국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구의 목적은 가족의 사회경제적 배경과 가족구조를 포함한 가족환경이 자녀의 과외여부와 국어, 수학, 영어성적에, 그리고 과외가 이들 성적에 어떤 영향을 주는가를 살펴보는 데 있다. 서울의 남녀 중학생을 대상으로 한 서베이조사에서 나온 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 과외의 경우, 소득이 많고 형제자매수가 적을수록 국어, 영어, 수학의 모든 과목에 대해 선택의 가능성이 높으며, 그리고 과목에 따라 부분적으로 아버지교육과 어머니의 가르침이 많고, 여학생보다는 남학생이 선택의 가능성이 높다. 성적의 경우, 전체 과목에 대해 아버지교육과 아버지직업의 전문관리직(판매생산직 기준), 영어과외는 긍정적으로, 어머니취업은 부정적으로 영향을 미치며, 그리고 과목에 따라 소득과 성은 긍정적으로, 아버지의 가르침과 형제자매수는 부정적으로 차별적인 영향을 미친다. 둘째, 과외는 부분적으로 가족환경과 성적의 매개변수로 작용한다. 셋째, 성적에 대한 과외의 효과는 영어에서만 나타난다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to examine how family environment including socioeconomic background and family structure influences children’s choice of taking private tutoring and school grades in Korean, mathematics, and English, and an effect of private tutoring on the school grades. The results derived from a sample of middle school students in Seoul show that the probability of taking private tutoring is related with family income and size, father’s education, mother’s teaching, and sex. School grades are associated with father’s education, occupation and teaching, English private tutoring, mother’s employment, family income and size, and sex. Private tutoring is partially working as an intermediate variable between family environment and school grades. Among the three private tutoring, only the English tutoring has a partial effect on school grades.
