Purpose : We try to disclose how much the keywords of the papers from the Korean Journal of Emergency Medical Services with Medical Subject Headings(MeSH) terminologies and to understand the major subjects of the recent emergency medical technology research in Korea from keywords. Methods : We analyzed keywords from 524 articles of the Korean Journal of Emergency Medical Services that were published between 2005 and 2011. We investigated frequently used keywords and what percentages of keywords agree with MeSH terms using the MeSH browser. Results : There were on average 3.2 keywords per article. The most frequent key words were AED, Attitude, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, CPR, EMT, EMT students, External Defibrillator, Job satisfaction, Knowledge, 119 EMT in order. The number of terms in precise agreement with MeSH headings was 101(19.3%); 327 terms(62.4%) were not found in the MeSH browser and 96 terms(18.3%) partially matched MeSH terms. Conclusion : Many keywords used in the Korean Journal of Emergency Medical Services did not agree with MeSH terms. We conclude that contribution rules should be using MeSH terms and authors should be educated in the proper use of MeSH terms in their research and subsequent publication.

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the consultation status and request level of paramedic students. The findings were expected to offer basic data for establishing consultation plans that meet the demands of students. Methods: Questionnaires were distributed among 153 students at two universities, and analyses were conducted based on the responses of 140 students. Results: The preferred counselor was the advising professor. The most common response was that holding two consultation sessions per semester was the most ideal. Regarding topic of consultation, career and employment scored the highest preference. Conclusion: Students had high request levels for consultation. Given the diversity in the themes of consultation, schools, should improve the capacities of advising and other professors in the department for professional consultation.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the role of life stress in the relation between health behaviors and bioethics awareness among paramedic students. Methods: This study recruited 238 paramedic students in F and R areas as participants. Multiple regression analysis was performed using Baron and Kenny's three-step procedure. Results: In the first stage, health behaviors had a significant effect on life stress (β=-.202, p<.01). In the second stage, health behaviors had a significant effect on bioethics awareness (β=.240, p<.001). In the third stage, life stress had a significant influence on bioethics awareness (β=-.167, p<.01). In the fourth stage, the regression coefficient of the third stage (β=.137) was less than that of the second stage (β=.159). In addition, when controlling for life stress, health behavior was shown to affect bioethics awareness (β=.206, p<.01). The mediating effect of life stress was found to be significant in the relation between health behavior and bioethics awareness (Z=2.04, p<.05). Conclusion: As health behavior is a factor that affects bioethics awareness through the mediation of living stress, universities should prepare training programs to improve the health behavior and reduce the life stress among students.

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the quality of communication between paramedic students and their patients in clinical practice and to provide the students with the data, thus contributing to the qualitative improvement of communication. Methods: Data were collected from experienced paramedic students who consented online to participate in this study. The data collection period was from June 3 to July 12, 2022, and a total of 147 questionnaires with 92 questions were analyzed using SPSS statistics 28.0. Results: The number of students attending the lecture series as part of a communication credit accounted for 57.1% of the total. 92.5% of subjects responded yes to the necessity of education for communication. The level of total communication ability of subjects was 4.60 (±1.05) points (7 Likert scale). Among the subdivided levels of communication ability, the highest level was a physical examination-related interview (5.36±0.96), and the lowest was the completion part (3.93±1.51). There was a statistically significant difference in communication ability level according to school grade (F=4.709, p=.000). The highest correlation (r=.972, p<.001) showed between total communication ability and understanding of the point of view of the patient. Conclusion: Paramedic students work on their communication schools to be a better paramedic for patients. More educational content with a field-based situation in communication subject needs to be developed. Purpose: This study aimed to identify the level of communication ability between paramedic students and patients in clinical practice. In addition, it was performed to produce essential data contributing to the qualitative improvement of communication ability. Methods: Data were collected from paramedic students with clinical experience after they provided online consent. Data collection was performed from June 3 to July 12, 2022. One hundred forty-seven questionnaires with 92 items were analyzed using SPSS statistics 28.0. Results: 57.1% of students took communication as a subject despite 92.5% of respondents saying that communication education is necessary for them. The average level of participant communication ability was 4.60 (±1.05) points (measured on a 7-point Likert scale). Among the subdivided communication ability levels, the highest level was demonstrated in the physical examination-related interview (5.36±0.96), and the lowest was shown in the completion part (3.93±1.51). Furthermore, a statistically significant difference was found in communication ability level according to school grade (F=4.709, p=.000). The highest correlation (r=.972, p<.001) was obtained between total communication ability and understanding the patient’s point of view. Conclusion: Paramedic students should improve their communication skills to serve patients more effectively. Finally, more educational content should be developed on field-based situations in communication courses.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the status of emergency care of pregnant women transported by paramedics, to analyze the knowledge of paramedics related to pregnant women and their self-confidence in emergency care, and to provide foundational data to improve the quality of emergency care for pregnant women. Methods: We received a total of 1,798 rescue logs from 119 paramedics, who had transported pregnant women, in I city from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2018. For survey analysis, we used the 164 questionnaires received from these paramedics from June 15 to August 14, 2019. Results: The analysis of the rescue logs revealed that 85.5% (1,537 individuals) either had disease symptoms or were pregnant, whereas only 14.5% (261 individuals) had traffic accidents or accident-related injuries. The mean knowledge of the paramedics related to pregnant women was 23.73 (±2.98) points, and the mean self-confidence in emergency care was 3.19 (±0.74) points. Knowledge of the paramedics about pregnant women and their self-confidence in emergency care of these women had a statistically significant positive correlation (r=.306, p=.000). Conclusion: Paramedics should be provided theoretical and practical training through various programs about the emergency care of pregnant women.
