Phenotypic features such as ataxia and loss of motor function, which are characteristics of Parkinson’s disease (PD), are expected to be very closely related to cerebellum function. However, few studies have reported the function of the cerebellum. Since the cerebellum, like the cerebrum, is known to undergo functional and morphological changes due to neuroinflammatory processes, elucidating key functional factors that regulate neuroinflammation in the cerebellum can be a beneficial therapeutic approach. Therefore, we employed PD patients and MPTP-induced PD mouse model to find cytokines involved in cerebellar neuroinflammation in PD and to examine changes in cell function by regulating related genes. Along with the establishment of a PD mouse model, abnormal shapes such as arrangement and number of Purkinje cells in the cerebellum were confirmed based on histological finding, consistent with those of cerebellums of PD patients. As a result of proteome profiling for neuroinflammation using PD mouse cerebellar tissues, fetuin-A, a type of cytokine, was found to be significantly reduced in Purkinje cells. To further elucidate the function of fetuin-A, neurons isolated from cerebellums of embryos (E18) were treated with fetuin-A siRNA. We uncovered that not only the population of neuronal cells, but also their morphological appearances were significantly different. In this study, we found a functional gene called fetuin-A in the PD model’s cerebellum, which was closely related to the role of cerebellar Purkinje cells of mouse and human PD. In conclusion, morphological abnormalities of Purkinje cells in PD mice and patients have a close relationship with a decrease of fetuin-A, suggesting that diagnosis and treatment of cerebellar functions of PD patients might be possible through regulation of fetuin-A. Background Micronuclei (MN), nuclear bud (NBud), and nucleoplasmic bridge (NPB) are suggested as biomarkers for radiation exposure; however, they have not been extensively studied to understand the underlying mechanisms responsible for their formation. Objectives To (1) validate NBud and NPB within the cytokinesis-blocked micronucleus (CBMN) assay as biomarkers for radiation exposure and (2) determine the effects of the DNA repair inhibitors, cytosine arabinoside (Ara C) and 3-aminobenzamide (3-AB) on radiation-induced MN, NBud, and NPB formation. Methods Human blood samples were irradiated with 0–3 Gy X-rays and subsequently treated with Ara C and 3-AB. CBMN and chromosome aberration assays were carried out to measure MN, NBud, and NPB and dicentric chromosomes, respectively. Results The frequency of radiation-induced MN, NBud, and NPB increased in a dose-dependent manner. The frequency of MN, NBud, and NPB was highly and positively correlated with the dicentric chromosome, a standard biomarker for biodosimetry (r > 0.98, p < 0.0001). Furthermore, Ara C increased the frequency of MN, NBud, and NPB, whereas 3-AB increased the frequency of MN and NPB, but not NBud. Further, the potentiating effect of Ara C on the frequency of MN, NBud, and NPB was greater than that of 3-AB. Conclusion Our results validate NBuds and NPBs as independent valuable markers of radiation exposure. Additionally, we suggest that different mechanisms are likely involved in the formation of NBuds and NPBs following X-irradiation; however, additional studies are warranted to better understand the contribution of distinct DNA repair pathways to the formation of radiation-induced damages.

In this paper, we study some properties of ruled surfaces in a three-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space related to their Gaussian curvature, the second Gaussian curvature and the mean curvature. Furthermore, we examine the ruled surfaces in a three-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space satisfying the Jacobi condition formed with those curvatures, which are called the II-W and the II-G ruled surfaces and give a classification of such ruled surfaces in a three-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space.

A great deal of exposure to words and deeper processing of the tasks are believed to facilitate learners’ vocabulary learning. However, previous studies have been confined to examining the effects of these two factors solely in learning single words. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of exposure frequency and task-induced involvement on learning L2 collocations. Thirty middle school students participated in the study to learn 16 unknown collocations through four different learning conditions: lower or higher involvement with one or four occurrences. Form and meaning recall tests were conducted immediately at the end of two learning sessions and 2-weeks later for delayed post-tests. The results showed that significant gains were obtained by the higher involvement with one and four occurrence conditions in the immediate post-tests. The effect of task-induced involvement loads seems more decisive than that of exposure frequency in regard to learning the collocations. The extended number of exposure did not have a significant impact on the retention of collocations under the same involvement load. Also, more exposure could not compensate for deeper elaboration of the given tasks. The optimal retrievals of collocations need to be established in future research considering the intensity of exposure.

The purpose of this work is to examine the English and Korean voiceless plosives from the Buckeye[15] and Seoul[16] corpus in terms of their static spectral characteristics. The plosives were automatically extracted by a Praat script. In order to estimate the percent correctness in the classification of the plosives, discriminant analyses were performed whose trainings were based on four spectral moments, i.e. the center of gravity, variance, skewness and kurtosis as suggested in [6]. Another set of discriminant analyses were performed based on the spectral tilts. In the last set of analyeses, the spectral moments and tilts were both used in the training. Results showed that the correct classification rate did not exceed around 65% in the best case, which suggested that phonetic cues other than the release burst would be necessary including the dynamic spectral aspects and vowel-onset cues.
