Local-food-based complementary feeding for the nutritional status of children ages 6-36 months in rural areas of Indonesia

Susanto, Tantut,Syahrul, Syahrul,Sulistyorini, Lantin,Rondhianto, Rondhianto,Yudisianto, Alfi The Korean Pediatric Society 2017 Clinical and Experimental Pediatrics (CEP) Vol.60 No.10

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate a pilot project of the Nursing Feeding Center "Posyandu Plus" (NFCPP) through local food-based complementary feeding (LFCF) program designed to improve the nutritional status of children aged 6-36 months at community health centers in Indonesia. Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used to obtain data regarding the nutritional status of 109 children who participated in the project from 6 rural areas. The NFCPP was conducted for 9 weeks, comprising 2 weeks of preintervention, 6 weeks of intervention, and one week of postintervention. The LFCF intervention consisted of 12 sets of recipes to be made by mothers and given to their children 4 times daily over 6 weeks. The weight-for-age z score (WAZ), height-for-age z score (HAZ), weight-for-height z score (WHZ), and body mass index-for-age z score (BAZ) were calculated using World Health Organization Anthro Plus version 1.0.3. Results: LFCF intervention significantly increased WHZ, WAZ, and BAZ scores but decreased HAZ scores (P<0.001). Average scores of WHZ ($0.96{\pm}0.97$) and WAZ ($0.45{\pm}0.72$) increased; BAZ increased ($1.12{\pm}0.93$) after 6 weeks of LFCF. WAZ scores postintervention were 50.5% of normal, and WHZ scores were 77.1% of normal. However, the HAZ score decreased by $0.53{\pm}0.52$, which indicated 57.8% had short stature. Conclusion: The NFCPP program with LFCF intervention can improve the nutritional status of children in rural areas. It should be implemented as a sustained program for better provision of complementary feeding during the period of lactation using local food made available at community health centers.

Evaluation of Megasphaera elsdenii supplementation on rumen fermentation, production performance, carcass traits and health of ruminants: a meta-analysis

        Susanto Irwan,Wiryawan Komang Gede,Suharti Sri,Retnani Yuli,Zahera Rika,Jayanegara Anuraga 아세아·태평양축산학회 2023 Animal Bioscience Vol.36 No.6

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the use of Megasphaera elsdenii (M. elsdenii) as a probiotic on rumen fermentation, production performance, carcass traits and health of ruminants by integrating data from various related studies using meta-analysis. Methods: A total of 32 studies (consisted of 136 data points) were obtained and integrated into a database. The parameters integrated were fermentation products, rumen microbes, production performance, carcass quality, animal health, blood and urine metabolites. Statistical analysis of the compiled database used a mixed model methodology. Different studies were considered random effects, while M. elsdenii supplementation doses were considered fixed effects. p-values and the Akaike information criterion were employed as model statistics. The model was deemed significant at p<0.05 or had a tendency to be significant when p-value between 0.05<p<0.10. Results: Supplementation with M. elsdenii increased (p<0.05) some proportion of fermented rumen products such as propionate, butyrate, isobutyrate, and valerate, and significantly reduced (p<0.05) lactic acid concentration, acetate proportion, total bacterial population and methane emission. Furthermore, the probiotic supplementation enhanced (p<0.05) livestock production performance, especially in the average daily gain and body condition score. Regarding the carcass quality, hot carcass weight and carcass gain were elevated (p< 0.05) due to the M. elsdenii supplementation. Animal health also showed improvement as indicated by the lower (p<0.05) diarrhoea and bloat incidences as well as the liver abscess. However, M. elsdenii supplementation had negligible effects on blood and urine metabolites of ruminants. Conclusion: Supplementation of M. elsdenii is capable of decreasing ruminal lactic acid concentration, enhancing rumen health, elevating some favourable rumen fermentation products, and in turn, increasing production performance of ruminants.

      • Anionic Redox Activity as a Key Factor in the Performance Degradation of NaFeO2 Cathodes for Sodium Ion Batteries

        Susanto, Dieky,Cho, Min Kyung,Ali, Ghulam,Kim, Ji-Young,Chang, Hye Jung,Kim, Hyung-Seok,Nam, Kyung-Wan,Chung, Kyung Yoon American Chemical Society 2019 Chemistry of materials Vol.31 No.10

<P>The origin of the irreversible capacity of O3-type NaFeO2 charged to high voltage is investigated by analyzing the oxidation state of Fe and phase transition of layered NaFeO2 cathodes for sodium-ion batteries during the charging process. In-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy results revealed that charge compensation does not occur through the Fe3+/Fe4+ redox reaction during sodium extraction as no significant shift to high energy was observed in the Fe K-edge. These results were reinforced with ex-situ near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy, which suggests that oxygen redox activity is responsible for charge compensation. Formation of Fe3O4 product occurs because of oxygen release at high voltage when more than 0.5 Na is extracted from the structure; this is observed by transmission electron microscopy. NaFeO2 irreversibility is due to the formation of Fe3O4 with oxygen release, which inhibits Na insertion into the structure.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

The population of this research is all people registered as active participants of BPJAMSOSTEK in East Java Province, of which 400 people are used as samples. The data analysis method used to test the hypothesis is SEM, which was conducted by utilizing the WarpPLS 6.0 software. The study found that Agreeableness Personality significantly had a positive effect on Attitude and Perceived Behavior Control, while Social Exclusive only significantly had a positive effect on Perceived Behavior Control. Attitude and Perceived Behavior Control influence the Intention to Donate positively, then consequently had a positive effect on Donation Behavior. Religiosity tends to strengthen the influence of the Intention to Donate to Donation Behavior. To improve donation behavior in the general public, BPJAMSOSTEK must organize a form of labor protection efforts to bring prosperity to all workers in Indonesia.

      • Change in Paradigm of Civil Servant Management in Indonesia: From a Traditional toward a Strategic Approach: Opportunities and Challenges

( Ely Susanto ) 한국정책학회 2017 International Journal of Policy Studies Vol.8 No.2

The Government of Indonesia has changed the paradigm of civil servants management from a traditional approach to strategic approach which is known as strategic human resource management (SHRM). It is a good step taken by the Government of Indonesia to reform civil servant management as evidences have showed that SHRM can lead to better organizational performance. However, as the concept is well developed in the context of the private sectors and newly introduced in the public sector organizations then the adoption of SHRM by the Government of Indonesia will have many challenges. Some challenges have been identified such as SHRM requires integration of SHRM and planning, involvement of HR directors in organizational strategic plan process, the existence of clear organizational goals and strategy, the need for alignment between HRM policies and practices. Those challenges need to be responded appropriately by the Government of Indonesia in order to successfully implement SHRM in order to improve the performance of civil servants in Indonesia.

        Tantut Susanto,Iis Rahmawati,Emi Wuri Wuryaningsih,Ruka Saito,Syahrul,Rumiko Kimura,Akiko Tsuda,Noriko Tabuchi,Junko Sugama 한국역학회 2016 Epidemiology and Health Vol.38 No.-

OBJECTIVES: Complex and diverse factors are related to reproductive health (RH) behavior among adolescents according to the social and cultural context of each countries. This study examined the prevalence of active RH and factors related to active RH behavior among Indonesian adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,040 of students who were selected through a multi-stage random sampling technique. A self-administered questionnaire was developed, including the World Health Organization Illustrative Questionnaire for Interview-Surveys with Young People, pubertal development scale, and sexual activity scale, modified in accordance to the Indonesian context. The data were analyzed using descriptive and comparative statistics, as well as logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: The prevalence of active RH behavior were more higher in boys (56.6%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 50.6% to 62.6%) than in girls (43.7%; 95% CI, 37.6% to 49.8%). Negative attitudes towards RH were a factor related to active RH behavior in both boys and girls. Smoking and kind relationship envisioned before marriage (pacaran [courtship] and nikah siri [non-registered marriage]) were factors related to active RH behavior in boys; whereas the absence of access to information on substance abuse was an additional factor in girls. Moreover, an interaction was found between access to information on development and smoking (boys) and attitudes on RH (girls) as independent variables associated with active RH behavior. CONCLUSIONS: Sex education for adolescents in Indonesia, particularly in the context of a health promotion program, should be developed based on prevalent social, cultural, and religious values to prevent active RH behavior. Such programs should focus on the kind of relationship envisioned before marriage and smoking for boys and access to information on subtance abuse for girls.

Immersion in sea cucumber’s steroid extract to increase male production of juvenile freshwater crayfish

Gregorius Nugroho Susanto,Endang Linirin Widiastuti,Tri Rustanti,Sutopo Hadi 한국수산과학회 2023 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.26 No.1

One of the ways to increase the production for aquaculture is through the cultivation of monosexuals by ensuring genital reversal from which energy for reproduction is diverted towards growth. Masculinization has been identified as one of the most prominent techniques, where sex development was directed from female to male. This approach only altered the phenotype and not the genotype. The red claw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) was a relatively new commercial commodity, and the males were known to grow faster than females. Hence, it was proposed to use monocultures comprising an all-male population to increase yield using steroid hormone, synthetic 17α-methyltestosterone. However, this technique generated residues that detrimentally affect human health, the environment, and cultivated organisms. Therefore, finding new safe natural steroid sources was essential, and one of which is exploring of natural hormones extracted from the viscera of sea cucumbers (Holothuria scabra Jaeger). This study focused on the determination of male formation and testosterone levels among juvenile crayfish, after immersing in sea cucumber steroid extract (SCSE). A completely random design with factorial was used with two variables, encompassing the varied doses (0, 2, 4 mg/L, 2 mg/L 17α-methyl testosterone as control group) and immersion times of 18 and 30 h. The result showed the dose-dependent ability of SCSE increase the male genital formation and promote the testosterone level of juvenile crayfish. In addition, the testosterone was influenced by dose and immersion duration time, with the highest level of testosterone observed in treatments of 4 mg/L SCSE with 30 h immersion was 0.248 ng/mL, while the male percentage was 77%. In conclusion, the combination of dose and immersion time significantly affected growth and testosterone levels.
