of the parents, family cultural capital and family social capital had an effect on English academic achievement not just on a temporary basis. Instead, those factors continued to produce lasting effects during the three-year academic progress of the students. Namely, the family background of the students exerted a prolonged, accumulative and differentiated influence on the determination of their English learning achievement, thereby triggering an educational divide in English among the different social classes.

    본 연구에서는 한국교육개발원에서 실시한 ‘한국교육종단연구(KELS)’ 자료를 이용하여 가정 배경의 두 주요 요인인 문화자본 및 사회자본이 영어학업성취 및 그 변화와 어떻게 구조적 관계를 맺고 있는지를 분석하였다. 이를 위하여 가정의 문화자본과 사회자본이 부모의 직업과 학력, 소득으로 구성된 사회경제적지위의 영향을 어떻게 매개하고, 이 두 요인이 다시 학생의 영어학습태도와 성취열망과 같은 사회심리적 변인을 통하여 어떤 양상으로 영어학업성취 초기치 및 변화율에 영향을 미치게 되는지에 대한 미시적이고 복합적인 과정을 살펴보고자 하였다.
    연구의 목적을 보다 구체적으로 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 부모의 사회경제적지위, 가정의 문화자본 및 사회자본이 학생의 영어학업성취에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 둘째, 가정배경 요인들이 학생의 영어학업성취에 영향을 미치는 과정을 구조적으로 파악하기 위하여 부모의 사회경제적지위, 가정의 문화자본 및 사회자본과 같은 외적․환경적 요인이 학생 개인의 사회심리적 요인인 영어자기효능감과 내재적 동기, 성취열망을 매개로 영어학업성취에 미치는 영향력을 검증하였다. 셋째, 학생들의 영어학업성취 발달 추이를 살펴보고 학생의 가정배경이 사회심리적 변인을 매개로 하여 영어학업성취 변화에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 분석하였다.
    넷째, 성별에 따라 학생의 가정배경과 사회심리적 변인이 영어학업성취 및 성취변화에 미치는 영향력이 달라지는지 비교하였다.
    이를 위해 본 연구에서는 이론적 배경에 근거하여 잠재변인들을 구성하였고 이에 해당하는 측정변인들을 한국교육종단연구 데이터에서 선정, 구성한 뒤 최종적으로 영어학업성취결정 잠재성장모형(Latent Growth Model)을 구안하였다. 최종 연구모형의 분석에 이어 영어학업성취 초기치 및 변화율에 있어 성별에 따른 차이가 있는지, 학생의 가정배경 및 사회심리적 변인이 영어학업성취 초기치 및 변화율에 미치는 영향력의 양상이 성별에 따라 달라지는지 밝히기 위하여 다집단 분석을 실시하였다.
    영어학업성취결정 잠재성장모형의 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 부모의 사회경제적지위는 가정의 사회자본 및 문화자본, 학생의 영어학습태도와 성취열망, 학생의 영어학업성취 초기치에 직접적인 영향력을 미치고 있었고, 영어학습태도와 성취열망, 영어학업성취 초기치 및 변화율에 간접 영향력을 미치고 있었다. 또한 부모의 사회경제적지위는 학생의 이후 영어학업성취 성장에도 정적인 간접 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 그런데 학생의 영어학업성취에 미치는 부모의 사회경제적지위 효과는 직접 효과보다 가정의 문화자본과 사회자본, 학생의 사회심리적 변인을 매개로 하여 미치는 간접 효과가 더 큰 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 부모의 사회경제적지위는 그 자체로도 학생의 영어학업성취에 영향을 미치지만 가정의 문화자본과 사회자본, 학생의 사회심리적 변인에 내재되고 변형된 형태로 더 큰 영향을 미친다고 볼 수 있다. 가정자본의 원천이 되는 부모의 사회경제적지위는 자녀의 1차 사회화 과정의 장이 되는 가정의 문화자본과 사회자본으로 변형되고, 이는 다시 자녀의 태도와 성취열망과 같은 사회심리적 특성을 형성하게 되는 밑바탕이 되는 것이다.
    둘째, 가정의 문화재화 보유 정도와 부모의 독서소양으로 측정된 가정의 문화자본은 학생의 영어학업성취 초기치에 직접적인 영향을 미침과 동시에 학생의 영어 학업 능력에 대한 긍정적인 인식과 영어학습에 대한 흥미, 학업과 직업에 대한 목표의식을 고양하는 방식으로 간접적인 영향력도 행사하고 있었다. 또한 영어학업성취 변화에도 학생의 사회심리적 변인들을 매개로 유의미한 간접 효과를 발휘하고 있었다.
    셋째, 부모의 기대와 자녀에 대한 학습지원, 학부모 네트워크로 측정된 가정의 사회자본의 경우 영어학업성취 초기치와 변화율 모두에 미치는 직접적인 효과는 유의미하지 않았으나 학생의 영어학습태도와 성취열망을 매개로 영어학업성취 초기치와 이후의 발달 과정에 지속적으로 유의한 효과를 주고 있었다. 즉, 학부모가 가지는 자녀에 대한 기대와 학습 지원 정도, 학부모간 네트워크의 강도는 그 자체로서 학생의 영어학업성취를 결정짓는 것이 아니라 학생의 동기와 학업적 자기효능감, 성취열망에 영향을 주고 이를 통해 다시 학생의 학업성취에 영향을 미치는 것이다.
    넷째, 학생의 영어학습태도와 성취열망은 영어학업성취에 유의미한 정적 영향을 미치고 있었다. 즉, 영어에 대한 자기효능감이 높을수록, 영어에 대한 내재적 동기가 강할수록 학생의 성취열망, 영어학업성취도와 이후의 향상도가 높았으며, 직업 및 교육 포부 수준과 같은 성취열망이 높을수록 영어학업성취도가 높았고 역시 이후의 향상도 역시 큰 것으로 나타났다.
    다섯째, 학생의 사회심리적 변인들은 영어학업성취에 미치는 가정배경의 영향을 매개하고 있었다. 즉, 학생의 영어학습태도와 성취열망은 부모의 사회경제적지위, 가정의 문화자본, 가정의 사회자본이 영어학업성취에 미치는 영향을 매개하고 있었으며 이후 영어학업성취 변화에 있어서도 대체로 비슷한 양상을 보이고 있었다.
    여섯째, 학생의 가정 배경과 영어학업성취 간 구조적 관계 양상은 남학생과 여학생 간에 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 즉, 부모의 사회경제적지위, 가정의 문화자본 및 사회자본의 영어학업성취 결정 과정에 있어서 남학생과 여학생 간 차이가 없었다. 또한, 학생의 가정배경이 학생의 사회심리적 변인을 통해 영어학업성취에 미치는 영향에 있어서도 남녀 학생 간 차이는 발견되지 않았다.
    끝으로, 부모의 사회경제적지위, 가정의 문화자본, 사회자본과 같은 귀속적 요인들이 영어학업성취에 미치는 효과는 한 시기에만 일시적으로 나타나는 것이 아니라 학생의 3년간의 영어학업성취 발달 과정에 누적되어 나타나고 있었다. 즉, 학생의 가정배경은 영어학업성취 결정과정에 지속적이며 누적적으로 차별적인 영향력을 행사하고 있었고 이로 인해 사회계층간에 영어교육격차가 발생하고 있었다.

    본 연구에서는 한국교육개발원에서 실시한 ‘한국교육종단연구(KELS)’ 자료를 이용하여 가정 배경의 두 주요 요인인 문화자본 및 사회자본이 영어학업성취 및 그 변화와 어떻게 구조적 관계를 맺고 있는지를 분석하였다. 이를 위하여 가정의 문화자본과 사회자본이 부모의 직업과 학력, 소득으로 구성된 사회경제적지위의 영향을 어떻게 매개하고, 이 두 요인이 다시 학생의 영어학습태도와 성취열망과 같은 사회심리적 변인을 통하여 어떤 양상으로 영어학업성취 초기치 및 변화율에 영향을 미치게 되는지에 대한 미시적이고 복합적인 과정을 살펴보고자 하였다.
    연구의 목적을 보다 구체적으로 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 부모의 사회경제적지위, 가정의 문화자본 및 사회자본이 학생의 영어학업성취에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 둘째, 가정배경 요인들이 학생의 영어학업성취에 영향을 미치는 과정을 구조적으로 파악하기 위하여 부모의 사회경제적지위, 가정의 문화자본 및 사회자본과 같은 외적․환경적 요인이 학생 개인의 사회심리적 요인인 영어자기효능감과 내재적 동기, 성취열망을 매개로 영어학업성취에 미치는 영향력을 검증하였다. 셋째, 학생들의 영어학업성취 발달 추이를 살펴보고 학생의 가정배경이 사회심리적 변인을 매개로 하여 영어학업성취 변화에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 분석하였다.
    넷째, 성별에 따라 학생의 가정배경과 사회심리적 변인이 영어학업성취 및 성취변화에 미치는 영향력이 달라지는지 비교하였다.
    이를 위해 본 연구에서는 이론적 배경에 근거하여 잠재변인들을 구성하였고 이에 해당하는 측정변인들을 한국교육종단연구 데이터에서 선정, 구성한 뒤 최종적으로 영어학업성취결정 잠재성장모형(Latent Growth Model)을 구안하였다. 최종 연구모형의 분석에 이어 영어학업성취 초기치 및 변화율에 있어 성별에 따른 차이가 있는지, 학생의 가정배경 및 사회심리적 변인이 영어학업성취 초기치 및 변화율에 미치는 영향력의 양상이 성별에 따라 달라지는지 밝히기 위하여 다집단 분석을 실시하였다.
    영어학업성취결정 잠재성장모형의 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 부모의 사회경제적지위는 가정의 사회자본 및 문화자본, 학생의 영어학습태도와 성취열망, 학생의 영어학업성취 초기치에 직접적인 영향력을 미치고 있었고, 영어학습태도와 성취열망, 영어학업성취 초기치 및 변화율에 간접 영향력을 미치고 있었다. 또한 부모의 사회경제적지위는 학생의 이후 영어학업성취 성장에도 정적인 간접 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 그런데 학생의 영어학업성취에 미치는 부모의 사회경제적지위 효과는 직접 효과보다 가정의 문화자본과 사회자본, 학생의 사회심리적 변인을 매개로 하여 미치는 간접 효과가 더 큰 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 부모의 사회경제적지위는 그 자체로도 학생의 영어학업성취에 영향을 미치지만 가정의 문화자본과 사회자본, 학생의 사회심리적 변인에 내재되고 변형된 형태로 더 큰 영향을 미친다고 볼 수 있다. 가정자본의 원천이 되는 부모의 사회경제적지위는 자녀의 1차 사회화 과정의 장이 되는 가정의 문화자본과 사회자본으로 변형되고, 이는 다시 자녀의 태도와 성취열망과 같은 사회심리적 특성을 형성하게 되는 밑바탕이 되는 것이다.
    둘째, 가정의 문화재화 보유 정도와 부모의 독서소양으로 측정된 가정의 문화자본은 학생의 영어학업성취 초기치에 직접적인 영향을 미침과 동시에 학생의 영어 학업 능력에 대한 긍정적인 인식과 영어학습에 대한 흥미, 학업과 직업에 대한 목표의식을 고양하는 방식으로 간접적인 영향력도 행사하고 있었다. 또한 영어학업성취 변화에도 학생의 사회심리적 변인들을 매개로 유의미한 간접 효과를 발휘하고 있었다.
    셋째, 부모의 기대와 자녀에 대한 학습지원, 학부모 네트워크로 측정된 가정의 사회자본의 경우 영어학업성취 초기치와 변화율 모두에 미치는 직접적인 효과는 유의미하지 않았으나 학생의 영어학습태도와 성취열망을 매개로 영어학업성취 초기치와 이후의 발달 과정에 지속적으로 유의한 효과를 주고 있었다. 즉, 학부모가 가지는 자녀에 대한 기대와 학습 지원 정도, 학부모간 네트워크의 강도는 그 자체로서 학생의 영어학업성취를 결정짓는 것이 아니라 학생의 동기와 학업적 자기효능감, 성취열망에 영향을 주고 이를 통해 다시 학생의 학업성취에 영향을 미치는 것이다.
    넷째, 학생의 영어학습태도와 성취열망은 영어학업성취에 유의미한 정적 영향을 미치고 있었다. 즉, 영어에 대한 자기효능감이 높을수록, 영어에 대한 내재적 동기가 강할수록 학생의 성취열망, 영어학업성취도와 이후의 향상도가 높았으며, 직업 및 교육 포부 수준과 같은 성취열망이 높을수록 영어학업성취도가 높았고 역시 이후의 향상도 역시 큰 것으로 나타났다.
    다섯째, 학생의 사회심리적 변인들은 영어학업성취에 미치는 가정배경의 영향을 매개하고 있었다. 즉, 학생의 영어학습태도와 성취열망은 부모의 사회경제적지위, 가정의 문화자본, 가정의 사회자본이 영어학업성취에 미치는 영향을 매개하고 있었으며 이후 영어학업성취 변화에 있어서도 대체로 비슷한 양상을 보이고 있었다.
    여섯째, 학생의 가정 배경과 영어학업성취 간 구조적 관계 양상은 남학생과 여학생 간에 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 즉, 부모의 사회경제적지위, 가정의 문화자본 및 사회자본의 영어학업성취 결정 과정에 있어서 남학생과 여학생 간 차이가 없었다. 또한, 학생의 가정배경이 학생의 사회심리적 변인을 통해 영어학업성취에 미치는 영향에 있어서도 남녀 학생 간 차이는 발견되지 않았다.
    끝으로, 부모의 사회경제적지위, 가정의 문화자본, 사회자본과 같은 귀속적 요인들이 영어학업성취에 미치는 효과는 한 시기에만 일시적으로 나타나는 것이 아니라 학생의 3년간의 영어학업성취 발달 과정에 누적되어 나타나고 있었다. 즉, 학생의 가정배경은 영어학업성취 결정과정에 지속적이며 누적적으로 차별적인 영향력을 행사하고 있었고 이로 인해 사회계층간에 영어교육격차가 발생하고 있었다.
