Vertebral fractures occur with only slight trauma in patients with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). However, a lumbar vertebra fracture, due to an intraoperative body position has not been previously reported. An 87-year-old woman with kyphosis sustained a left trochanteric fracture of her femur. The patient was placed in a supine position during the operation. Postoperatively, the patient experienced severe right thigh pain. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an L4 vertebral fracture. Computed tomography revealed ankylosis from the upper thoracic spine to the sacrum. While in a supine position under general anesthesia, the contact of the patient’s lower back with operating table likely created a fulcrum at her lumbosacral spine acting as a long lever arm, bearing the mass of her upper body. We performed L1–S2 posterior stabilization. DISH patients with kyphosis placed in a supine position have an increased risk for lumbar vertebral fracture.
Unilateral rostral mandibulectomy for gingival vascular hamartoma in two calves

A 2-month-old female Holstein calf and a 5-month-old female Japanese black calf presented with gingival vascular hamartoma located in the interdental space between the second and third mandibular incisors in the right and left mandibles, respectively. On radiographic or computed tomographic images, osteolytic changes appeared within the mandibular bones adjacent to the masses. The masses were removed along with affected mandibular bone by using unilateral rostral mandibulectomy. After surgery, both cases exhibited a normal appetite and grew normally, with no cosmetic changes or recurrences. Unilateral rostral mandibulectomy can be applied for invasive gingival vascular hamartomas associated with osteolytic changes.
Effects of Aloe-emodin and Emodin on Proliferation of the MKN45 Human Gastric Cancer Cell Line

Aloe-emodin (1, 8-dihydroxy-3-hydroxyl-methylanthraquinone; AE) and emodin (1,3,8-trihydroxy-6-methylanthraquinone; EM) are anthraquinone derivatives that have been detected in some medical plants and share similar anthraquinone structures. AE and EM have been shown to exhibit anticancer activities in various cancer cell lines; however, the inhibitory effects of these derivatives on the growth of cancer cells were previously reported to be different. Gastric cancer is the second most common cause of cancer cell death worldwide. In the present study, we examined the inhibitory effects of 0.05 mM AE and 0.05 mM EM on the proliferation of the MKN45 human gastric cancer cell line. The proliferation of MKN45 cells was significantly inhibited in AE- and EM-treated groups 24 h and 48 h after treatment. Furthermore, the inhibitory effects of EM were stronger than those of AE. The cell cycle of MKN45 cells were arrested in G0/G1 phase or G0/G1 and G2/M phases by AE and EM, respectively. However, an analysis of intracellular polyamine levels and DNA fragmentation revealed that the mechanisms underlying cell death following cell arrest induced by AE and EM differed.

We have constructed the Mount Fuji submillimeter-wave telescope at Nishiyasugawara (alt. 3725 m) near the summit of Mt. Fuji (alt. 3774 m). Thanks to the excellent condition of Mt. Fuji, we have successfully carried out the [CI] survey toward more than 40 square degrees of sky, including qrion MC, Taurus MC, Rosetta MC, DR 15, DR 21, NGC 1333, NGC 2264, W 3, W 44, W 51, L 134, p-Oph. Our [CI] survey have revealed that the [CI] 492 GHz emission widely extends to the molecular clouds. The spatial and velocity structures of the [CI] 492 GHz emission resemble those of 13CO J=l-0 in many molecular clouds, implying that [CI] 492 GHz and $^{13}CO$ J=1-0 are emitted from the same gas. The column density of $C^o$ linearly correlates with that of CO up to high Av, suggesting that $C^o$ exist in the deep interior of molecular clouds. In several regions, we have found that the distributions of $C^o$ and CO are different from each other. The $C^o$-rich area is found in the Hieles' cloud 2. The C+/CO/$C^o$ configuration is found in DR 15, p-Oph, M 17, Orion KL, and NGC 1333. These results indicate that an origin of $C^o$ is unrelated with the photodissociation process. We discuss the observed $C^o$ distributions in relation to the non-equilibrium chemistry.
ATOMIC CARBON IN THE W 3 GIANT MOLECULAR CLOUD

We have mapped the W 3 giant molecular cloud in the $C^o\;^3P_1-^3 P_o$ ([CI]) line with the Mount Fuji Submillimeter-wave Telescope. The [CI] emission is extended over the molecular cloud, having peaks at three star forming clouds; W 3(Main), W 3(OH), and AFGL 333. The [CI] emission is found to be strong in the AFGL 333 cloud. We have also observed the $C^{18}O,\;CCS,\;N_2H^+$, and $H^{13}CO^+$ lines by using the Nobeyama Radio Observatory 45 m telescope. In the AFGL 333 cloud, we find two massive cores, which are highly gravitationally bound and have no sign of active star formation. The high [$C^o$]/[CO] and [CCS]/[$N_2H^+$] abundance ratios suggest that the AFGL 333 cloud is younger than the W 3(Main) and W 3(OH) clouds.
Characteristic evaluations of microwave absorbers using dielectric and magnetic composite materials

A microwave absorber for use in an electronic toll collection(ETC) device, having a central frequency of 5.8 GHz, is fabricated using a composite of magnetic (iron, Fe (coated by Fe3O4), made from Carbonyl Iron, Fe(CO)5) and dielectric (titanium oxide, TiO2) material. The reflection loss in free space, using a circularly polarized wave, was −20 dB or more around a central frequency of 5.8 GHz at incident angles of up to 60o, which satisfies the necessary conditions for ETC use in JAPAN. In this study, we explain the characteristic evaluations of microwave absorbers by changing the weight ratio of Fe/TiO2 composite materials (Fe/TiO2 = 100/0-0/100) and incidence characteristics of the transverse electric wave (TE wave), the transverse magnetic wave (TM wave) and the circularly polarized wave (CP wave) in a free-space without a characteristic deterioration. In addition, we show the experimental results by changing the arrangement of microwave absorber that also satisfied a necessary condition for ETC use.
