This study was conducted to investigate the influence of pork quality pigs which were fed with diets supplemented with fermented sawdust and sardin powder oil. The pigs were randomly assigned to one of the four treatments: a), control (commercial feed); b), T1 (30% fermented sawdust); c), T2 (10% sardin powder oil) d), T3 (30% fermented sawdust, l0% sardin powder oil and 30% limited amino acid) from 30 kg to 110 kg B. Wt. and slaughtered. The samples were stored at 0±1 C. The physico-chemical properties were determined at the dust of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 15. For the loin the pH's of all the treatments on the 15th day were higher than those of the 2nd day, and that of TI was higher than those of the others. The total moisture contents of all treatments decreased with the storage (P$lt;0.05), and there were no significant differences among treatments on the 15th day. The water soluble proteins of all treatments increased with time and were highest on the 8th day and decreased gianibicanth thereater. T1 had significantly higher water soluble protein than others(P$lt;0.05). The salt soluble proteins of all treatments increased with lure the days(P$lt;0.05). T1 had higher salt soluble protein than others during the storage period(P$lt;0.05). The brittleness, hardness, cohesiveness, gumminess and chewiness of all the treatments were not significantly different among during the period, but elasticity of them increased after from the 2nd day. The brittleness of control was higher than that of the others on the 15th day, and the hardness and chewiness of control were higher than those of the others on the 6th day(P$lt;0.05). Forthebelly the pH's of all the treatments on the 15th day were higher than those of the at 2nd day(P$lt;0.05). T1 showed higher pH than the others during the period(P$lt;0.05). The total moisture contents of control and T1 were significantly decreased with time and there were no significant differences between T2 and T3. T1 showed the highest value. The water soluble proteins of all the treatments decreased with time and was lower on the 15th day(P$lt;0.05). That of control and T1 was significantly higher than that of others on the 2nd day, but there were no significant differences among the treatments on the 15th day. The salt soluble proteins of all treatments increased with time (P$lt;0.05), and they were highest on the 15th day. T1 had significantly higher salt soluble protein than the others on the 8th and 15th days.

Nine Cheju Native Horses with an average weight of 169.2㎏ were used in a 238-d (34-wk) fattening trial designed to evaluate the effects of feeding method on growth performance and carcass characteristics. Horses were randomly alloted to three treatment groups: T₁ 6-wk (Former fattening period: FFP) + 28-wk (Latter fattening period: LFP), T₂, 9-wk (FFP) + 25-wk (LFP), T₃, 12-wk (FFP) + 22-wk (LFP). During the FFP, concentrate was restricted at approximately l.5% of their body weights but horses were allowed ad libitum access to concentrate during the subsequent LFP. The horses were individually penned in 2.5-m×3-m pipe stalls with front feeding gates. They were allowed 3 h of exercise in a pen (50-m×30-m) outside the barn monthly. Horses were weighed at 30-d intervals and feed consumption was measured daily. At the end of the 238-d fattening period, one horse in each treatment was selected randomly and slaughtered for meat quality evaluation. Results obtained from the present study were summarized as follows; during the overall fattening period, average daily gains (ADG) and nutrient intake (TDN) per ㎏ wt, gain were 0.59, 5.10(T₁), 0.51, 5.84(T₂) and 0.43, 6.37㎏(T₂), respectively. When horses were allowed ad libitum access to concentrate for 28 wk(T₁), ADG and feed efficiency(TDN) were improved by 37%(P$gt;.05) and20%(P$gt;.05)compared to those allowed concentrate free choice for 22 wk(T₃). Horse in T, group had an improved dressing percentage and carcass weight with good quality grades(intramuscular fat, meat color, fat color). Taste panelists(150 amateures) detected no difference from longissimus lumborum steaks between Cheju Native Horse and improved Cheju Native Cattle, but found juiciness and meat flavor were superior to those of beef.

Adenovirus-mediated gene transfer of interleukin-23 shows prophylactic but not therapeutic antitumor effects

A novel cytokine interleukin (IL)-23 bears a structural and functional resemblance to IL-12. A recombinant adenovirus expressing IL-23N220L (recombinant replication-defective adenovirus (rAd)/IL-23N220L) that selectively secrets IL-23 was constructed and compared with rAd/IL-12N220L in terms of immunological and antitumor effects. In a prophylactic setting, vaccination with rAd/ovalbumin (OVA) and rAd/IL-23N220L enhanced OVA-specific CD8<SUP>+</SUP> T-cell responses that were closely associated with complete protection against the subsequent challenge of OVA-expressing E.G7 thymoma. However, in a therapeutic setting, the intratumoral injection of rAd/IL-23N220L showed only marginal antitumor activity against several established tumors such as E.G7, CT26 and B16F10. Interestingly, whereas IL-23 still induced tumor-specific CD8<SUP>+</SUP> T-cell responses, it could not activate natural killer (NK) cells in vitro and in vivo. In addition, the adoptive transfer of activated NK cells partially restored the therapeutic antitumor effect of IL-23, indicating that NK cells are one of the crucial factors responsible for the regression of established tumors. Volumetric Measurements of Lung Nodules with Multi-Detector Row CT: Effect of Changes in Lung Volume

Objective: To evaluate how changes in lung volume affect volumetric measurements of lung nodules using a multi-detector row CT. Materials and Methods: Ten subjects with asthma or chronic bronchitis who had one or more lung nodules were included. For each subject, two sets of CT images were obtained at inspiration and at expiration. A total of 33 nodules (23 nodules 3 mm) were identified and their volume measured using a semiautomatic volume measurement program. Differences between nodule volume on inspiration and expiration were compared using the paired t-test. Percent differences, between on inspiration and expiration, in nodule attenuation, total lung volume, whole lung attenuation, and regional lung attenuation, were computed and compared with percent difference in nodule volume determined by linear correlation analysis. Results: The difference in nodule volume observed between inspiration and expiration was significant (p < 0.01); the mean percent difference in lung nodule volume was 23.1% for all nodules and for nodules 3 mm. The volume of nodules was measured to be larger on expiration CT than on inspiration CT (28 out of 33 nodules; 19 out of 23 nodules 3 mm). A statistically significant correlation was found between the percent difference of lung nodule volume and lung volume or regional lung attenuation (p < 0.05) for nodules 3 mm. Conclusion: Volumetric measurements of pulmonary nodules were significantly affected by changes in lung volume. The variability in this respiration-related measurement should be considered to determine whether growth has occurred in a lung nodule.

Six Newly Recorded Fungal Taxa from Freshwater Niche in Korea

Six interesting fungal strains were isolated during a survey of fungal diversity associated with freshwater; these strains were designated as CNUFC YJW2-22, CNUFC MSW11-6-2, CNUFC HRS5-3, CNUFC MSW242-6, CNUFC DMW2-2, and CNUFC CPWS-1. Based on a polyphasic approach including phylogenetic analyses of internal transcribed space (ITS), large subunit (LSU), beta-tubulin (BenA), and calmodulin (CaM) gene sequences, morphological analyses, the six strains were found to be identical to Acremonium guillematii, Cadophora novi-eboraci, Lectera nordwiniana, Mycoarthris corallina, Talaromyces siamensis, and Tetracladium globosum, respectively. To our knowledge, these are the first records of the rare Lectera, Mycoarthris, and Tetracladium genera in Korea, and the first reports of A. guillematii, C. novi-eboraci, L. nordwiniana, M. corallina, T. siamensis, and Te. globosum in a freshwater environment.

교액성심낭염에 있어서 P - pulmonale 2 예

교액성심낭염의 심전도소견으로 가장 흔한 이상은 저전위, T파 inversion, 좌심방비대 및 드물게는 심방세동을 동반한다. Dalton(1959)은 교액성심낭염 77례중 단 1례에서 P파가 2.5mm보다 크다고 보고한 바 있으며, Chambliss(1959)등은 61례중 좌심방비대는 한례도 없었다고 보고하였다. 저자들은 세브란스병원에 입원하여 교액성심낭염으로 확진되어 수술을 받은 소아 2예에 있어서 심전도상 좌심방비대 즉 P-pulmonale를 나타냈던 Two cases are presented in which constrictive pericardial disease demonstrated P-Pulmonale on the electrocardiogram. Both cases were in the pediatric age group and this may have been a factor in producing this unusual electrocardiographic finding.

Additions to the Knowledge of the Fungal Order Eurotiales in Korea: Eight Undescribed Species

Eurotiales is a relatively large order of Ascomycetes, well-known for their ability to producesecondary metabolites with potential beneficial applications. To understand their diversity anddistribution, different environmental sources including soil, freshwater, insect, and indoor airwere investigated. Eight strains of Eurotiales were isolated and identified based on theirmorphological characters and a multi-gene phylogenetic analysis of the ITS , BenA, CaM, andRPB2 regions. We identified eight taxa that were previously not reported from Korea: Aspergillusbaeticus, A. griseoaurantiacus, A. spinulosporus, Penicillium anthracinoglaciei, P. labradorum, P. nalgiovense, Talaromyces atroroseus, and T. georgiensis. Detailed descriptions, illustrations, andphylogenetic tree for the eight new records species are presented, and information regardingthe records is also discussed.
