We have succeeded in preparing single crystalline lms of BaFeO3, which may contain unusual Fe4+ ions, on (100) SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser beam deposition. The RHEED patterns for the lms on the (100) substrates apparently show a C4 symmetry, suggesting that the sample had a pseudo-cubic perovskite structure rather than hexagonal unit cell. The (100) epitaxially grown lms were found to be highly insulating, up to the leakage current density lower than 1 A/cm2 at the bias voltage of ..1:5 V. In addition, the lms showed a high value of dielectric constant of " = 59, and relatively small dissipation factor of about 0.07 at 100 kHz. The samples were also revealed to have a remanent magnetization at 300 K.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>One-neutron knockout from <SUP>24</SUP>O leading to the first excited state in <SUP>23</SUP>O has been measured for a proton target at a beam energy of 62 MeV/nucleon. The decay energy spectrum of the neutron unbound state of <SUP>23</SUP>O was reconstructed from the measured four momenta of the <SUP>22</SUP>O fragment and emitted neutron. A sharp peak was found at <SUB> E decay </SUB> = 50 ± 3 keV , corresponding to an excited state in <SUP>23</SUP>O at 2.78 ± 0.11 MeV , as observed in previous measurements. The longitudinal momentum distribution for this state was consistent with <I>d</I>-wave neutron knockout, providing support for a <SUP> J π </SUP> assignment of 5 / <SUP> 2 + </SUP> . The associated spectroscopic factor was deduced to be <SUP> C 2 </SUP> S ( 0 <SUB> d 5 / 2 </SUB> ) = 4.1 ± 0.4 by comparing the measured cross section ( σ − 1 n exp = 61 ± 6 mb ) with a distorted wave impulse approximation calculation. Such a large occupancy for the neutron 0 <SUB> d 5 / 2 </SUB> orbital is in line with the N = 16 shell closure in <SUP>24</SUP>O.</P>
Astrophysically Important 26Si States Studied with the 28Si(4He,6He)26Si Reaction

The emission of a 1.809-MeV γ-ray from the first excited state of 26Mg, followed by β-decay of 26Al in its ground state (denoted as 26Alg.s.), has been identied by several gamma-ray telescopes. To resolve the controversy over the possible sources of the observational 1.809-MeV γ-rays, one needs accurate knowledge of the production rate of 26Alg.s.. The 25Al(p,γ)26Si reaction is one of the most important astrophysical reactions to be investigated, but its rate is uncertain due to the lack of level information on 26Si above the proton threshold (Qpγ = 5.518 MeV). Illiadis et al. suggested that the 25Al(p,γ)26Si reaction should be dominated by a 3+ unnatural parity state at Ex = 5970 keV. Recent studies proposed several states as candidates for the 3+ states. However, the spin-parity assignments for these states are still uncertain. In the present work, we measured the 28Si(4He,6He)26Si reaction at 120 MeV to confirm the unnatural parity states just above the proton threshold. The measurement was performed with the high-resolution particle analyzer at the Center for Nuclear Study, University of Tokyo. We observed a total of 22 excited states in 26Si. The 7018-keV level, which was only observed by Bardayan et al. with the 28Si(p; t)26Si reaction, was confirmed in our measurement. Among the candidates of unnatural parity states at Ex = 5678, 5916, and 5945 keV, the 5918-keV state was only observed within the error of the excitation energy. A new state at Ex = 6101 keV was also identified.

The neutron-rich carbon isotopes ^(19,17)C and a boron isotope ^(14)B are investigated respectively via proton inelastic and charge-exchange reactions on a liquid hydrogen target at around 70 MeV/nucleon at RIKEN. The invariant mass method in inverse kinematics involving coincidence detection of a charged fragment and a neutron both emitted at forward angles is employed to map the energy spectrum above the neutron decay threshold. Several resonance structures are revealed in the invariant mass spectra, and the nature for some of them is discussed from comparisons of differential cross section data with predictions of microscopic DWBA calculations based on spsdpf shell model wave functions and a recent parametrization of semi-microscopic nucleon-nucleus optical model potential (JLMB). By extrapolating the (p,n) cross sections leading to the 1^+ state at 1.27 MeV in ^(141)B to zero momentum transfer the Gamow-Teller transition strength is deduced. The value is found to compare well with that reported in a β-delayed neutron emission study.
Association of a polymorphism of BTN2A1 with myocardial infarction in East Asian populations

Objective: We have performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify genetic variants that confer susceptibility to myocardial infarction (MI) in Japanese and Korean populations. Methods: A total of 17,447 Japanese or Korean individuals from four independent subject panels was examined. Japanese subject panels A, B, and C comprised 134 individuals with MI and 137 controls, 1431 individuals with MI and 3161 controls, and 643 individuals with MI and 1347 controls, respectively, whereas the Korean population comprised 1880 individuals with MI and 8714 controls. A GWAS for MI was performed in Japanese subject panel A with the use of the Affymetrix GeneChip Human Mapping 500K Array Set. Results: Seventy single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) significantly (P<1.0x10<SUP>-7</SUP>) associated with MI by the GWAS were examined further in Japanese subject panel B, revealing two SNPs (rs6929846 of BTN2A1, rs2569512 of ILF3) to be significantly (P<0.0007) associated with MI. The rs6929846 SNP of BTN2A1, but not rs2569512 of ILF3, was also significantly associated with MI in Japanese subject panel C. However, the association of neither rs6929846 nor rs2569512 with MI was replicated in the Korean population. Conclusion: BTN2A1 may be a susceptibility gene for MI in Japanese individuals.
