Comparative Analysis on Antioxidative Ability of Muscle between Laiwu Pig and Large White
Chen, Wei,Zhu, Hong-Lei,Shi, Yuan,Zhao, Meng-Meng,Wang, Hui,Zeng, Yong-Qing Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2012 Animal Bioscience Vol.25 No.8
This study was conducted to evaluate effects of storage temperatures ($4^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$) and pig breeds (Laiwu pig and Large White pig) on the main antioxidative enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) activity and lipid oxidation in porcine Longissimus dorsi muscle. Activities of antioxidative enzymes (AOE) decreased slightly during storage, regardless of storage temperatures. Muscle antioxidative enzymes activities stored at $4^{\circ}C$ were higher than that stored at $20^{\circ}C$. Laiwu pig's enzymes activities were significantly (p<0.01) higher than Large White's. The level of malondialdehyde is a direct expression of the grade of lipid oxidation in meat. In our study, the malondialdehyde contents increased after 6 days storage. However, malondialdehyde contents of Laiwu pig were significantly (p<0.01) lower than Large White's. A lower content of malondialdehyde corresponds to a lower oxidation of lipids. These results indicated the muscle antioxidative ability of Laiwu pig was higher than Large White pig. It also implied that antioxidative enzymes were involved in the essentials and deciding mechanisms of meat quality by quenching oxygen free radicals and inhibiting lipid oxidation in muscle.

In MMC-HVDC (modular multilevel converter-based high-voltage direct current) applications, conventional control methods have defects such as complicated control and difficulty in controlling the internal energy of the converter. To ensure the safe and stable operation of an MMC-HVDC system, the problem of uneven internal energy distribution and increased fluctuations in the modular multilevel converter under asymmetrical network voltage conditions must be addressed. This paper has designed, a novel model predictive control (MPC) for MMC-HVDC applications. Through the proposed strategy, the switching states of all the MMC units can be optimized, which eliminates the circulating currents and achieves a voltage balance of the capacitor by redundant switching states. Moreover, an energy control circuit is established to adjust the DC bus power distribution in the MMC three-phase bridge arm. Thus, the symmetrical ac-side current can be realized, and the MMC internal energy imbalance caused by the transient process of the system can be avoided. Finally, the proposed novel predictive control strategy is tested via a case study. The obtained simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

A better understanding of the tensile performance and tensile failure mechanism of cement paste is significant in preventing rock reinforcement failure. Therefore, this paper aims to reveal the tensile performance and failure mechanism of a modified Portland cement: Stratabinder HS cement. To achieve this objective, the split tensile test was conducted on specimens followed by simulating the failure mechanism numerically. The results indicated that the water–cement rate significantly influenced the tensile performance of the cement paste. When the water–cement rate increased from 0.35 to 0.42, the tensile strength declined from 1.9 MPa to 1.5 MPa. It was also observed that vertical tensile failure constantly occurred regardless of the water–cement rate. During the testing process, tensile cracks and shear cracks occurred. The increasing rate in the number of specimen cracks was dependent on the tensile stress state. Before the tensile stress reached the peak, the crack quantity increased slightly. After the peak, the crack quantity increased dramatically. During the vertical loading process, horizontal tensile stress occurred in the specimen. This horizontal tensile stress zone showed a diamond shape. The higher the tensile stress is, the larger the area of the horizontal tensile stress zone. When the tensile strength was reached, horizontal tensile stress mainly concentrated at the vertical centre of the specimen. This finally led to tensile failure of the specimen. This paper indicated that the water–cement rate was the key factor in evaluating the tensile strength of the Stratabinder HS cement.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most life- and health-threatening malignant diseases worldwide, especially in China. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have emerged as important regulators of tumorigenesis and tumor progression. However, the roles and mechanisms of lncRNAs in ESCC require further exploration. Here, in combination with a small interfering RNA (siRNA) library targeting specific lncRNAs, we performed MTS and Transwell assays to screen functional lncRNAs that were overexpressed in ESCC. TMPO-AS1 expression was significantly upregulated in ESCC tumor samples, with higher TMPOAS1 expression positively correlated with shorter overall survival times. In vitro and in vivo functional experiments revealed that TMPO-AS1 promotes the proliferation and metastasis of ESCC cells. Mechanistically, TMPO-AS1 bound to fused in sarcoma (FUS) and recruited p300 to the TMPO promoter, forming biomolecular condensates in situ to activate TMPO transcription in cis by increasing the acetylation of histone H3 lysine 27 (H3K27ac). Targeting TMPO-AS1 led to impaired ESCC tumor growth in a patient-derived xenograft (PDX) model. We found that TMPO-AS1 is required for cell proliferation and metastasis in ESCC by promoting the expression of TMPO, and both TMPO-AS1 and TMPO might be potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets in ESCC.
