<P>Adopting the concept of procarrier for the first time, we demonstrated the controlled transport of chloride ions across lipid and cellular membranes. Procarriers containing highly hydrophilic appendages were initially inactive due to the lack of their partitioning into lipophilic membranes but were activated to transport chloride ions in the presence of specific enzymes that were able to hydrolyze off the appendages to generate an active carrier under specific conditions. Namely, the procarrier with an ester-bond-linked appendage was most activated by an esterase (PLE) at pH = 7.4, whereas the procarrier with a glycosyl-bond-linked appendage was activated only by a glycosylase (AOG) under slightly acidic conditions (pH = 5.5-6). In addition to controlling chloride transport, hydrophilic appendages greatly increase the water solubility of the procarrier, which may improve the deliverability of a hydrophobic active carrier into a plasma membrane.</P>
Sufficient Calorie Intake Ameliorates Cognitive Impairment in Alcoholic Liver Disease

Aims: Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease. And cognitive dysfunction is one of the complications and associated with calorie intake in ALD. However, relation between nutrition and cognitive function has not been fully evaluated. The aim of this study is to explore the effect of diet on cognitive function in ALD. Methods: A total of 43 patients were enrolled and neuropsychological tests assessed according to the nutritional state (BMI<21.7 and BMI≥21.7). In animal study, mice were sub-divided into 4 groups (n=9/group; control (5% EtOH liquid diet), low fat (5% EtOH+low fat diet), high fat (5% EtOH+high fat diet), and high protein (5% EtOH+high protein diet)) for 8 weeks. For the cognitive function, we performed T-maze study weekly before and after alcohol binge. Results: In the comparison of cognitive function (BMI<21.7 and BMI≥21.7), language score of Korea mini-mental state (7.37 ± 1.4 and 7.85 ± 0.4 P=0.04), rey-complex figure (72.0±25.9 and 58.4±33.6, P=0.05), boston naming (11.7±2.7 and 13.0±1.8, P=0.02), forward digit span (6.7±1 .8 and 7.5±1.6, P=0.04), Korean-color word stroop (24.2±26.5 and 43.6±32.4, P=0.006), interference score (33.9±31.9 and 52.3±33.9, P=0.02) showed high scores in BMI≥21.7 group. In the animal study on day 40, all groups shortened the time to find feed (low fat: P=0.004, high fat: P=0.02) compared to the control group. Interestingly, binge drinking mice reduced the time than before trained mice. Conclusions: ALD patients with BMI<21.7 enhance their cognitive dysfunction. Although it needs more studies which correlation of calorie intake and cognitive function, this study indicates that sufficient intake of calories provides major benefits for preventing cognitive dysfunction.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the housing mobility behavior according to the income change and to predict the probability of upward and downward movements. A binary logit model was used with the data which were obtained by the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements in 1989. The sample size was 1620 households in Seoul. The results of this study were as follows; the upward movement probability in rental housing or in single housing was higher than that in owned housing or in apartment housing as household income increased.

OBJECTIVES: We analyzed whether gender role stereotypes (GRS) and patriarchal attitudes are associated with cognitive function in an elderly community. METHODS: We analyzed data from 580 people enrolled in the Korean Social Life, Health, and Aging Project. The degrees to which respondents held stereotypical beliefs about gender roles and had patriarchal mindsets were measured using a questionnaire. Based on participants’ responses, we divided respondents into 2 groups—those with conservative mindsets and those with open mindsets—according to the median score for each of the 2 variables. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination, Korean version (MMSE-K). Cognitive impairment was defined as an MMSE-K score ≤21 points. Multivariable logistic regression was performed, adjusting for gender, age, socio-demographic and lifestyle factors, and social network size. Age and lifestyle factors were stratified. RESULTS: Compared to those with open mindsets, those with conservative mindsets regarding gender roles and patriarchal norms had adjusted odds ratios of 1.88 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.11 to 3.19) and 1.67 (95% CI, 1.00 to 2.79) for cognitive impairment, respectively. In the stratified analysis, subgroups with younger age and a good lifestyle maintained a protective association with cognitive impairment. CONCLUSIONS: GRS and a patriarchal mindset were marginally significantly associated with cognitive impairment among women later in life.

Background: Although gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) associates with many respiratory disorders such as bronchial asthma, chronic cough, chronic bronchitis, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, the association between GERD and lung functions is controversial and its association with lung function decline was rarely reported. This study was performed to evaluate the association of endoscopically diagnosed esophagitis (e-GERD) and lung function changes. Methods: From the Gene-environment interaction and phenotype (GENIE) cohort at Seoul national university hospital Gangnam center, patients with more than two spirometry results and two spirometry- matched endoscopy were included. E-GERD was defined when the reflux esophagitis was found persistently in two discrete endoscopic examinations. Spirometric changes of patients with e-GERD were compared with matched patients without e-GERD (ratio, 1:4). Annual FEV1 or FVC changes from baseline were estimated and compared with linear mixed regression model. Severity of e-GERD was assessed with Los Angeles (LA) classification. Results: Totally 1,050 patients (210 patients with e-GERD and their matched 840 controls) were included in final analysis. Median follow-up duration for spirometry was 6 years. In e-GERD patients, mild disease (LA, A grade) was most common (165 patients, 78.6%). The adjusted annual FEV1 change in patients with e-GERD was -51.8 ml/year while it decreased by 46.8 ml/year in controls (p=0.270). The adjusted annual FVC decline was numerically larger in GERD group than in controls without statistical significance (-55.8ml/year vs. -50.5ml/year, p=0.215). With the increase of severity in e-GERD, annual decline of FEV1 became larger in trend (-51 ml/year in LA classification A, -54.8 ml/ year in LA classification B, and -61.4 ml/year in LA classification C) without statistical significance. Also the annual decline of FVC showed similar trend. Conclusion: Comparing with controls, the annual decline of FEV1 or FVC were not statistically different in patients with e-GERD despite the more declining trend.

<P>Despite the increasing understanding of the stress‐responsive roles of zinc‐finger RNA‐binding proteins (RZs) in several plant species, such as <I>Arabidopsis thaliana</I>, wheat (<I>Triticum aestivum</I>) and rice (<I>Oryza sativa</I>), the functions of RZs in cabbage (<I>Brassica rapa</I>) have not yet been elucidated. In this study, the functional roles of the three RZ family members present in the cabbage genome, designated as <I>BrRZ1</I>, <I>BrRZ2</I> and <I>BrRZ3</I>, were investigated in transgenic Arabidopsis under normal and environmental stress conditions. Subcellular localization analysis revealed that all <I>BrRZ</I> proteins were exclusively localized in the nucleus. The expression levels of each <I>BrRZ</I> were markedly increased by cold, drought or salt stress and by abscisic acid (ABA) treatment. Expression of <I>BrRZ3</I> in Arabidopsis retarded seed germination and stem growth and reduced seed yield of Arabidopsis plants under normal growth conditions. Germination of <I>BrRZ2</I>‐ or <I>BrRZ3</I>‐expressing Arabidopsis seeds was delayed compared with that of wild‐type seeds under dehydration or salt stress conditions and cold stress conditions, respectively. Seedling growth of <I>BrRZ3</I>‐expressing transgenic Arabidopsis plants was significantly inhibited under salt, dehydration or cold stress conditions. Notably, seedling growth of all three <I>BrRZ</I>‐expressing transgenic Arabidopsis plants was inhibited upon ABA treatment. Importantly, all <I>BrRZ</I>s possessed RNA chaperone activity. Taken together, these results indicate that the three cabbage <I>BrRZ</I>s harboring RNA chaperone activity play diverse roles in seed germination and seedling growth of plants under abiotic stress conditions as well as in the presence of ABA.</P>

재난 상황 발생 시 정보 습득이 어려워 시각장애인의 경우 초동대응 시간을 놓치게 된다. 특히나 화재사고 사상자 중 사망자 비중이 장애인은 비장애인에 비해 약 4 배 ~ 5 배 더 높으며 현재까지도 사상자가 발생하여 중요한 사회문제로 논의되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기존의 스마트 대피 시스템의 한계점을 살펴보고 한계점을 개선할 수 있는 대안을 제시한다. 초동 시간 내에 사회복지사와 소방관이 사용자의 실시간 위치와 정보를 파악해 신고를 유도함과 동시에 자력 대피가 가능하도록 최적대피 경로를 능동적으로 결정하여 안내방송을 출력하는 시스템을 소개한다.
