We present a measurement of the energy spectrum of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays performed by the Telescope Array experiment using monocular observations from its two new FADC-based fluorescence detectors. After a short description of the experiment, we describe the data analysis and event reconstruction procedures. Since the aperture of the experiment must be calculated by Monte Carlo simulation, we describe this calculation and the comparisons of simulated and real data used to verify the validity of the aperture calculation. Finally, we present the energy spectrum calculated from the merged monocular data sets of the two FADC-based detectors, and also the combination of this merged spectrum with an independent, previously published monocular spectrum measurement performed by Telescope Array's third fluorescence detector [T. Abu-Zayyad et al., The energy spectrum of Telescope Array's middle drum detector and the direct comparison to the high resolution fly's eye experiment, Astroparticle Physics 39 (2012) 109-119, http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.astropartphys.2012.05.012, Available from: <arXiv:1202.5141>]. This combined spectrum corroborates the recently published Telescope Array surface detector spectrum [T. Abu-Zayyad, et al., The cosmic-ray energy spectrum observed with the surface detector of the Telescope Array experiment, ApJ 768 (2013) L1, http://dx.doi.org/10.1088/2041-8205/768/1/L1, Available from: <arXiv:1205.5067>] with independent systematic uncertainties.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>We have recently reported on an indication of the strange tribaryon state, S+, with a mass M∼3140 MeV/c2 and width Γ<23 MeV/c2, in the neutron time-of-flight (TOF) spectrum of the He4(K<I>stop</I>−,nπ±) reaction of the KEK-PS E471 experiment in a search for the deeply bound narrow K−ppn (total isospin T=0) state. In an attempt to confirm the state and search for other possible T=0, 1 tribaryonic states, we have re-measured the neutron energy spectrum of the same reaction in the KEK-PS E549 experiment with an upgraded setup for which the TOF resolution was improved 1.5 times and the statistics was increased 6 times. However, in the neutron spectra, we find such a smooth distribution that we conclude the state is either not so strong to stick out of the inclusive background or too broad to be identified as a distinct peak. We estimated the upper limits of the formation probability of the possible tribaryonic state for three widths, 0, 20, and 40 MeV/c2. The obtained upper limit (95% CL) for a state as narrow as 20 MeV/c2 is at most 1% per stopped kaon over the wide mass range of 3000–3200 MeV/<I>c</I>2, while it reaches to 4∼5% at around 3140 MeV/<I>c</I>2 for Γ⩾40 MeV/c2, implying the possible existence of unknown processes including tribaryonic formation.</P>

A new high-spin isomer in the neutron-rich nucleus 128Cd was populated in the projectile fission of a 238U beam at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN. A half-life of T½=6.3(8) ms was measured for the new state which was tentatively assigned a spin/parity of (15-). The experimental results are compared to shell model calculations performed using state-of-the-art realistic effective interactions and to the neighbouring nucleus 129Cd. In the present experiment no evidence was found for the decay of a 18+E6 spin-trap isomer, based on the complete alignment of the two-neutron and two-proton holes in the 0h1½ and the 0g9/2 orbit, respectively, which is predicted to exist by the shell model.

The Telescope Array's Middle Drum fluorescence detector was instrumented with telescopes refurbished from the High Resolution Fly's Eye's HiRes-1 site. The data observed by Middle Drum in monocular mode was analyzed via the HiRes-1 profile-constrained geometry reconstruction technique and utilized the same calibration techniques enabling a direct comparison of the energy spectra and energy scales between the two experiments. The spectrum measured using the Middle Drum telescopes is based on a three-year exposure collected between December 16, 2007 and December 16, 2010. The calculated difference between the spectrum of the Middle Drum observations and the published spectrum obtained by the data collected by the HiRes-1 site allows the HiRes-1 energy scale to be transferred to Middle Drum. The HiRes energy scale is applied to the entire Telescope Array by making a comparison between Middle Drum monocular events and hybrid events that triggered both Middle Drum and the Telescope Array's scintillator ground array.

The interaction of short intense laser pulses with clusters enhanced the absorption of the incident laser light compared to solid targets. Due to the increased absorption, these targets are heated significantly, leading to enhanced emission of X-rays and generation of multiply charged ions with kinetic energies from tens of keV to tens of MeV. Possible applications of these targets include an X-ray source for microscopy or lithography and an ion source for table-top accelerators. The recent results obtained in Kansai Photon Science Institute for the short, moderate intensity, ~5 × 1017W/cm2, laser pulses interactions with large clusters, are presented. Applications of a femtosecondlaser-plasma cluster-based source for different types of nanostructure imaging are discussed.

The neutron-rich carbon isotopes ^(19,17)C and a boron isotope ^(14)B are investigated respectively via proton inelastic and charge-exchange reactions on a liquid hydrogen target at around 70 MeV/nucleon at RIKEN. The invariant mass method in inverse kinematics involving coincidence detection of a charged fragment and a neutron both emitted at forward angles is employed to map the energy spectrum above the neutron decay threshold. Several resonance structures are revealed in the invariant mass spectra, and the nature for some of them is discussed from comparisons of differential cross section data with predictions of microscopic DWBA calculations based on spsdpf shell model wave functions and a recent parametrization of semi-microscopic nucleon-nucleus optical model potential (JLMB). By extrapolating the (p,n) cross sections leading to the 1^+ state at 1.27 MeV in ^(141)B to zero momentum transfer the Gamow-Teller transition strength is deduced. The value is found to compare well with that reported in a β-delayed neutron emission study.

We have measured both the mesonic and nonmesonic weak decay widths of ^(12)_ΛC. For the mesonic decay, we have improved the accuracy of Γ_π^0 so that it reduced the error of Γ_(nm) from ≥10% to ≤5%. For the nonmesonic decay, we have solved the long standing Γ_n/Γ_p puzzle by measuring the ratio 0.51 ± 0.14 in the exclusive measurement. At the same time we have measured the width of the 3-body nonmesonic decay Γ_(2N) = 0.27 ± 0.13 for the first time. Combining the accurate Γ_n/Γ_p ratio and the first measured value Γ_(2N), we have finally obtained the Γ_n and Γ_p themselves taking account of the 3-body process. We have measured all the weak decay widths of _(12)_ΛC so that it provides the first complete set of widths for the investigation of ΔS = 1 baryon-baryon weak interaction.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>We have measured the angular correlation of the pair nucleons <I>np</I> and <I>nn</I> emitted from the nonmesonic weak decay (NMWD) of 12<I>Λ</I>C produced via the (π+,K+) reaction in coincidence measurement. The Λp→np and Λn→nn modes were clearly identified by measuring the back-to-back correlation of the emitted nucleon pairs which is the characteristic of two-body kinematics. From the measured nucleon pair numbers Nnn and Nnp, the ratio Γn/Γp of the partial decay widths Γn(Λn→nn) and Γp(Λp→np) of 12<I>Λ</I>C was extracted to be 0.51±0.13(stat)±0.05(syst); this result is almost free from the ambiguity due to the nuclear final state interaction and 3-body decay process, which were inherent in the previous results. The obtained Γn/Γp ratio of 12<I>Λ</I>C (<I>p</I>-shell) is close to that of 5<I>Λ</I>He (<I>s</I>-shell). The results are consistent with those of recent theoretical calculations.</P>
