원어민 억양이 복제된 학습자 발화를 통한 영어운율 교육

윤규철 ( Kyu Chul Yoon ),허안나 ( An Na Heo ),안상철 ( Sang Cheol Ahn ) 한국현대영어영문학회 2010 현대영어영문학 Vol.54 No.1

The purpose of this paper is to examine the viability of employing the intonation cloning technique in teaching English prosody. Ten native speakers of Korean participated in the prosody self-study experiment. All of them were similar in their level of English proficiency. They were grouped into two groups: the target group and the control group. For the study material of the target group, the English native speaker`s F0 contours were transferred to matching utterances of the target group. No manipulation was done to the study material for the control group. The recordings both before and after the experiment showed that the target group performed better than the control group. Specifically, the target group displayed patterns similar to those of the English native speaker in terms of the location of the highest F0 points and the range of F0 values between the lowest and the highest points in the utterances. The recording after the experiment was also subjectively evaluated by a native speaker of English. As expected, the target group scored higher than the control group. All these results suggest that it is viable to teach English intonation by using learner`s utterances with cloned native intonation. (Yeungnam University, Kyung Hee University)

        영어발음 자동평가 모델

        윤규철(Kyuchul Yoon) 한국중원언어학회 2011 언어학연구 Vol.0 No.19

The purpose of this paper is to build an automatic evaluation model of English pronunciation. The technique proposed in Yoon (2009) is extended to include the evaluation of segmental proficiency in the form of spectral comparison. A target English sentence is uttered by a group of “good” Korean speakers learning English, another group of “bad” speakers and the third group of model native speakers of English. Each of the utterances of the good and bad groups is compared against all of the utterances of the model group in terms of four factors; spectrum, F0, intensity and duration. Comparison of the spectral envelops, F0 contours, intensity contours and segmental durations between the two matching utterances yielded 4-dimensional coordinates, which were then plotted in a 4-dimensional model space. This creates an automatic evaluation model of English pronunciation proficiency in the form of a discriminant function. The leave-one-out crossvalidation created 24 models the predictive power of which was then tested with the use of discriminant analyses. The tests reveal that the prediction rate was 67% for the good group and 80% for the bad group.

영어 발음 평가 모델을 활용한 수동 평가자 연구

        윤규철(Yoon, Kyuchul) 한국음성학회 2013 말소리와 음성과학 Vol.5 No.4

The purpose of this paper is to show the tendency of evaluators in the pronunciation evaluation of English utterances. The tendency was visualized using the evaluation model of English pronunciation proposed in [1]. One hundred fifty female university students and four evaluators participated in the study. Students read eight English sentences aloud as evaluators evaluated English pronunciation by their own criteria. The models based on their pronunciation evaluation proved to be efficient in showing their evaluation tendency in terms of the fundamental frequency, intensity, segmental durations, and segmental spectra as compared to those of the five native speakers of English chosen for building the models. However, human evaluators were not always consistent in their evaluation and sometimes gave conflicting scores to the same students.

벅아이 코퍼스에서의 젊은 성인 여성의 모음 포먼트 분석

        윤규철(Yoon, Kyuchul) 한국음성학회 2012 말소리와 음성과학 Vol.4 No.4

The purpose of this paper is to measure the first two vowel formants of the ten young female speakers from the Buckeye Corpus of Conversational Speech [1] automatically and then to analyze various potential factors that may affect the formant distribution of the eight peripheral vowels of English. The factors that were analyzed included the place of articulation, the content versus function word information, the syllabic stress information, the location in a word, the location in an utterance, the speech rate of the three consecutive words, and the word frequency in the corpus. The results indicate that the overall formant patterns of the female speakers were similar to those of earlier works. The effects of the factors on the realization of the two formants were also similar to those from the male speakers with minor differences.

자연발화 음성코퍼스를 이용한 영어와 한국어 음배열 비교 연구

윤규철 ( Yoon Kyuchul ) 연세대학교 언어정보연구원 2023 언어사실과 관점 Vol.59 No.-

The purpose of this work was to compare the distributional properties of the segments in the utterances of the English and Korean spontaneous speech corpus in terms of the language identification. In order to compare the two languages, segments of the utterances were extracted with respect to the two successive neighboring vowels; the onset vowel segment sequences, the inter-vowel segment sequences and the offset vowel segment sequences. From the analysis of the 409,821 sequences from the Buckeye corpus and the 604,080 sequences from the Seoul corpus, it was shown that in addition to the inherent differences of the syllable structure of the two languages, their distributional properties of the consonants and vowels were different in terms of the type and proportion of the segments involved.

        프랏을 이용한 영시 운율 교육

윤규철 ( Kyu Chul Yoon ),오지연 ( Ji Yeon Oh ),안상철 ( Sang Cheol Ahn ) 한국영어영문학회 2010 영어 영문학 Vol.56 No.4

The purpose of this work is to examine the viability of employing the prosody cloning technique in teaching English prosody. Ten native speakers of Korean high school students with similar level of English proficiency participated in the poem self-study experiment. Five of them were grouped into the experimental group and the remaining five into the control group. One popular English poem from a high school textbook was selected and its recording by a professional native speaker of English was used in the experiment. The members of the two groups made a recording of the poem both before and after the experiment. For the study material, the experimental group used their own recorded utterances with their prosody cloned from the professional English speaker, while the control group used the utterances of the professional speaker alone. The acoustic analysis of the recordings by the prosodic foot both before and after the experiment showed that the experimental group performed slightly better than the control group in the realization of the intensity contour of the poem. There were no significant differences in the realization of the intonation contour and segmental durations between the two groups. The recording after the experiment was also subjectively evaluated by a native speaker of English and the scores for the experimental group were slightly higher than the control group. These findings suggest that the use of English poems with the help of the prosody cloning technique is a potentially viable approach to teaching English intonation to high school students. A long-term study with more students is necessary.

운율 복제 기법을 이용한 영어 운율 교육

        윤규철 ( Yoon Kyuchul ) 대한영어영문학회 2011 영어영문학연구 Vol.37 No.1

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the possibility of using the prosody cloning technique in teaching English prosody to university students. Eighty-six university students, twenty two in a control group and the other sixty four in the experimental group, participated in a prosody training experiment for a five and a half week period. For the study material of the experimental group, eight utterances whose prosody had been cloned after that of a native speaker of English were given while the control group was given the same set uttered by the same native speaker. The recordings both before and after the experiment were made. The results showed that the experimental group performed better in terms of the intonation contour and word durations. In the two listening tests, the scores of the experimental group were better than the control group. These findings appear to suggest that the use of prosody cloning technique is viable in teaching English prosody to university students. (Yeungnam University)
